A little rest did Kris Bryant a lot of good.
Bryant ended a 24-game homerless drought J.T. Miller Jersey , the longest of his career, and Ian Happ and Kyle Schwarber also went deep as the Chicago Cubs routed the St. Louis Cardinals 13-5 on Friday night.
âI know that thereâs probably going to be plenty more times in my career when that happens and itâs all part of the journey,â Bryant said about his power outage. âAs much as we hate it as players, everybody goes through it at some point in their careers. Itâs nothing new to me, so on the surface everything has been peachy and pretty easy for me, but it never felt easy.â
Bryant drilled a 448-foot, two-run shot to left field off an ineffective Michael Wacha in the third inning for his first home run since May 14. The 2016 NL MVP capped a six-run fifth with an RBI single and drove in another run with a sacrifice fly in the seventh. His four RBIs were a season high.
Bryant had been hitless in his four previous games. Cubs manager Joe Maddon sat the All-Star slugger on Wednesday and Thursday.
âIt looked like the ball was coming (off his bat) hotter,â Maddon said. âI thought KB looked good. He looked good. I loved the base hit, I loved the sacrifice fly.â
Jon Lester ran his scoreless streak to 17 innings before giving up a solo home run to Marcell Ozuna in the fourth as the Cubs won for the first time in four tries at Busch Stadium this season. Lester (8-2) allowed two runs in six innings to earn his fourth straight win.
âThat might be the best stuff heâs had all year from my angle,â Maddon said. âThat velocity was there. He just continues to trend in the right direction.â
Lester helped himself at the plate, too, driving in a run on a bunt in the fourth and reaching on catcher Yadier Molinaâs throwing error that led to a second run as the Cubs extended their lead to 5-0.
Anthony Rizzo had three hits Sean Monahan Jersey , was hit by a pitch and scored a run. Schwarber launched a three-run homer that traveled a projected 465 feet to straightaway center in the fifth, the third-longest homer by an opposing player in Busch Stadium III history.
Happ led off the third with a home run to right field. His first homer since May 22 snapped a 20-inning scoreless streak for the Cubs.
âWe hit homers but we also did the little things well, too,â Maddon said. âWe ran the bases well.â
Wacha (8-2) allowed a career-high nine runs, eight earned, in a season-low four-plus innings. The three home runs he gave up tied a career high.
âI was just falling behind in the counts,â Wacha said. âA lot of 1-0, 2-0s and just too many mistakes and they didnât miss too many of them.â
Matt Carpenter homered in the sixth and drove in two runs, but the Cardinals lost their third consecutive game.
âBottom line, we lost and it wasnât pretty,â manager Mike Matheny said. âAnd itâs a matter of trying to conserve arms, trying to get a couple guys off their feet and figure out a way to have some individual things that are done well and build on and have some confidence that will put us in a better spot tomorrow.â
TRAINERâS ROOM
Cubs: RHP Yu Darvish (right triceps tendinitis) threw a 35-pitch bullpen. He is scheduled to throw another one when the team returns home next week.
Cardinals: 1B Luke Voit was recalled from Double-A Springfield and RHP Matt Bowman (right hand finger blisters) was activated from the 10-day disabled list. 1B Jose Martinez was placed on the paternity list and RHP Daniel Poncedeleon was optioned to Triple-A Memphis.

Cubs RHP Kyle Hendricks (4-6 http://www.officialoilers.com/authentic-adidas-con...vid-jer sey , 3.48 ERA) starts Saturday night against RHP Carlos Martinez (3-2, 2.96). Hendricks has dropped three straight decisions for the first time in his career. Martinez has walked 12 over 7 2/3 innings in two starts since returning from a lat strain.

Matt Harvey is starting to discover his old winning form in his new home with the Cincinnati Reds.
Harvey pitched six-hit ball into the seventh inning, earning back-to-back wins for the first time this season and leading Cincinnati to a 5-3 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday night.
âA start like today where youâre facing a good lineup, and you donât have your best stuff, and you grind through it, itâs a step in the right direction,â Harvey said.
Jesse Winker had three hits and two RBIs for last-place Cincinnati, which has won eight of nine. Scooter Gennett had two hits, including a run-scoring single in the ninth, and scored three times.
Harvey (3-5) allowed one run in 6 2/3 innings in his longest start since lasting seven innings with the New York Mets on April 21, 2017, against Washington.
âI was cruising Jake Allen Jersey ,â Harvey said.
Harvey pitched out of trouble in the fourth when he allowed Tyler Flowersâ run-scoring double before stranding two baserunners.
âThe more he goes out there, the more comfortable I think he gets,â Gennett said. âHeâs able to command his pitches better and better ⦠you can see that confidence going up. Iâm just really happy heâs got an opportunity over here to get back to his normal self and it looks like heâs doing that.â
It was Harveyâs ninth start with the Reds after he was acquired in a trade with the Mets on May 8. He allowed two runs in a 6-2 win over the Cubs on Thursday.
Braves manager Brian Snitker said âeverything was crispâ in Harveyâs pitch selection.
âHis breaking ball was really good tonight,â Snitker said. âHis fastball, his whole game, the whole thing was a lot better than the last time I saw him.â
The last time Harvey won consecutive starts was May 23 and May 28, 2017, for the Mets against the Padres and Pirates.
The Reds led 4-1 before Atlanta scored two runs in the eighth. Ender Inciarte reached on a single that bounced off Amir Garrettâs left leg, knocking him to the ground and out of the game. Ozzie Albies doubled before Freddie Freeman and Nick Markakis produced run-scoring groundouts.
Raisel Iglesias recorded the final out in the eighth on Johan Camargoâs fly ball to right field with runners on first and second, and then pitched the ninth for his 14th save.
Anibal Sanchez (3-2) left with two outs in the fifth inning due to cramping in his right calf, but he is expected to make his next start. He allowed two runs and five hits in 4 2/3 innings.
TRAINERâS ROOM
Reds: X-rays on Garrettâs left leg were negative. Garrett tried to chase the deflection before falling to the ground in pain. âAt the time when it hit me, it hurt me pretty bad Dan Hamhuis Jersey Kids , Iâm not going to lie,â Garrett said, adding âmy leg gave out.â He said he hopes to return âin a day or two.â
Braves: RHP Arodys Vizcaino (right shoulder inflammation) has felt good playing catch and is expected to throw on the mound when the team begins a weekend series in St. Louis on Friday. If all goes well, Vizcaino could come off the 10-day DL on Sunday.
SHORT VISIT
Right-hander Lucas Sims was sent back to Triple-A Gwinnett only three days after his promotion. Matt Wisler was recalled from Gwinnett and allowed one run in 2 1/3 innings after replacing Sanchez in the fifth.
NEW ROLE
Reds left-hander Brandon Finnegan is being moved to a relief role at Triple-A Louisville. âWeâve just got to get him in a role where he can experience some success again,â president of baseball operations Dick Williams said.
TRAEâS PITCHING FORM
Atlanta Hawks first-round draft pick Trae Young threw out the first pitch . Young is best known for his 3-point shooting on the court, and he lofted a slow pitch that was caught in the left-handed batterâs box.

Reds: RHP Luis Castillo (5-8, 5.70 ERA) will start in Wednesdayâs finale of the three-game series. He allowed two runs in four innings in his only preview start against the Braves, an 8-1 loss on Aug. 20, 2017.
Braves: LHP Sean Newcomb (8-2, 2.59 ERA) is 1-0 with a 3.27 ERA in two career starts against the Reds.
