Itâs rare for a franchise player in his prime to leave an NHL team via free agency or trade.

Toronto signed John Tavares away from the New York Islanders to make the biggest splash in free agency.
The 28-year-old center with a $77 million, seven-year contract sounds motivated to validate his hometown Maple Leafs making such an investment in him.
âI think thereâs a lot to prove,â Tavares said. âResting on what youâve already done is where you can kind of get caught especially as your career goes on. Every day, each season, you have to go out there and prove yourself again. â
Tavares, a five-time All-Star, had 80-plus points last season for the third time and has averaged nearly 70 points over his nine-year career. And, heâs regarded as one of the best two-way players in the league.
After missing out on the Tavares sweepstakes in July, San Jose acquired 28-year-old defenseman Erik Karlsson from Ottawa two-plus months later.
âWe were looking for a difference-maker,â Sharks general manager Doug Wilson said. âThereâs not many of them in this league.
âThereâs not many of them that come available.â
The Sharks gave up a package of young players and picks to get the five-time All-Star and two-time Norris Trophy winner to greatly improve their chances of competing for the Stanley Cup.
Hereâs a look at some of the other major moves, entering the season:
STAYING PUT
The best players in the league usually are paid to stay with their team and off the free agency market or in trade talks and this year has been no exception.
Los Angeles made sure two-time Stanley Cup-winning defenseman Drew Doughty , who won the Norris Trophy two years ago, wasnât going anywhere. The Kings signed him to an eight-year, $88 million contract extension through keeps him under contract through the 2026-27 season.
Tampa Bay kept leading scorer Nikita Kucherov off the market for a long time Authentic Louis Domingue Jersey , signing him to an eight-year, $76 million contract extension.
The Dallas Stars made an big commitment recently to center Tyler Seguin , giving him a $78.8 million, eight-year extension after he had at least 72 points for the for the fifth season in a row.
Washington defenseman John Carlson could have cashed in elsewhere after winning a Cup and having a career-high 68 points. He chose, though, to re-sign with a $64 million, eight-year deal to stay with the team that drafted him a decade ago.
TRADE WINDS
The Vegas Golden Knights bolstered their shot at repeating as Western Conference champions by acquiring forward Max Pacioretty from Montreal earlier this month. Theyâre expecting him to bounce-back from an injury-shortened season to contribute 60-plus points as he has five times in his 10-year career.
The St. Louis Blues acquired center Ryan OâReilly , who set an NHL record for winning 1,273 faceoffs last season, in the hopes of avoiding a second straight season without a playoff appearance.
WELCOME BACK
The Kings beat out other suitors to sign Ilya Kovalchuk to a three-year, $18.75 million contract. The 35-year-old, three-time All-Star forward has been playing in Russia since leaving New Jersey and the league in 2013.
MOVING BENCHES
Soon after helping Washington hoist the Stanley Cup and having a contract dispute, coach Barry Trotz left to lead the New York Islanders.
ON THE WAY OUT
Tampa Bay Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman raised eyebrows when he stepped down from his job to become an adviser entering the last year of his contract. Fans in Detroit are hoping that is a sign the Hall of Famer made the move to clear a path for him to return to run the Red Wings.

Atlanta at Philadelphia Roman Josi Jersey , 4:35 p.m. EST. Matt Ryan passed for 218 yards and hit Julio Jones for an 8-yard touchdown with 5:48 to play to lead the defending NFC champion Falcons (11-6) past the Los Angeles Rams 26-13 in the wild-card round. Nick Foles played well for the first five quarters he filled in for the injured Carson Wentz, but then struggled in the past five for the Eagles (13-3), who had a first-round bye.

Tennessee at New England, 8:15 p.m. EST. The Titans (10-7) earned their first playoff victory in 14 years when Marcus Mariota rallied Tennessee to a 22-21 win over Kansas City after trailing by 18 points at halftime. Tom Brady and the Patriots (13-3) have home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs as they begin their postseason with an opportunity to repeat as Super Bowl champions.

Passing
â Drew Brees, Saints, passed for 376 yards and two touchdowns, and New Orleans held off Carolinaâs late comeback bid to seal a 31-26 victory in their NFC wild-card game.
â Cam Newton, Panthers, threw for 349 yards and two TDs in a losing cause as Carolina fell to New Orleans.

