BALTIMORE â Don Mattingly and Buck Showalter have a long association with each other Charles Tapper Jersey , going back to their days as minor league teammates with the New York Yankees.
Their relationship continued from 1990 to 1995 when Showalter coached and then managed Mattingly during his final six seasons with the Yankees, culminating in New Yorkâs first playoff appearance since 1981.
These days, both are presiding over last-place teams.
Things are better for Mattinglyâs Miami Marlins, who go for a three-game sweep Sunday at Camden Yards over Showalterâs Baltimore Orioles, who are on a nine-game losing streak.
The Marlins opened the series with a 2-0 victory and followed by getting two homers to center field from J.T. Realmuto in Saturdayâs 5-4 win.
Realmuto drove in four runs and posted his fourth multi-homer game for the Marlins (28-43), who are 8-4 in their last 12 games and within striking distance of the fourth-place New York Mets in the National League East.
âJTâs been great on both sides defensively and offensively calling the game, everything about himâs been great,â Mattingly told reporters.
Realmuto missed the first three weeks of the season with a bruised back but is hitting .309 with nine home runs and 26 RBIs.
Meanwhile, Baltimore is on its longest losing streak since also dropping nine straight in July 2011 when Showalter was in his first full season at the helm.
The Orioles (19-50) also tied the 2007 club record with their 11th straight home loss. Their next setback will give them a double-digit losing streak for the first time since May 26-June 5, 2010 â two months before Showalter took the job.
Manny Machado is doing his part for the worst team in baseball by hitting .308 with 18 homers and 52 RBIs. He drove in two runs Saturday and Jonathan Schoop homered.
Chris Davis, who is batting .150 with 86 strikeouts, has yet to see an at-bat in the series and could sit again Sunday for the Orioles, who own a .225 team average.
âIâd love to get back Chris Davis that we all know heâs capable of,â Showalter told reporters Friday. âIt hasnât been there this year, but with kind of a new approach and some new things youâre trying, all of a sudden you do it.â
The Orioles lost 50 of their first 68 games for the first time since 1988 when they opened with 21 straight losses. Baltimore also is 28 1/2 games behind the New York Yankees in the American League East.
On a team with a 4.88 ERA, Dylan Bundy (4-7 Bob Lilly Jersey , 3.66 ERA) is the closest thing to an ace for Baltimore. Bundy turned in eight scoreless innings when he allowed three hits Monday in Baltimoreâs 2-0 loss in 12 innings to the Boston Red Sox.
Bundyâs last start occurred after he pitched seven sharp innings in a 1-0 victory over the New York Mets on June 6 at Citi Field.
Monday was the fourth time this season that Bundy did not allow a run.. He has not given up a run in 17 innings since Washingtonâs Mark Reynolds homered off him in the fourth inning on May 29.
âYou could say that (itâs a good run),â Bundy told reporters. âBody feels good, arm feels great. Just taking the ball every five days and trying to give our team a chance to win.â
Sunday is Bundyâs first career appearance against the Marlins. In seven (six starts) interleague games, he is 4-2 with a 2.39 ERA.
Trevor Richards (1-3, 4.41 ERA) will make his eighth career start for Miami after his first career victory.
Richards picked up his first win Tuesday when he allowed one run and two hits in six innings of a 3-1 win over the San Francisco Giants.
On a team looking for young pitching, Richards has been among the more positive developments. Richards, undrafted out of Drury College, was Miamiâs minor league pitcher of the year in 2017 in at two levels and made his major league debut April 2.
In his seven starts, Richards has allowed three runs or fewer five times and owns two scoreless outings on April 14 against the Pittsburgh Pirates and April 25 at the Los Angeles Dodgers.
âHeâs been a good story, heâs thrown the ball well,â Mattingly told reporters. âObviously, pitcher of the year last year in the minor leagues, really good reports on his makeup and how he works, competes, and pays attention, so itâs good to see guys like that have success.â
Eduardo Escobar, yet again Ziggy Ansah Jersey , gave the Minnesota Twins the go-ahead hit.
Two of them, of course. Heâs become a doubles machine.
With a two-base hit that drove in two runs off Chris Sale in the sixth inning and another that launched a four-run eighth, Escobar led for the Twins to a 6-2 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday night.
