Playing the Winnipeg Jets is exactly why Nashville coach Peter Laviolette wanted home-ice advantage in the NHL playoffs.
Even if itâs a round â or two â earlier than anyone really wants.
Lavioletteâs Predators play Winnipeg in the Western Conference semifinals after turning in their best season in franchise history to grab the right to start and end a series in the place called âSmashville.â
They edged out their Central Division rival by a mere three points for the Presidentsâ Trophy http://www.falconsauthorizedshops.com/authentic-lo...sen-jer sey , and this will be just the fifth series since 1990 between the NHLâs top two teams in the regular season.
âThey wanted divisional battles, got them,â Laviolette said. âThis should be a big series.â
Itâs the second straight postseason that division foes and the leagueâs top finishers meet in this round. Pittsburgh, which wound up beating Nashville in the Stanley Cup Final, advanced to the Eastern finals by downing the Capitals in Game 7 in Washington.
Winnipeg and Nashville played so well that this series has been anticipated for weeks, so good it could be a Cup Final despite the Predators winning the regular-season series 3-1-1. Nashville defenseman P.K. Subban dismissed such talk Thursday, noting this round remains a long way from the Stanley Cup Final.
A thrilling series with lots of speed and goals? That the Jets and Predators can provide.
âThe thing about winning, and Iâm sure you ask anybody whoâs won a Cup, is the steps that it takes to get there,â Subban said. âYou have to go through some thick walls, and this is definitely one of the thickest walls that weâre going to have to get through to get there.â
Winnipeg goes against the defending Western Conference champs coming off the franchiseâs first postseason series victory after relocating from Atlanta in 2011 with 10 Jets making their playoff debuts against the Wild. Winnipeg center Bryan Little says that makes the Jets the underdogs by just a little bit.
âItâs going to be a really tough series and a tight series Markus Wheaton Jersey Eagles , so I think thatâs why everyoneâs so excited about it,â Little said.
Some things to know before Game 1 on Friday night:
VEZINA FINALISTS
Goalies for both the Jets and Predators are finalists for the Vezina Trophy with Nashville veteran Pekka Rinne looking to win the award in his fourth try.
Connor Hellebuyck made his postseason debut, shutting out Minnesota twice with a 1.94 goals-against average and .924 save percentage. Rinneâs numbers werenât nearly as glitzy against Colorado, but he tightened up over the final three games with a 1.34 GAA and .951 save percentage, including a shutout in the series clincher.
HOME AND ROAD
Nobody was better in the NHL at home than the Jets who went 32-7-2, and they have won 12 straight in Winnipeg, including all three in ousting Minnesota. The Jets havenât lost at home since Feb. 27 â to Nashville. The Predators were the leagueâs best away from home (25-9-7). The Predators won twice on the road in the first round, including clinching in Colorado in Game 6.
OFFENSIVE FIREPOWER
Even with Rinne and Hellebuyck in net, these teams combined for 42 goals in five games in the regular season with Nashville outscoring the Jets 22-20. It was the most goals the Jets scored against any team, while they also gave up the most goals to any opponent. The Jets also ranked second in the regular season for both most goals (273) and average goals per game (3.33)
SHUT DOWN WHO?
Nashvilleâs top trio is nicknamed the âJOFAâ line for Ryan Johansen, Filip Forsberg and Viktor Arvidsson. But the Predatorsâ top scoring line against Colorado was their third line of center Nick Bonino with Austin Watson and Colton Sissons Leighton Vander Youth Esch Jersey , who combined for 19 points. The Jets can match Nashvilleâs scoring depth with seven players scoring at least 43 points in the regular season led by Blake Wheeler (91 points) and Patrik Laine (team-high 44 goals).
SO DEFENSIVE
Nashville has four of the NHLâs best defensemen in Roman Josi, Ryan Ellis, Subban and Mattias Ekholm. But the group that led the league with 55 goals only had one goal in the first round, and that came in Game 6 from Ekholm. Subban says defending comes first for a team that ranked second in the regular season in allowing both the second-fewest goals (204) and average goals per game (2.49).

