Gerrit Cole wasnât as dominant as he has been throughout the first part of the season. He didnât need to be.
Cole struck out eight in 5 2/3 strong innings DeVante Parker Jersey , and the Houston Astros hit three home runs in a 9-1 win over the Detroit Tigers on Saturday.
Cole (10-2) allowed one run and three hits with four walks after being activated from the bereavement list prior to the game.
âIt was tough to keep the emotions in check at times trying to control things that are out of my control,â Cole said. âIâm thankful that we put up a bunch of runs, gave us some cushion, and all in all, played a good game.â
He threw six shutout innings in his last start Monday against Oakland.
âHe was pretty emotional today just getting back into things and getting through the game,â Houston manager A.J. Hinch said. âBeing away from this club for a couple days and then jumping right back into the competition is probably a little hard. I think you could expect looseness around the strike zone when he wasnât making his pitches. He expects to be perfect; still pretty good.â
Josh Reddick and Evan Gattis hit back-to-back solo homers in the fifth to chase Detroit starter Michael Fulmer (3-9). Tyler White added a two-run shot to left in the seventh.
âI donât think we let him get ahead too often,â Reddick said. âWe seemed to jump on his fastball when he threw strikes and it really paid off for us.â
Houston got to Fulmer early with five runs in the first three innings.
The Astros took a 2-0 lead in the first on Yuli Gurrielâs sacrifice fly and Reddickâs run-scoring bloop double to shallow center. George Springer had an RBI double and Alex Bregman a run-scoring single in the second to push the lead to 4-0. Marwin Gonzalezâs RBI single in the third made it 5-0.
âThey didnât kill our guy at all,â Detroit manager Ron Gardenhire said. âThey blooped some in and got some hits. Thatâs a good team over there. They put balls in play. They jump first pitch if you make a mistake. They got a lead and they did what theyâre supposed to do with it.â
James McCann had an RBI double in the sixth, snapping a 19-inning scoreless streak for the Tigers. Detroit hadnât scored since the fourth inning of Wednesdayâs game against the Rays. The Tigers have lost six straight.
Fulmer gave up seven runs and a season-high 10 hits in 4 2/3 innings.
Fulmer said he felt like he had some of his better stuff this season. Fulmer was frustrated with Pat Hobergâs strike zone throughout the game and voiced his displeasure with it after the game.
âThe guy was God awful Archie Manning Jersey ,â Fulmer said of Hoberg. âIt was a bad day for him and for me. ⦠You canât give a team like the Astros extra strikes. Itâs just what it boils down to. I made my fair share of mistakes, but thereâs 10 calls about pitches inside the zone that he called balls. I let him know he missed 10.â
Fulmer lost his fourth straight decision and has allowed at least three runs in each of his last five outings.
GETTING THEIR RINGS
Detroit RHP Mike Fiers and LHP Francisco Liriano received their World Series championship rings before Saturdayâs game. Fiers pitched for the Astros from 2015-2017, while Liriano was acquired by the Astros at the trade deadline last season and appeared in five postseason games.
ASTROS ROSTER MOVE
With Cole coming off the bereavement list, the Astros optioned OF Jake Marisnick to Triple A Fresno.
HE SAID IT
âMy thing is, umpires, I donât know if they donât take pride in it or what, but they donât get held accountable for the bad calls, the missed calls. For him to admit he missed 10 pitches for me alone, Iâm sure it was bad for the other side as well.â â Fulmer on the umpiring.
TRAINERâS ROOM
Astros: SS Carlos Correa (back stiffness) does not have a definitive timetable for when he will begin a rehab assignment Kyle Van Noy Jersey , Hinch said. Correa has been on the disabled list since June 29.
UP NEXT
Tigers: Liriano (3-5, 4.74 ERA) will make his 15th start Sunday in the series finale looking to rebound after allowing seven runs on eight hits in 2 1/3 innings against the Rays on Monday.
Astros: RHP Justin Verlander (9-4, 2.05) will make his 21st start of the season and the first of his career against his former team. Verlander threw six scoreless innings but did not factor into the decision Monday against the Athletics.

NEW YORK â The Tampa Bay Rays have become one of baseballâs most pleasant surprises since implementing an unusual wrinkle into their starting rotation. But possessing a true old-fashioned ace atop their rotation hasnât stopped the New York Mets from enduring one of the worst runs in their history.
Two teams heading in unexpectedly different directions will begin a rare three-game series Friday night when the Mets host the Rays at Citi Field.
It will be just the second time the Rays play the Mets at Citi Field since the stadium opened in 2009, though Tampa Bay played three âhome gamesâ against the New York Yankees at Citi Field last September after Hurricane Irma hit the gulf coast of Florida.
Right-hander Ryne Stanek (1-2, 1.98 ERA) is scheduled to serve as the âopenerâ for the Rays against Mets ace Jacob deGrom (5-4, 1.84).
Both teams were off Thursday after completing brief two-game interleague series on Wednesday when the Rays fell to the host Miami Marlins 3-0 and the visiting Mets beat the Toronto Blue Jays 6-3.
Despite falling to .500 with the loss, the Rays (43-43) received what has become a standard strong pitching effort. Tampa Bay has the lowest ERA in the majors (2.81) since May 19 when it began utilizing an âopenerâ instead of a traditional starting pitcher in select games.
The Rays have allowed three runs or fewer 25 times in the subsequent 43 games, 23 of which have been started by relief pitchers typically pitching three innings or fewer.
Stanek will make his 10th start, by far the most among openers. He has a 1.42 ERA as a starter and has pitched longer than 1 2/3 innings just once.
Stanek has also contributed as a late-inning reliever in the last six weeks Kyle Juszczyk Jersey , which means heâll take the mound Friday fresh off three decidedly different experiences.
After tossing a scoreless inning as a starter against the Houston Astros last Saturday, Stanek took the loss Monday when he allowed a run without getting an out as the Rays fell to the Marlins 3-2 in the 10th inning before he tossed two hitless innings in Tuesdayâs 9-6, 16-inning win.
âRyneâs thrown the ball so well for us in that opener role,â Rays manager Kevin Cash told reporters after the loss Monday. âHeâs done some good things in the later innings.â
Nobody in baseball is doing a better job of things during traditional starterâs innings than deGrom, who leads the majors in ERA despite suffering from almost inconceivable bad luck. DeGrom has a 1.42 ERA in his last 13 starts, during which the Mets have gone 3-10 and deGrom is 3-4.
DeGromâs misery is par for the course for the Mets (34-49), who have gone 7-22 since June 1 and are just 23-48 since an 11-1 start.
âIâm tired of losing to be honest â everybody else in here Iâm sure is,â deGrom told reporters Saturday when he took the loss after allowing three runs in six innings as the Mets fell to the Marlins 5-2. âThatâs not what we want to do. We came in here to win baseball games and weâre not doing that. We have to find a way to do that.â
With the Mets buried in the postseason race, deGrom has been the subject of trade rumors DeShone Kizer Jersey , though SNY reported Thursday that it appears he will stay with the team through at least the end of the season.
New York, which has a three-headed general manager setup after Sandy Alderson went on an indefinite leave of absence last week in order to battle a recurrence of cancer, is expected to hire a new general manager in the offseason.
Stanek has never faced the Mets. DeGrom didnât factor into the decision in his only previous career start against the Rays on Aug. 7, 2015, when he gave up two runs in 6 1/3 innings in New Yorkâs 4-3 victory.
