Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Mike Williams wasn't himself as a rookie.
Back and knee injuries limited him to 11 receptions in 10 games last season Evgenii Dadonov Jersey Kids , and a hamstring injury during OTAs this year had Williams wondering when his body would allow him to show why the Chargers selected him No. 7 overall in the 2017 draft.
Finally healthy, Williams has performed in training camp like the dominant receiver he was at Clemson.
"Not being able to do the things I'm used to doing, that was the main thing. Not being able to move how I want to move. Now I'm able to come out here and, you know, play how Mike Williams plays, so I'm feeling comfortable right now," Williams said.
Offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt had no doubts about Williams' ability to contribute at a high level after making 98 receptions for 1,361 yards and 11 touchdowns for the Tigers' 2016 national championship team. It was just a matter of staying on the field.
Whisenhunt pointed to the improvement Williams showed during the regular season, when he had seven catches for 62 yards in the two games against Jacksonville and Buffalo prior to sustaining the knee injury against Dallas on Thanksgiving Day.
"I think the thing with Mike that's pretty consistent is when he gets an amount of time where he's in a routine, he starts to get better," Whisenhunt said.
A consistent schedule was lacking for Williams in 2017. He sustained a herniated disc in his lower back on the first day of rookie minicamp in May, an injury that kept him out of training camp last year. The progress Williams made this offseason was interrupted by a minor hamstring strain Joel Armia Jersey Kids , but he recovered in time to run and lift weights every day and do yoga at least twice a week going into his first training camp.
The difference in Williams' health has been evident. Always known as a receiver that uses his size effectively, he has been making contested catches consistently against the Chargers' strong crop of defensive backs.
"He goes up and attacks the ball," safety Jahleel Addae said. "That's the biggest thing you see with him is he can use his body to shield off defenders. He can go up and grab it, and that's something we need, for sure."
At 6-foot-4 and 220 pounds, Williams' physical traits could be especially valuable with tight end Hunter Henry out for the season because of a torn ACL. All but one of Henry's 12 career touchdowns receptions have been in the red zone, with eight coming inside the 10-yard line. Getting Williams matched up on jump balls at the goal line could offset those losses.
But Whisenhunt wants Williams to be more than a red-zone specialist. Whisenhunt and wide receivers coach Phil McGeoghan have been training Williams to line up all over the field, using Keenan Allen as the model for versatility.
"He set the standard of being able to line up in different spots and be successful, and that's what we're trying to do a little bit with Mike to create those matchups where we can use his size and hopefully those things can work out," Whisenhunt said.
Route running is one area where Williams is already emulating Allen, citing him as an influence for his development there.
"He sets defenders up so good, it's just good for me to come out here and learn from someone like him Leon Draisaitl Jersey ," Williams said. "I take a lot from his game."
All aspects of Williams' improvement were evident when the Chargers scrimmaged Saturday as he made two touchdown receptions.
"The confidence comes with making plays," Williams said.
NOTES: Defensive end Joey Bosa left practice early Tuesday because of a left foot injury.
HOUSTON â While it certainly factored into the sluggish start that greased the skids to their demise in Game 1, the Utah Jazz were inundated with a number of causes behind their loss to the Houston Rockets on Sunday in addition to the absence of starting point guard Ricky Rubio.
Defensively, the Jazz were overrun by the Rocketsâ exceptional 3-point shooting (17 for 32) and victimized early by some leaky transition defense. Rockets guard James Harden again tormented the Utah defense, cashing in seven 3s en route to a game-high 41 points, and the Jazz lacked energy in the first half following a short turnaround from the completion of their first-round series against the Oklahoma City Thunder less than 48 hours prior to tipoff.
But the Jazz clearly missed Rubio, despite recording 20 assists on 38 field goals. While rookie guard Donovan Mitchell and veteran swingman Joe Ingles produced five assists each, and Utah received steady play from guards Dante Exum and Alec Burks off the bench, the Jazz didnât quite have that same verve that Rubio provides with his ball-handling skill and passing acumen.
âI think it makes Donovan handle the ball more than they would like,â said Rockets forward Trevor Ariza, who drew the primary defensive assignment on Mitchell. âHeâs their dominant scorer at this point so when he has to handle the ball and get everybody involved in the game, it kind of takes away from him scoring the ball all the time or being aggressive all the time.â
The Jazz also missed the defensive presence of center Rudy Gobert Scott Darling Jersey , despite the fact that Gobert logged 35 minutes in the 110-96 loss. A Defensive Player of the Year candidate and league leader by a healthy margin in defensive real plus-minus, Gobert was a non-factor on that end, failing to record a block for the first time this postseason and just the eighth time overall.
Gobert averaged 2.3 blocks and ranked second in the NBA in block percentage (6.0), yet the Rockets had success attacking the rim with Gobert stationed there to defend it, shooting 8 of 9 with Gobert within three feet of the rim. The key to their success? Doing what comes naturally.
âWe just try to be us as much as possible,â Rockets guard Chris Paul said. âI think James said it after last game: Weâve seen just about every defense you can have this past season, so if they switch, we adjust. If you back (up to protect the rim), we adjust. We just keep playing.â
Utah, conversely, canât afford to maintain the status quo. The Rockets rode robust shooting to a 27-point, first-half lead and continued to exploit a Jazz defense that has stifled almost every other opponent. Harden averaged 34.3 points on 55.4 percent shooting against Utah during the season and looked alarmingly at ease attacking the Jazz off the dribble and from the perimeter.
Rubio Authentic Kyle Quincey Jersey Kids , out with a left hamstring strain, wonât be available to save the Jazz on offense. Defensively, Utah understands exactly what is required to ensure a superior performance.
âIt takes all five guys on the court communicating, thatâs for sure,â Jazz forward Jae Crowder said. âBut you have to accept it. So, if theyâre cross-matching and theyâre running back you just got to demand the guy (to defend in transition) and stick with him for that possession and work it out. And that causes every guy on the court to know each guyâs tendencies and what he likes to do.
âSo, you have to communicate on the court very well in the situation that weâre putting ourselves, which is in transition and working itself out in the half court and getting these guys in front of us and making it as tough as possible.â