Wayne Simmonds just had to tap the puck over the blue line but couldnât. Then Andrew MacDonald fanned on a clearance.
Patrice Bergeron pounced on the extra chances, tying it for the Boston Bruins with 3.8 seconds left and leaving the Philadelphia Flyers stunned.
It took Jakub Voracekâs pep talk and Claude Girouxâs acrobatics to finally give Philadelphia a crucial win.
Giroux scored his second goal with 1:21 left in overtime and the Flyers recovered for a 4-3 victory over Boston on Sunday to inch closer to returning to the playoffs after a year absence.
âThe play at the end of the game is a play that canât happen. We all know that,â Flyers coach Dave Hakstol said of the stick-handling mishaps. âTake that puck and just push it out to the neutral zone.â
Dazed ahead of OT, Voracek implored his teammates to stay focused. Voracek then sprung Giroux on a breakaway. The captain faked out goaltender Anton Khudobin by acting like he was going to take the puck through his legs, only to snap a backhander for his career-best 29th goal.
âI just thought Iâd try that,â Giroux said, grinning.
Travis Konecny added a dazzling goal and an assist, Nolan Patrick also scored and Petr Mrazek made 36 saves for the Flyers. Philadelphia opened an eight-point lead over idle Florida Mike Remmers Jersey Elite , the last team that can overtake it for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference â the Flyers have three games left and the Panthers five.
Bergeron helped the ailing Bruins earn a point. With the goaltender pulled, Bergeron got his 30th goal on feed from Brad Marchand after the Flyersâ miscues.
âWe didnât have a ton of control, but we continued to stay on it,â Marchand said. âTried to force them to make plays, turn a couple of pucks over and it ended up in the net.â
Noel Acciari and David Pasrnak scored and Khudobin stopped 20 shots for the Bruins, who lost Brandon Carlo and Riley Nash to injuries a day earlier.
The Bruins welcomed Zdeno Chara back from an upper body injury a day after losing fellow defenseman Carlo to a possible serious leg injury, but they couldnât complete a season sweep of Philadelphia.
âWe got the point, but losing (stinks), Khudobin said.
Boston moved two points ahead of Tampa Bay atop the the Atlantic Division. The Lightning played later Sunday against Nashville.
A day after Vegasâ Willam Karlssonâs short-handed, between-the-legs goal was declared by many to be the NHLâs top goal this season, Konecny provided competition. His nifty stick work made it 2-0 just 25 seconds into the second period.
Konecny flicked the puck between two defenders along the boards Cheap Geron Christian Jersey , regained possession in the faceoff circle, went to his backhand to slip past a flailing Bergeron and then quickly switched back to his forehand and beat Khudobin from the slot for his 24th goal.
âI think it was just instinct. I reacted,â Konecny said. âWhen it happens, youâre just in the moment.â
But it was Giroux, who has a career-high 95 points, that came up with the final and most important tricky stick work.
âIâve seen some great highlight-reel goals throughout the year,â Hakstol said, âbut I donât think Iâve seen a better one than that.â
NOTES: Bruins D Torey Krug said he was hit in the face by Patrickâs high stick just before Patrickâs goal made it 3-1. . Flyers G Alex Lyon was recalled on an emergency basis to back up Mrazek as Michal Neuvirth (lower body) was unavailable. No. 1 G Brian Elliott (abdominal surgery) practiced Saturday and could return this week. . Bruins D Charlie McAvoy (knee) skated before the game and could return Tuesday. . Marchand, who was named the NHLâs second star of March, took a penalty when he cross-checked Andrew MacDonald in the face late in the second period.
UP NEXT
Bruins: Tuesday night at Tampa Bay in the second matchup in six days of the Eastâs top two teams.
