NEWARK, N.J. -- Jaromir Jagr and Martin Brodeur still know how to make the key plays that lead to wins. And the New Jersey Devils are thankful for that. "Our older guys were great," Devils coach Pete DeBoer said after Jagr scored two goals and Brodeur made 27 saves to lead the New Jersey Devils to a 4-1 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday night. "I dont know what kind of statement we can really make," Brodeur said of he and Jagr contributing to the Devils. "Its kind of nice. I think it goes a long way when you enjoy the game of hockey. At our age, if we didnt do that, it would be really, really hard to play this game. "And me and (Jagr), everyone can tell you we love being around here." Andy Greene and Adam Larsson also scored for New Jersey, which has won three of its past five. "Its big for us," Brodeur said. "Were looking to get back to .500 and from there, lets go forward. Were not there yet." Chris Kunitz scored for Pittsburgh. The Penguins have lost four of six. Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 18 of 21 shots. "Weve been in tight games, one-goal games," Penguins coach Dan Bylsma said. "We havent been able to win them. Thats a common theme." Jagrs first goal of the third period put the Devils up 3-1 at 14:06. Dainius Zubrus forced and recovered Kris Letangs offensive zone turnover before setting up Jagr for his sixth of the season. Jagr added an empty netter at 18:43. "He wasnt the weakest link on our line," Jagr joked when asked about Zubrus. "He was good." Despite being outshot 10-3 in the first period, it was the Devils who went into the first intermission with a 1-0 lead. Greenes second of the season opened the scoring with 18.4 seconds left in the period. Zubrus hit on Letang forced a turnover that Greene recovered at the half wall. The New Jersey defenceman fired a shot that appeared to ricochet off Fleurys pads and rolled into the net. "They get three shots in the first period and the puck gets deflected, bounces, and Marc-Andre Fleury never sees the puck until it hits him in the chest," Bylsma said. Kunitz tied the game 4:18 into the second with his ninth of the season. Adam Henriques pass from behind the Penguins net eluded Marek Zidlicky, and Kunitz outraced the New Jersey defenceman to the loose puck before flipping the puck past Brodeur. Larsson gave the Devils a 2-1 lead with 1:38 left in the second. Zubrus weaved his way through the neutral zone before finding Travis Zajac on the right wing. Zajac fired a cross-ice pass to a cutting Larsson, who roofed a shot over Fleury for his first goal of the season. The goal was Larssons first since Nov. 26, 2011, and only the third of his career. "It was pretty important for us," Larsson said of his goal. "Got a nice pass from (Zajac) and tried to get it to the net, and was lucky it went in." Brodeur and New Jerseys penalty killers made the lead hold up. Brodeur made 12 saves in the third, and the Devils killed both of Pittsburghs power plays in the period. Pittsburgh did not score on any of its four power plays. "We had our chances to score," Penguins star Sidney Crosby said. "I think (taking away the middle of the ice) is pretty typical of their team. Thats something we expected and we were willing to fight through that. We didnt turn the puck over that much. We got it deep and tried to generate things from there, but thats kind of the way they play. We understand that and we tried to get through it." New Jersey went 0 for 3 on the power play. NOTES: Pittsburgh called up centre Zach Sill from its AHL affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton before the game. Sill skated on the fourth line with Craig Adams and Tanner Glass. ... New Jersey defenceman Anton Volchenkov missed his second game in a row with what the team is calling "a lower body injury." Volchenkov suffered the injury in the first period of the Devils 3-2 win over the Rangers on Nov. 12 in New York. ... DeBoer did not know if defenceman Jon Merrill, who has missed five games after suffering facial lacerations and a concussion in the first period of New Jerseys 4-0 loss to the Minnesota Wild on Nov. 3, would travel with the team on its upcoming West Coast trip. Merrill participated in an optional skate Saturday morning. Will Sutton Jersey . -- The St. Johns IceCaps weathered a wild first period with the help of goaltender Jussi Olkinuora, before finding offensive inroads in the second. The Mustangs (6-0), who beat Queens 50-31 last weekend, earned 17 first-place votes and 287 points in voting by the Football Reporters of Canada. Speaking to the Chicago Tribune at baseballs Winter Meetings in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, Boras called the former home of the Expos a "tremendous environment" for