ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Josh Willingham kept his hot stretch going with a hit at the perfect time. Willingham extended his season-opening hitting streak to 14 games with a go-ahead three-run double and the Minnesota Twins beat the Tampa Bay Rays 5-4 on Friday night. "Another big night for our left fielder, whats his name? ... Willingham," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said with a smile. "I seem to be calling that name out an awful lot. Hes fun to watch. Hes been on the baseball, thats for sure." Willinghams hit in the seventh off Joel Peralta puts him one away from tying Kirby Pucketts team mark of hitting safely in 15 straight games to start the 1994 season. "I was just battling," Willingham said. "That was a 1-2 count. I was looking for anything. I was trying to see the ball out of his hand. Just reacted to the fastball." The Twins also got two RBIs from Joe Mauer, who went 2 for 3 with two walks. Mauer is 31 for 70 overall at Tropicana Field. "For whatever reason I see the ball pretty good here," Mauer said. "So hopefully I can continue that the next couple days." Evan Longoria and Matt Joyce homered for the Rays. Longoria had a homer and four RBIs in Tampa Bays 9-4 win Thursday night at Toronto. "They just beat us," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "They got the hit that they needed, we did not and they won. So we just have to move on." After Tampa Bay tied it with a run on Carlos Penas bases-loaded double-play grounder in the sixth, Longoria gave Tampa Bay a 4-2 lead with a two-run shot off Liam Hendriks. "Thats the way that guy is," Gardenhire said of Longoria. "You make a mistake and he kills it, and he did." Mauer had put the Twins ahead 2-0 on RBI singles in the first and fifth. "Were never out of it until the 27th out is recorded," Mauer said. "Its a big difference between this year and last year. Guys keep fighting, keep swinging the bats and thats what you got to do." Joyce cut the Rays deficit to 2-1 during the fifth on his fourth homer of the season. Hendriks gave up four runs and five hits in 5 2-3 innings. Tampa Bays Matt Moore allowed three runs and eight hits over 6 1-3 innings. Brandon Gomes (0-1) replaced Moore and was charged for two runs, one hit and a walk without recording an out. Twins reliever Matt Maloney (1-0) retired all three batters he faced. Matt Capps pitched the ninth for his fourth save. Tampa Bay centre fielder B.J. Upton was reinstated from the 15-day disabled list and utility man Stephen Vogt was optioned to Triple-A Durham before the game. Upton hurt his lower back in an outfield collision with teammate Desmond Jennings during a spring training game against Miami on March 14. He grounded out with a runner on third and two outs in the second, and finished 0 for 3. NOTES: Minnesota 1B-DH Justin Morneau, who fouled a ball off his right foot Thursday night, was out of the lineup, but available off the bench. "Everything is fine," Gardenhire said. "Its pretty sore. I didnt see any reason to put him out there on this (artificial) surface. Its pretty hard. I expect him to be back out there (Saturday). ... Tampa Bay RHP James Shields (2-0) and Twins RHP Carl Pavano (1-1) are Saturday nights scheduled starters. ... After the game, Tampa Bay optioned INF Reid Brignac to Durham to make room for 1B-OF Brandon Allen, who was claimed off waivers Thursday from Oakland. DeAngelo Williams Elite Jersey . The Jets jumped into a quick 2-0 lead in the first on goals by Zach Bogosian (3rd) and Devin Setoguchi (9th) 1:05 apart. Toby Enstrom and Andrew Ladd drew assists on the Bogosian goal, a point shot that seemed to dip and get by former Moose goaltender Eddie Lack. PHILADELPHIA -- Grim faced, hands on his hips, Craig Berube looked like the angriest man in Philadelphia. The coach the Flyers call "Chief" could afford to smile. He won his debut -- and helped the Flyers avoid their first 0-4 start in franchise history. Brayden Schenn and Braydon Coburn scored goals, and Steve Mason had 33 saves to make Berube a winner, leading the Flyers past the Florida Panthers 2-1 on Tuesday night. Berube was on the bench a day after Peter Laviolette was fired after a 0-3 start. Laviolette dealt with rumours of his firing last season, a year in which the Flyers missed the playoffs after the lockout-shortened season. Dont pop the bubbly for win No. 1. "Its over," Berube said. "Were worried about tomorrow and practice." With Berube calling the shots, the Flyers scored their season high for goals. So, theres still work ahead. "We have to get better, we have to have more of an attack," Berube said. "I know we do have good offensive players here. Its just a matter of getting them confident." Mason stopped all 12 shots in the first period and the first 12 of the second until Brad Boyes scored his first of the season with 6 seconds left. Mason, who improved to 5-0 against Florida, came up big when he stopped Shawn Matthias on a short-handed breakaway early in the second. "He just had an answer for all of our shots," Matthias said. "We have to get giddier and work on it." Mason and Ray Emery worked as a tandem in net. Berube gave no indication if he would stick with Mason or use both. "Thats up to Chief to decide who goes in," Mason said. "You guys want to make this huge deal out of it. But Razor and I, our job is just every day, not matter whos in net, is to be the better goalie of the two playing that night. Were not going to dwell on whos starting." Berube arrived steeped in the orange-and-black tradition, with 20 goals and 54 points over parts of seven seasons with the Flyers. He played for four other teams over a 17-year career and his 3,149 penalty minutes are seventh in NHL history. Berube, in his seventh season coaching within the organization, was promoted to replace Laviolette. He is the 18th coach in franchise history. His hard-nosed style quickly rubbed off on the Flyers. "WWith the career he had, the type of player he was, hes not going to take anything from people," Mason said.dddddddddddd "Guys better be working hard." The Flyers offence had a brief jolt of life in the first period against Tim Thomas. Thomas had been sensational in his career in Philadelphia, going 8-0 with a 1.86 goals-against average and a .947 save percentage. He left the game with a pulled groin. He appeared to get tangled with teammate Mike Weaver in front of the net and hit the ice. Thomas bolted straight for the locker room and never returned. Jacob Markstrom took over and stopped all 25 shots. "Its different to come in a game like that, but what can you do," he said. "You just have to get out there and try to help out the team as best as you can." Thomas was pulled after the second period in Saturdays 7-0 loss to St. Louis. He allowed five goals on 28 shots. Thomas allowed two quick goals in the first against the Flyers. Schenn punched in a rebound for his second goal of the season. Thomas was out of position after he appeared to get hurt, allowing Coburn to score his first goal of the season. "Theyre lucky goals, that happens," Berube said. The Flyers scored two goals for the first time this season. With team captain Claude Giroux without a point this season, the Flyers were outscored 9-3. Just one goal in each game. The punchless offence is one reason Laviolette was fired just three seasons after he led them to the Stanley Cup finals. The Flyers know they have to play better. "It was a tough day yesterday," Giroux said. "I was with Lavy for a while, and to see him leave is a little sad. But its the business part of it. We need to understand that." The Flyers got a brief scare in the third when forward Scott Hartnell was slow to get up after defenceman Erik Gudbranson plowed him into the boards. Hartnell needed medical attention on the ice, but skated off on his own power. Gudbranson earned a game misconduct. Notes: There was a brief scrum in the third that saw Flyers F Jay Rosehill get hit with 4 minutes for roughing and a 10-minute misconduct. ...
