Though Eric Wood can finally say heâs retired Shaq Lawson Jersey , the now-former Buffalo Bills center is unaccustomed to discussing his career in the past tense.
On Monday, for example, Wood was still referring to this spring as âthe offseason,â while attending Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kellyâs charitable foundation golf tournament outside of Buffalo.
âItâs so funny. I find myself referring to it as the offseason and weâre making travel plans that arenât slotted for just the five weeks off in the summer,â Wood said, referring to the break players traditionally get between the final spring practice and the start of training camp.
âItâs different for sure,â he added, while discussing his retirement for the first time since being diagnosed with a career-ending neck injury in January.
âI feel great,â Wood said, noting heâs already dropped about 55 pounds from his 310-pound playing weight.
âThe body feels good. Canât play ball Bradley Roby Jersey , which stinks. And I miss it,â he added. âThereâs been a lot of times this spring where Iâve seen pictures posted and you think, `Well, thatâs my team.â
âBut, itâs all good.â
Wood never envisioned his playing days would end so abruptly nine seasons into his NFL career, and after signing a two-year contract extension last summer.
Instead, team doctors ruled he would never be allowed to play again after end-of-season tests revealed Wood had two disks being dangerously close to his spinal cord. Wood received the news while he was in the delivery room with his wife, and about an hour before the birth of his second child, a son.
âIt was shocking,â he said Johnthan Banks Jersey , noting his first reaction was to seek a second opinion. âBut ultimately there was no scenario for return to play.â
Wood revealed the severity of the injury during a news conference in January. He was not, however, allowed to say he was officially retiring due to contractual issues that could have prevented Wood from retaining his bonus money until the Bills finally released the 32-year-old on Thursday.
He hasnât yet laid out any future plans, though Wood will always be a Bills fan after being selected by Buffalo in the first round of the 2009 draft out of Louisville.
Wood is following the team online and in social media. He laughed over the uproar on Twitter amid reports rookie first-round draft pick Josh Allen threw an interception during practice last week.
A respected team leader, one thing Wood will miss is mentoring younger players.
He also expressed concern regarding good friend and former teammate Richie Incognito, who has had a tumultuous offseason. Incognito abruptly retired by posting a note on Twitter before the Bills granted his request to be released to potentially sign with another team weeks later.
Then, Incognito spent three days in a Florida mental hospital after he allegedly threw weights and tennis balls at gym employees and another patron and told police officers the government was spying on him two weeks ago.
âHeâs going through a tough time right now,â Wood said. âWeâre praying for him, and I know heâll come out of this a good man.â
On the bright side, Wood has come to terms with how his career ended and the consolation that it happened after a season in which the Bills snapped a 17-year playoff drought. His final game was a 10-3 loss to Jacksonville in an AFC wild-card playoff on Jan. 7.
âYeah Sean Lee Jersey , that playoff berth was very sweet,â Wood said. âIt wouldâve been very tough my career ending and not ever making the playoffs up here.â

Seattle Seahawks free safety Earl Thomas officially commenced his holdout as the team began its three-day mandatory minicamp Tuesday.
Thomas released a statement on Twitter on Sunday announcing his intention to skip the minicamp and all team-related activities until his contract situation is resolved.
"Kind of had heard that he was making that choice," head coach Pete Carroll said. "I wish he was here. That would be nice. But we're focusing on the guys that are here and we'll see how that goes."
Thomas is entering the final year of a four-year extension signed prior to the 2014 season. He is scheduled to make $8.5 million in base salary in 2018.
"I want to remain a Seahawk for the rest of my career but I also believe that based on my production over the last 8 years that I've earned the right to have this taken care of as soon as possible," Thomas wrote. "I want to have certainty in regards to the upcoming years of my career."
The Seahawks can fine Thomas $84,435 if he misses all three days of the minicamp. Fines are ultimately at the team's discretion.
Defensive end Chris Clemons was the last Seahawks player to skip the mandatory minicamp in 2012, but he signed a new contract prior to training camp and was in attendance there. Running back Marshawn Lynch in 2014 and safety Kam Chancellor in 2015 did hold out from training camp with Chancellor missing the first two weeks of the regular season.
Carroll said each situation is different when it comes to holdouts.
"It's an individual case with whoever the guy it, whatever his story is," Carroll said. "I don't see putting them in a basket. I think you look at each guy and whatever is going on, the history and all that and you deal with it accordingly."
Thomas, defensive end Frank Clark and cornerback Byron Maxwell had all stayed away from the team during voluntary workouts. Clark and Maxwell were both in attendance Tuesday Carl Nassib Jersey , though Clark was limited due to a sore hamstring.
If Thomas' holdout extends into training camp, he can be fined $40,000 a day for each day he misses. Additional penalties are incurred if he misses more than six days of camp. Carroll said he is uncertain how the situation will play out but that he still views Thomas as a part of their program.
"Heck yeah, he's under contract. Sure," Carroll said. "... He gives you everything he's got when he's with you."
Notes: CB Dontae Johnson had surgery to repair a broken bone in his foot. He is currently in a walking boot and recovering.