baseball.TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Life off the field may be complicated for Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston and the second-ranked Seminoles, but things are simple between the lines. Winston threw for 225 yards and four touchdowns as Florida State broke a school record for points in a game in an 80-14 victory against Idaho Saturday. An ongoing sexual assault investigation of the Heisman Trophy candidate continues to cast a shadow over the program while the team focuses on football. State attorney Willie Meggs told The Associated Press on Saturday it is unlikely that a final decision will be made before Thanksgiving on whether to charge the quarterback. Patricia Carroll, the lawyer of the accuser, claims Winston raped the victim on Dec. 7, 2012. Winstons lawyer Tim Jansen said the sex between the two was consensual. "The football field is a sanctuary to me," Winston said. "And its like that for all of our teammates. When all of us are on the field everything is just zoned out. We focus." Florida State (11-0), second in the BCS standings, is two wins away from a likely berth in the BCS championship game with the regular-season finale at Florida next week. This is the first 11-0 start for the program since the 1999 national championship season and the first time going undefeated at home since 2000. The Gators (4-7) lost 26-20 to Georgia Southern on Saturday and will be heavy underdogs next week. Florida State should go into the Atlantic Coast Conference championship without a loss and be favoured again. A trip to Pasadena for the title game is nearly within its grasp. Winston, a Heisman Trophy front-runner, played just one series in the second half. "Its not right for the game," Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher said when asked about getting Winston better stats with more playing time. "People know he played well. ... He played exceptionally well and hes on a great team. "To me, stats arent the key for awards. Its how well you play, how you dominate your opponent and what you do. Thats my opinion. People who look at numbers dont really know the player." The Seminoles have dominated throughout the season, but 66 points was the largest margin of victory since a 69-3 win against Murray State in the 2012 season opener. They topped the 77 points the Seminoles scored in 1995 against North Carolina State in 1995 to remain unbbeaten.dddddddddddd. The 607 points scored by Florida State in 2013 broke the ACC single-season record set by the Seminoles last season. The 11 consecutive games of 40 points or more ties Texas 2005 single-season FBS record. Fisher, who criticized his teams focus early, admitted he was being picky, "but thats the elite standard we want to be held to." Devonta Freeman opened up the scoring with a 60-yard run on their seventh offensive snap of the game. That was the beginning of the punishing day for a run game that posted 336 yards rushing. He had 129 yards on 11 carries as the entire backfield got loose. Freeman is now the 14th player in school history to rush for 2,000. James Wilder Jr. carried an entire possession on his back in the second quarter. He capped a five-play, 85-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown with 5:54 left in the second quarter. Wilder carried the ball on four of those five plays and accounted for every yard. Karlos Williams added 114 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries. Kenny Shaw recorded his first 100-yard game of the season in the last home game of his career. He finished with 107 yards and two touchdowns on five receptions. Kelvin Benjamin hauled in two touchdowns on his three receptions and now has a touchdown in six of his last seven games. "I dont think our high school basketball team scored 80 points," Shaw said. The Vandals (1-10) were never competitive and that began at the line of scrimmage. They had no answer for nose guard Timmy Jernigan and couldnt create running lanes or protect the quarterback. Jernigan had a team-high 6 tackles, including 4 1/2 for loss and a career-high 2 1/2 sacks. "You know, what do you say when you get beat 80-14?" Idaho coach Paul Petrino said. "I wouldnt say anyone on that team didnt play well." Taylor Davis threw for 220 yards and a touchdown, but three interceptions turned into 14 points for Florida State. Linebacker Telvin Smith returned one of the interceptions 79 yards for a score in the second quarter. The Seminoles have now scored a non-offensive touchdown in three consecutive games. Idaho managed just 59 rushing yards and threw four interceptions. Dezmon Epps finished with 126 yards on seven receptions. "Weve just got a real good vibe about us," Jernigan said. "We just look to dominate week in and week out."
