Throwing out a blowout loss in the second-round series opener Patrik Laine Jersey , the San Jose Sharks believe theyâre getting closer to playing the way they want.
With that mindset, a breakthrough in Game 4 against the Vegas Golden Knights on Wednesday night would change things dramatically.
After splitting the first two games in Las Vegas, the Golden Knights regained the series lead with a 4-3 win in overtime on Monday at SAP Center. Center William Karlsson scored 8:17 into the extra session to complete his third straight multipoint contest.
But Sharks coach Peter DeBoer likes how the team has played â especially after a 7-0 loss last Thursday.
âI think weâre getting better every game,â he said Tuesday. âGame 1, you throw it out, but I thought the last two games, weâre starting to really play well. Weâre getting a feel for what we need to do.â
What San Jose needs to do is continue to get more pucks past Marc-Andre Fleury. He finished with 39 saves Monday, but none bigger than a glove grab of Logan Coutureâs shot from the slot early in overtime.
The three-time Stanley Cup winner is 6-1 with a 1.23 goals-against average and three shutouts during this postseason.
âHeâs not going anywhere,â DeBoer noted. âWeâre not the first team heâs done it to, so youâve got to stick with it, but the good news is weâre getting better. Weâre starting to put some pucks in the net.â
Since being blanked, San Jose scored seven goals in its last two games. So has Vegas.
âTheyâre a really good team, too Brendan Leipsic Jersey Kids ,â DeBoer said. âTheyâve got some high-end guys who are really opportunistic. When they get chances, they stick them in the net.â
That includes Karlsson, winger Reilly Smith and center Jonathan Marchessault, who have combined for seven goals and 19 assists during these playoffs.
Karlsson scored all nine of his postseason points â four goals and five assists â in a five-game streak, while Smith (goal, eight assists) has collected all of his points in a six-game run.
San Jose is aware that to have a better chance of tying the series, better discipline is needed. Trailing 1-0 in the second period Monday, the Golden Knights beat Martin Jones (1-2 with a 4.07 GAA in the series) with two straight power-play goals.
Vegas is 5-for-18 with the man advantage in this series after going 1-for-12 in a four-game sweep of the Los Angeles Kings in the first round.
How would Sharks captain Joe Pavelski combat that special teams success?
âItâs staying out of the box a little bit and the simple penalties â the pucks over the glass, too many men,â he said. âI expect the guys will be ready. Theyâll be ready to try and even this series out and itâs an important game for us, for sure.â
Fleury also preached the need to remain calm.
âItâs about staying disciplined during the game and having a full 60-minute effort so that we can play the way we want to play,â he said.
Game 5 is scheduled for Friday night in Las Vegas.
Tampa Bay Rays manager Kevin Cash has had to defend his strategy using relievers as starters time and time again.
At least this time, the defense came after the formula led his team to a victory.
Wilmer Font held the high-scoring Yankees in check and the Rays stopped New York 3-1 Sunday to avoid a four-game sweep.
âWeâre doing everything we can (and) what we think is right to win games http://www.officialsharks.com/authentic-adidas-log...ure-jer sey ,â Cash said. âWhen we win, yeah, we like it. When we lose, itâs grueling.â
In his third start of the season, Font turned in his best performance of the year in any role, allowing just one run in 4 2-3 innings with five strikeouts. The right-hander, who also has eight relief appearances, matched a career-high with 74 pitches.
Tampa Bay, which has been hurt by injuries to its rotation, employed a reliever to open for the 15th time in 29 games. Entering the game, relievers working as starters had allowed 13 earned runs in 18 innings.
âToday he gave us a huge boost,â Cash said of the 28-year old right-hander. âHe probably got a little deeper in the game than what we even anticipated.â
Matt Duffy drove in two runs with a second-inning single for his first multi-RBI game in over a month. The infielder, who missed 2017 while undergoing two Achilles surgeries Joel Armia Jersey Kids , is hitting .352 (25 for 71) with seven RBI over his last 18 contests.
âI typically donât see CC too well,â Duffy said. âThat wasnât the greatest pitch to hit, but when youâre going well, those seem to fall.â
Carlos Gomez had an RBI double as Tampa Bay scored all three runs in the second against CC Sabathia (4-2). The left-hander pitched into the eighth inning for the first time this season and struck out 10 for just the second time since the start of 2014.
âI just tried to be really aggressive because they were aggressive,â Sabathia said.
Tampa Bay defeated New York for the first time this season. The Yankees opened the season with five straight wins, outscoring the Rays 31-10 over the games, and was trying for a four-game sweep. The Rays are 5-18 in their last 23 games at Yankee Stadium.
Chaz Roe (1-1) pitched two scoreless innings for the victory. Sergio Romo, who has also drawn five starts this season, closed for his third save in six chances.
Rookie Willy Adames singled to lead off the Rays second. Adeiny Hechavarria, who missed nearly a month with a strained hamstring, singled for the first of his three hits. Gomez doubled and Duffy delivered a two-out single.
Hechavarria also robbed rookie sensation Gleyber Torres of a base hit with dive and throw from shortstop in the seventh inning.
New York matched its lowest run total at home this season.
Aaron Judge and Didi Gregorius worked two-out walks against Jose Alvarado in the fifth, but the hard-throwing lefty struck out Giancarlo Stanton on four pitches.
In the eighth, Diego Castillo struck out Gary Sanchez on three pitches to strand another runner.
Aaron Hicks homered off Font in the fifth â it was actually the second homer of the day. Hours earlier http://www.officialcanucks.com/authentic-adidas-he...din-jer sey , the Yankees held their 72nd Old-Timersâ Day and Nick Swisher, making his debut with the former players, hit a long drive to right field.
