PHILADELPHIA -- Lockout or not, Elton Brand is set to play basketball with his Philadelphia 76ers teammates. Brand helped organize a team workout scheduled for next week in Los Angeles and most of the key Sixers have told him they will attend. Andre Iguodala, Evan Turner, Lou Williams and others will fly in, share a hotel, play and work out together and do what they can to get ready for the season. Whenever that starts, no one is quite sure. "I cant wait to see where the guys are at," Brand said. "Ive been talking to them all summer. They seem to be in shape already in case we get this thing going." The lingering, messy lockout has thrown doubt that training camp and the regular season will start on time. These loosely organized team activities -- without any input or supervision from the coaching staff -- are as close as the Sixers can get to a training camp without travelling to Philadelphia. Brands weekly, upbeat off-season texts from coach Doug Collins have vanished from his BlackBerry. The Sixers have completely faded from Philadelphias bustling sports scene. But the numerous economic issues that have divided the players and owners are still a daily harsh reality for everyone connected with the sport. Brand attended an NBPA meeting this week in Los Angeles where the message from union leaders and superstars like Kobe Bryant and Paul Pierce was a simple one: Stick together. "I cant speak for the owners side, but on the players side, theres definitely a sense of urgency to meet and talk," Brand said. Brand has assumed the role of de facto team player rep. Jason Kapono held the position last season, but is a free agent now. Brand keeps in touch with Players Association executive director Billy Hunter and keeps his teammates informed. Brand, entering the fourth of a five-year contract, said "its tough to answer" if the Sixers really will open the season Nov. 2 in Toronto. "Ill have a better feel closer to training camp," Brand said. "As of now, it doesnt look good. It doesnt look good at all. I dont think were going to start with a normal training camp because the numbers are so far apart. But I think as training camp gets closer, well know more if we have to miss games." Brand hasnt ruled out playing overseas if the lockout drags into the regular season. Numerous players have said they would consider playing overseas. Nets all-star guard Deron Williams recently agreed to a deal with Besiktas of Turkey. Brand has made about US$126 million since his rookie year in 1999 and was set to make $17 million this season with the Sixers. So, if he went abroad, its not because he needs the cash. "If the season starts on Jan. 1, I would love to have a leg up on guys," Brand said. "I wouldnt want anyone to have a leg up on me. Thats why its been, as were inching closer, its been in my brain. I want to be in peak physical condition when the season starts." He misses the texts and conversations with Collins and the staff. When Quin Snyder, who recruited Brand to Duke, left his job as an assistant coach to join the Los Angeles Lakers, Brand couldnt even wish him congratulations and good luck. When Brand returns to work, hell have a new boss. Comcast-Spectacor sold the team to a group led by New York-based leveraged buyout specialist Joshua Harris. The deal is still awaiting approval by the NBA. When the Atlanta Hawks were sold earlier this month, new owner Alex Meruelo had to fight back tears as he talked about what it means to be the NBAs first Hispanic team owner. Harris, oddly, has decided to refrain from publicly talking about the Sixers and his plans for a franchise that hasnt won a championship since 1983. Brand said the team wont be the same without chairman Ed Snider around. "Were definitely going to miss him," Brand said, "and all hes done for the organization over the years." For a player who might temporarily be out of a job this fall, Brand has kept busy. He and Dallas centre Brendan Haywood participated in a youth camp in St. Maarten. Brand and his production company, Milk and Media, are reading scripts and greenlighting projects. Brand spent about 10 days in Louisiana earlier this summer -- "getting eaten up by insects" -- overseeing the psychological thriller, "No One Lives," starring Luke Evans. Backed by WWE and Pathe Films, Brand watched the dailies, oversaw script changes, and made sure shooting stayed true to the vision of the project. Brands next passion project is a film about hip hop artist and actor Tupac Shakur. And of course, hes been playing pickup games with other NBA players around Los Angeles. But hes antsy for the real deal to start. "The one thing Id want to get out there is for the fans to know we appreciate their support," he said. Rosberg secured the first pole position of his career with a blistering lap in the final qualifying session, while Schumacher will start from second after earning his