Looking at the NHL free agent class of 2012, there is not a lot of high-end talent in the class -- such is the standard in a league that tends toward handing out long-term contracts -- but there will always be interest when July 1 rolls around because free agency presents general managers with an opportunity to improve their team, merely by offering money as opposed to the other assets required to acquire talent through trades. The already-thin market could have fewer options still if tenured veterans like Teemu Selanne, Nicklas Lidstrom or Martin Brodeur retire, but its misleading in some ways to consider them part of the free agent market. They are so entrenched with their current franchises that they will either stick with their current clubs for another season or pack it in rather than shop their services around the league to the highest bidder. The two marquee unrestricted free agents that will be available this summer are Zach Parise and Ryan Suter. Parise, the Devils left winger, played only 13 games in 2010-2011, but has played 81 or 82 games in every other season and is coming off a campaign in which he played a career-high 21:29 per game. Hell be the free agent prize for any team seeking a first-line scoring winger. For teams in search of a top-pair defenceman, Suter played a career-high 26:30 per game and contributed a career-high 46 points. After those two, though, the rest of the free agent class comes with qualifications. Alexander Semin is a brilliant talent, but didnt have a great season; Ray Whitney had an outstanding year, but hes going to be 40; PA Parenteau has been very productive, but how much of that depends on playing with John Tavares? The questions exist for all and its the degree to which teams are comfortable taking those risks that will determine what kind of contracts await this summer. Of course, a new collective bargaining agreement could also have an impact on the desire for teams to spend big money on free agents, but well jump off that bridge when we get to it. For now, here is a look at the NHL unrestricted free agent class of 2012. Players are listed in terms of value, but value is going to mean different things to different teams, based on their circumstances, so its challenging to assign comparable value to a 35-year-old signing a one-year deal and a 27-year-old looking for a multi-year commitment. Consider the order that players are listed, then, as reasonable ranges. Maybe Jiri Hudler is worth more than Andrei Kostitsyn or David Jones is worth more, but that trio should have somewhat similar value. The age for all players is as of July 1, 2012. The TSN.ca Rating is an efficiency rating based on per-game statistics including goals and assists -- weighted for strength (ie. power play, even, shorthanded) -- plus-minus, hits, blocked shots, giveaways, takeaways, penalty differential and faceoffs. Generally, a replacement-level player is around a 60, a top six forward and top four defenceman will be 70-plus and the biggest stars will be over 80. Rodriguez ended his extended and acrimonious fight with Major League Baseball on Friday, withdrawing a pair of lawsuits that were filed in an attempt to overturn a season-long ban for his involvement in the Biogenesis scandal -- the longest penalty in the sports history related to performance-enhancing drugs. Jeter spoke Monday at the Yankees minor league complex. He said he has texted with A-Rod since the lawsuits were dropped. Rodriguez was given a 211-game ban last year by baseball Commissioner Bud Selig that was reduced to 162 plus the 2014 post-season by arbitrator Fredric Horowitz. A-Rod sued MLB and the union in federal court in Manhattan, claiming the arbitration process was flawed. Rodriguezs lawyers filed notices of dismissal in both cases. "Hes not here for this season, so were going to have to find ways to win with the team that we have," Jeter said Monday at the Yankees minor league complex. "Its a complicated situation, but its pretty much played out. Thats what has happened." "Youd have to ask him how he feels about it, if hes glad that its over with," Jeter said. "Its a situation that he has to deal with. Now its over and its done with, and well move on from there. But youd have to ask him how he feels about that." Rodriguez will be 39 when eligible to return in a year. The Yankees owe him $21 million in 2015 and $20 million in each of the final two seasons of a record $275 million, 10-year deal.
