COLUMBUS Adidas Matt Duchene Jersey , Ohio â The Columbus Blue Jackets find themselves moving deep into uncharted waters.
Theyâve never led a Stanley Cup playoff series let alone taken a 2-0 lead. After winning both games on the road against the Washington Capitals in overtime, the Blue Jackets return home for Game 3 in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference series on Tuesday night at whatâs expected to be a lively and loud Nationwide Arena.
âI just think we found our confidence at the right time and feel good about ourselves,â Blue Jackets coach John Tortorella said after the 5-4 victory in Game 2 on Sunday night. âItâs a bridge that we have crossed and I hope we stay on the right side. We go out there knowing weâre going to win. Itâs a bit of a swagger they have.â
The excitement is palpable in Columbus in anticipation of Game 3 after forward Matt Calvert scored the winner from the doorstep with one hand on his stick in Washington. But thereâs plenty of work to do to win a playoff series for the first time in team history.
âWeâre going to keep getting better,â Calvert said. âWeâre going to keep learning every day. Weâll be ready for Game 3.â
More than any other player, goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky is responsible for the Blue Jacketsâ two victories. He was peppered with 58 shots by the Capitals in Game 2 but came up with big saves time and again when Columbus was backed up in the defensive zone for long stretches.
âI would say your career is a journey and you learn some things here and there,â Bobrovsky said. âIt doesnât matter whatâs in the past. Weâre going to play (Game 3). It doesnât matter what happened (in Game 2). Each moment is huge right now and you just have to be ready.â
The Blue Jackets are just the fifth team to overcome multi-goal deficits in back-to-back playoff games in NHL history, but thatâs also a concern. Theyâve fallen behind in both games largely because of too many penalties â 13 combined in Games 1 and 2.
The Capitals have scored on five of 13 power-play opportunities so far.
âI think we have a way of (staying out of the penalty box),â Tortorella said. âWe just need to be more consistent doing it. We canât be (taking penalties) all that time. Itâs just impossible. Theyâre too good. That has to be straightened out moving forward.â
The Capitals still have plenty of skill with Alexander Ovechkin leading the way, and they definitely have more postseason experience than the Blue Jackets.
Washington was in the same boat last year when it dropped the first two games of its second-round series against the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Capitals rallied to force Game 7 before falling.
In 2009, the Capitals were trailing 0-2 against the New York Rangers before coming back to advance. But theyâre also just the sixth team in league history to lose two at home in overtime to start a seven-game series, and all five ended up being eliminated.
So while thereâs a sense of urgency for the Metropolitan Division champions given their past playoff failures Bengals Game Jerseys , itâs not yet desperation.
âRight now weâre sitting here two in a hole,â Capitals coach Barry Trotz said. âBut at the same time, your group has an opportunity to grow, fight their way back.
âThereâs a lot of character in our room. Our group has a lot of fight in it. Weâre not going away. Weâre going to be around. Youâre going to see us dig in. Youâre going to see us fight. Weâre going to see something happen here. Iâm excited to get to Columbus and for Game 3.â
The Capitals have outplayed the Blue Jackets for long stretches, but theyâve let leads slip away and the final result hasnât gone their way.
âWeâve got to win, and thatâs what we come for,â Capitals defenseman John Carlson said after contributing six assists in the first two games. âWe donât come to outplay them, we donât come to outshoot them. You have to win, and we didnât do it.â
Trotz has yet to indicate whether Philipp Grubauer or Braden Holtby will start in goal on Tuesday night. Holtby replaced Grubauer in Game 2.
âI think weâve got to manage to not only get the lead but hold onto it,â Grubauer said. âItâs not easy. Itâs a tough team to play against. But we made it really hard on ourselves, too.â
One Capitals player who definitely wonât see action in Games 3 or 4 is winger Andre Burakovsky Chargers Elite Jerseys , who suffered an upper-body injury in the first period on Sunday and did not make the trip.
Someone is going to gamble on Michael Porter Jr.
He insists itâll pay off.
There is an element of danger involved with every NBA draft pick, in that nothing is guaranteed. There isnât a player that epitomizes the risk versus reward thinking in this draft more than Porter Jr., who could get taken as high as No. 2 by Sacramento or go several picks lower because of uncertainty surrounding his health.
Back problems that necessitated surgery limited his lone college season to three games at Missouri, and a scheduled Friday workout was called off because of hip spasms. Thereâs still a chance he will do a workout before draft night and teams have gotten access to new medical information that would seem to suggest heâs ready for the NBA â but still, skepticism may be understandable.
âIâm feeling great,â Porter Jr. said.
Find out Thursday night which team believes him the most.
Heâs 6-foot-10 and is usually categorized as a power forward, though in an NBA thatâs now largely positionless Porter Jr. could wear a lot of hats. Heâs already shown a complete skillset â passing, dribbling, shooting â that would translate to playing basically anywhere except center. He weighed 211 pounds last month at the Draft Combine, meaning thereâs still plenty of room on his frame to add strength.
His college highlights are basically nonexistent: Porter Jr. scored 30 points in 53 minutes of action with the Tigers. Porter Jr.âs reputation is largely built on what he did as a high schooler when he was considered the best prospect in the country, and there was a workout earlier this month arranged by agent Mark Bartelstein earlier this month where he got rave reviews.
âHe showed that heâs alive and well and moving Saquon Barkley Giants Jersey ,â said Memphis general manager Chris Wallace, whose team has the No. 4 pick â and has been linked to Porter Jr. by many prognosticators. âI would say (he) passed that first test.â
Alive, well and moving would seem to be the absolute basic prerequisites for a team to be satisfied about when preparing to use a lottery pick on someone, but Porter Jr. vows that whichever team grabs him wonât be disappointed.
âI just feel like in todayâs game, thereâs guys that can do anything on the floor,â Porter Jr. said. âAnd thatâs how I kind of view myself.â
Porter Jr. played two minutes in his college debut in November, then underwent back surgery â a microdiscectomy of the L3 and L4 spinal discs â about a week and a half later. He returned for an SEC Tournament game against Georgia, then put up 16 points and 10 rebounds in Missouriâs loss to Florida State in the NCAA Tournament.
The injury went back to Porter Jr.âs sophomore year of high school, when he got hurt while getting hit on a dunk attempt.
âHeâs a very versatile player,â former Georgia coach Mark Fox said. âAnd Iâm thankful that the kidâs gotten healthy because he was a terrific talent. ⦠Heâll be a top-five selection. I remember watching him in high school, and heâs as complete of a player as there was at that level.â
Thatâs what Porter Jr. wants NBA teams to remember before making their selection.
He believes heâs the best player. But with every indication that Deandre Ayton will go No. 1 to Phoenix Cheap Clive Walford Jersey , the intrigue starts at No. 2 and Porter is surely getting a real long look from the franchises that have the other top-10 spots, those being in order Sacramento, Atlanta, Memphis, Dallas, Orlando, Chicago, Cleveland, New York and Philadelphia.
âItâs about getting in the right situation,â Porter Jr. said. âI donât need to go No. 1. I donât feel like I have an ego that makes me want to go No. 1. I just want the right situation for me.â