first spot on the front row since his comeback in 2010. Rosberg was a full half-second ahead of McLarens Lewis Hamilton, who was given a five-place grid penalty this week for having to change his gearbox and will start Sundays race from seventh. That puts Schumacher right behind his teammate, as the German seven-time Formula One champion followed up his quick practice times by finishing third in the qualifying session. Rosberg completed just one lap in the third session and then returned to the pits, watching as rival after rival failed to come close to his time of 1 minute, 35.121 seconds. "It was strange beforehand because I was standing there on my own and everybody else was still going round and I cant do anything anymore," he said. "And then slowly but surely, I saw the sector times and I saw that it was definitely going to be enough, so fantastic." It was a disappointing day for defending world champion Sebastian Vettel, however, as the Red Bull driver failed to even make it into the final qualifying session and will start from 11th place. Schumacher is still looking for his first podium finish since returning to the sport in 2010, and Mercedes looks to have finally produced a car that can get him there. Even the German great, though, was surprised at how fast Rosberg was. "For all of us, to see the gap that big is a bit of a surprise, but there you go," Schumacher said. "Hes known as a good qualifier and no reason to be unhappy." The 26-year-old Rosberg captured his first pole in his 110th race in F1. Hes only had five podium finishes in his entire career. The true test for Mercedes, however, will come on Sunday. The team has been quick in qualifying this year, but then failed to keep up with the other teams in both races. Schumacher was third in qualifying in Malaysia, but then finished 10th in the race. Mercedes has been trying to remedy its quick tire degradation since then, and hopes to find out on Sunday whether the work has been successful. "In qualifying were very, very strong right now," Rosberg said. "In the race were still not quite as strong and not where we want to be yet. But also there, were learning a lot and progressing fast. The thing is we cant make huge jumps in a couple of weeks, its going to take a bit more time, bbut were getting there.dddddddddddd." Hamilton was attempting to top qualifying for the third straight race to start the season, but the McLarens could not match a Mercedes car which is perfectly suited for the China circuit and its very long straight. Saubers Kamui Kobayashi was an impressive fourth in qualifying, followed by Kimi Raikkonen of Lotus, Jenson Button of McLaren, Mark Webber of Red Bull and Sergio Perez of Sauber. Fernando Alonso of Ferrari and Romain Grosjean of Lotus rounded out the top 10. Even though Hamilton will have to work his way up through the field, the Briton is not discounting his teams chances on Sunday after a strong start to the season. Button captured the season-opening Australian GP and Hamilton has two third-place finishes. "Ive set my car up to be at its strongest in the race," Hamilton said. "So, although Jenson and I are a little bit further back than wed like, and weve got a bit of work to do, we can still make it. Theres a good group of drivers ahead of us on the grid, but were right with them in terms of race pace." Red Bull may need to wait a bit longer for its first win of the season. After dominating the 2011 season, the team has had a relatively lacklustre start to 2012, with just one podium finish -- Vettels second place in Melbourne. The German, who had won three consecutive poles in Shanghai, was well off the pace of teammate Webber in the second qualifying session Saturday. The Australian is using a revamped exhaust system this weekend, which Vettel had decided to forego as the reduced downforce did not suit his driving style. Its the first time Vettel wont start in the top 10 on the grid since Brazil 2009. "There was no problem with the car, but I couldnt get the final few tenths," he said. "We werent fast enough and we have to accept it." Saubers good run continued as both Kobayashi and Perez recorded their best results in F1 qualifying. "For quite a while, we have kept saying we need to improve our qualifying performance, and I think this was a clear improvement today," said Kobayashi, whose previous best result was eighth at last years British GP. "This grid position obviously means a lot of chances. However, I am not a dreamer and the target remains the same: score as many points as you can." The 22-year-old Perez is coming off a surprising second-place finish in Malaysia. The Mexican driver had expected to do better in the final qualifying session after clocking some fast times earlier in the day. "It is obviously a good qualifying result for our team," he said. "Personally I must admit I even hoped for more than (eighth)." ' ' '