âI donât know if he can keep up that kind of torrid pace, but weâre seeing a guy who is supremely confident,â Twins manager Paul Molitor said.
Robby Scott (0-1), just recalled from Triple-A, relieved Sale to start the eighth and walked the first two batters. Joe Kelly entered, and Escobarâs one-out line drive bounced in front of Jackie Bradley Jr. and skipped past the center fielder as two runs scored. The official scorer later changed his ruling from a single to a double, giving Escobar a majors-leading 32 for the season. Robbie Grossman broke the game open with a two-run triple.
Escobar is on a season-long pace for 75 doubles, which would blow by Earl Webbâs record of 67 doubles in 1931 for the Red Sox.
âLet me tell you: If they donât catch the ball Iâm going to run to second base, 100 percent,â Escobar said. âMy mentality when I make contact with the ball is to run all the way to second base.â
Escobar, who will be a free agent in the fall, has for the fourth straight season been slated for a utility role only to hit his way into regular duty after a setback in the infield. This year, injury and ineffectiveness for third baseman Miguel Sano paved Escobarâs way into the everyday lineup.
âIf he doesnât have a double a day, itâs like a disappointment right now. Heâs unbelievable. He always finds a barrel,â said teammate Trevor Hildenberger Ethan Westbrooks Jersey , who struck out American League RBI leader J.D. Martinez with runners at second and third to end the seventh after relieving Jose Berrios.
The Red Sox went 2 for 13 with runners in scoring position and left 11 men on base.
âWhenever you have a chance, you have to catch him,â Boston manager Alex Cora said.
MOUND MASTERY
The late surge masked a classic pitching duel between Sale and Berrios, the six-time All-Star against the budding ace. Sale retired the first 14 batters he faced before Ehire Adrianzaâs soft roller to Rafael Devers at third base went for an infield single.
With a two-out home run by Devers in the sixth off Berrios, the Red Sox were in control. All it took was a single by Ryan LaMarre and a hit by pitch for Joe Mauer, though, to start a rally in the bottom of the inning. With one out, Escobar drove a 1-1 slider near the dirt from Sale down the left-field line for a 2-1 lead. Escobar pumped his arms back and forth before clapping and pointing at his teammates in the dugout.
âYou know this guy. Every pitch is nasty,â said Escobar, once a minor league teammate of Saleâs in the Chicago White Sox system. âI guess I made good contact.â
Sale finished seven innings, the 12th time in 16 starts this season he has logged at least six. This was the 11th turn in which heâs yielded two runs or fewer and his fifth double-digit strikeout performance. In his last three starts, he has allowed only 11 hits in 21 innings. Yet the Red Sox are only 8-8 with him on the mound.
âIâm not going to hang my head about it. I know these guys in here want to win. I know theyâre not doing anything different on my day,â Sale said. âMaybe Iâll bring popsicles or something for the boys.â
REED RELIEF
Struggling Twins right-hander Addison Reed, who has appeared in only one of the previous six games, has been at least temporarily removed from his setup role. Zach Duke (3-2) took the eighth inning instead and, with two outs, surrendered Sandy Leonâs tying single that drove in Devers.
TRAINERâS ROOM
Red Sox: 2B Dustin Pedroia Pharoh Cooper Jersey , who has played in only three games this season because of inflammation in his left knee, has still not been cleared for baseball activities since returning to the DL three weeks ago. The lack of progress has been concerning, Cora acknowledged. âIt was major surgery. We didnât know what to expect. So we are where we are now, hoping that, yeah, heâll be back. When? We donât know,â Cora said.
Twins: RHP Ervin Santana, yet to appear this season because of a slow recovery from surgery on his middle finger, threw a 35-pitch bullpen session before the game. Heâll face live hitters on Friday, another step forward after his setback last month.
UP NEXT
Red Sox: LHP David Price (8-4, 3.76 ERA) pitches Wednesday night. He is 6-0 in his last seven starts, with two runs or fewer allowed in all but one of those, when he gave up three runs. Price is 10-3 with a 2.52 ERA in his career against the Twins.
Twins: RHP Lance Lynn (4-5, 4.98 ERA) takes the mound in the middle game of the series. Heâs 3-1 with a 2.01 ERA over his last five turns, with a .195 batting average against him and 30 strikeouts in 31 1/3 innings.