Rushing
â Blake Bortles, Jaguars, ran for 88 yards and passed for 87 yards and a touchdown in Jacksonvilleâs 10-3 win over Buffalo, becoming the second starting quarterback in the past 25 seasons to win a playoff game with more yards rushing than yards passing.

Receiving
â Michael Thomas and Ted Ginn Jr., Saints. Thomas had eight catches for 131 yards, while Ginn caught four passes for 115 yards Youth Corey Crawford Jersey , including an 80-yard touchdown against Carolina.
â Ben Koyack, Jaguars, caught the go-ahead 1-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter of Jacksonvilleâs victory over Buffalo.
â Greg Olsen and Christian McCaffrey, Panthers. Olsen had eight receptions for 107 yards and a score, and McCaffrey caught six passes for 101 yards, including a 56-yard TD.

Special Teams
â Brad Nortman, Jaguars, booted nine punts for a 42.0 net average, including a 62-yarder, in Jacksonvilleâs win over Buffalo.
â Graham Gano, Panthers, made up for an early miss by kicking field goals of 27, 39, 58 and 29 yards in Carolinaâs loss to New Orleans.

Defense
â Jalen Ramsey Andre Burakovsky Jersey , Jaguars, tipped and then intercepted Nathan Petermanâs third pass of the game in place of the injured Tyrod Taylor to seal Jacksonvilleâs 10-3 win over Buffalo.
â Vonn Bell, Saints, had nine total tackles and the victory-sealing sack of Cam Newton in New Orleansâ victory.

STREAKS & STATS
Jacksonvilleâs 10-3 win over Buffalo was its first playoff victory since beating Pittsburgh 31-29 in the wild-card round on Jan. 5, 2008. ⦠Drew Breesâ 80-yard TD pass to Ted Ginn Jr. in New Orleansâ 31-26 win over Carolina was the longest play from scrimmage by the Saints this season and their longest score in the playoffs since Reggie Bushâs 83-yard punt return in 2009. It was also the longest play from scrimmage allowed by Carolina this season. ⦠The playoff game between the Saints and Panthers marked the first since the NFL-AFL merger in 1970 in which kickers from both teams made a field goal of 55 yards or longer: Carolinaâs Graham Gano made a 58-yarder and New Orleansâ Wil Lutz kicked a 57-yarder.

MILESTONES
Blake Bortlesâ 88 yards rushing in Jacksonvilleâs 10-3 win over Buffalo were the most by a Jaguars quarterback in a single game in franchise history â regular season or playoffs. ⦠New Orleans became the first team in NFL history to score 30 or more points against a team (Carolina) three times in a single season and win all three games. The Saints are also the first team to beat an opponent three times in the same season since the 2009 Dallas Cowboys did it against Philadelphia.

BLAKE THE SNAKE
Jacksonvilleâs Blake Bortles became the second starting quarterback in the past 25 seasons to win a playoff game with more rushing yards than passing yards (88 rushing, 87 passing). The other was Atlantaâs Michael Vick in the 2004 divisional round against the Rams (119 rushing, 82 passing).

SPREADING THE WEALTH
New Orleansâ 31-26 win over Carolina was the first playoff game to feature multiple 100-yard receivers for each team since the 2009 AFC championship game. The Saintsâ Michael Thomas (131) and Ted Ginn Jr. (115), and the Panthersâ Greg Olsen (107) and Christian McCaffrey (101) joined Indianapolisâ Pierre Garcon and Austin Collie, and the New York Jetsâ Jerricho Cotchery and Braylon Edwards in performing the feat.

SIDELINED
Buffalo quarterback Tyrod Taylor slammed his helmet hard against the ground after getting thrown down by Dante Fowler Jr. with 1:27 remaining in the Billsâ 10-3 loss at Jacksonville. Taylor had to be helped off the field and forced backup Nathan Peterman into the game. ⦠Jaguars linebacker Paul Posluszny left with a hip injury, tried to return and then headed to the locker room for further evaluation. He was listed as questionable and returned to the sideline after halftime. Receiver/punt returner Jaydon Mickens left with a hamstring injury and did not return. ⦠Saints starting left guard Andrus Peat was carted off the field with a left shin injury in New Orleansâ win over Carolina. His replacement, Senio Kelemete, later needed help off the field for an undisclosed injury.
