A nine-game stretch against the National Leagueâs three last-place teams â Miami Patrick Roy Jersey , Cincinnati and San Diego â seemed like a chance for the St. Louis Cardinals to fatten their record and make a surge up the National League Central ladder.
Instead, St. Louis wasnât even able to tread water. It went 4-5 in that span, including consecutive 4-2 losses Tuesday and Wednesday night to a San Diego Padres team that currently looks like a cellar-dweller in name only, having won five straight series.
Now the Cardinals (36-30) will have to get their work done against better teams. Beginning with the opener of a three-game series Friday night in Busch Stadium against the Chicago Cubs (38-27), they play 19 straight games against teams that currently have winning records.
Whatâs more, theyâll play this weekend without their most consistent hitter, first baseman Jose Martinez, who leads the team in all three Triple Crown categories (.321 average, 10 HR, 42 RBIs). Heâll miss the series on paternity leave in Venezuela.
âItâs a big series for us, but thatâs a monumental life event,â St. Louis manager Mike Matheny said.
Luke Voit will be recalled from Double-A Springfield to replace Martinez on the roster. The big right-handed hitter could get a couple of starts this weekend as Chicago will trot out left-handed starters Jon Lester and Jose Quintana.
Lester (7-2, 2.22 ERA) gets the call in the series opener, which, if this yearâs form is any indication Youth Mikko Koivu Jersey , may become a pitcherâs duel. Heâll be opposed by right-hander Michael Wacha (8-1, 2.47), who will seek his ninth straight win.
Lester is coming off a 2-0 win Saturday at Wrigley Field against Pittsburgh, allowing only one hit in seven innings with two walks and five strikeouts. In his last eight starts, Lester is 5-1 with a 1.63 ERA, and he hasnât permitted a run in his two starts this month.
Heâs 1-0 in two starts this year against the Cardinals, permitting only two earned runs in 11 1/3 innings. In his career against St. Louis, Lester is 6-4 with a 2.22 ERA in 16 starts, limiting hitters to a .220/.282/.344 slash line.
Wacha hasnât lost since March 31 against the New York Mets and is building a case for his second All-Star appearance. In his last start on Saturday, Wacha beat Cincinnati 6-4, permitting four hits and two runs in 5 2/3 innings with three walks and six whiffs.
He has faced the Cubs once this year, working 5 1/3 innings and yielding two runs (one earned) on May 6 in a no-decision as the Cardinals won 4-3 in 14 innings. But Wacha has been rocked most of his career against Chicago, as heâs 4-7 with a 6.12 ERA in 17 outings, including 15 starts.
Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo has had his way with Wacha, going 18-of-40 in his career with three homers. Chicago teammates Ian Happ Womens Jared McCann Jersey , Kris Bryant and Willson Contreras also have two homers each against Wacha.
The Cubs lost two of three in Milwaukee this week, suffering 4-0 and 1-0 losses in the seriesâ final two games and falling 1 1/2 games behind the Brewers in the Central.
âWe almost should be grateful we won one of three,â Chicago manager Joe Maddon said. âWe played well the first game, then shutout, shutout.â
Max Scherzer had gone more than two months without a defeat. Now the Washington Nationals ace has lost consecutive starts for the first time in nearly three years.
Marco Estrada took a shutout into the seventh inning, Devon Travis homered and the Toronto Blue Jays beat Scherzer and the Nationals 2-0 on Saturday.
Scherzer (10-3) gave up four hits, including the two-run homer by Travis, in six innings. The two-time NL Cy Young Award winner struck out 10, increasing his major league-leading total to 152.
Scherzer has 10 double-digit strikeout games this season, four more than any other pitcher.
Beaten by a two-run home run from San Franciscoâs Brandon Crawford in his previous outing, Scherzer saw this start turn on another two-run homer, with Travis jumping on a hanging slider in the fifth.
âThis is Major League Baseball,â Scherzer said. âOne pitch can cost you a game. Now Iâve had it happen twice in back-to-back starts. You can get beat like that. Iâve got to keep executing every single pitch I throw.â
Scherzer last lost two straight starts in a three-game skid in August 2015.
âHe pitched really well,â Nationals manager Dave Martinez said. âOne mistake.â
Travis homered for the second game in a row, going deep to right after Scherzer hit Luke Maile with a pitch.
âHe doesnât make many mistakes so when he does Youth Dion Phaneuf Jersey , youâd better hope you take advantage of it,â Travis said. âIf not, itâs probably the only one youâre going to get for the day.â
Estrada (4-6) allowed three hits, one a bunt single, over 6 2/3 innings to win back-to-back starts for the first time this season.
âHeâs a big-game pitcher and thatâs a really tough lineup over there,â Travis said of Estrada. âHe did a fantastic job today.â
The Blue Jays posted their first shutout since Aug. 10, 2017 against the Yankees, snapping a franchise-long 117-game span between shutouts.
Trea Turner hit a two-out double in the sixth, but Estrada struck out Bryce Harper looking. An exasperated Harper was caught looking again to end the eighth, stranding a runner at first. Harper went 0 for 4 with two strikeouts, dropping his average to .221.
âWhat I think Iâd like for him to do is maybe not swing so much,â Martinez said. âHeâs been swinging a lot, and I really think now is the time to take less swings and just go play.â
Washington has been blanked three times in five games, including Scherzerâs 2-0 loss to San Francisco on June 10 and a 3-0 road loss to the Yankees on June 12.
âItâs surprising but it happens,â Martinez said. âSometimes you run into good pitchers.â
Estrada left after Michael A. Taylorâs two-out single put runners at first and second in the seventh. Danny Barnes came on and needed two pitches to retire Wilmer Difo on a groundout.
Barnes and Aaron Loup each got two outs and former Nationals closer Tyler Clippard finished the three-hitter for his third save in six opportunities.

Travis said it can be tough to get a good nightâs rest when Scherzer is scheduled to pitch the following day.

Nationals: 1B Matt Adams was out of the lineup one day after taking a pitch off his left hand while attempting to bunt. X-rays Friday were inconclusive because of swelling, so Adams will have another X-ray when the Nationals return home Monday. With Adams unavailable, Daniel Murphy started at first, his first defensive action since returning from knee surgery Tuesday.
UP NEXT
Nationals RHP Tanner Roark (3-7, 3.63) faces Blue Jays RHP Sam Gaviglio (2-2, 3.66) in Sundayâs series finale. Roark has won just once in his past seven starts. Gaviglio allowed a season-worst five earned runs in Mondayâs loss at Tampa Bay, his second straight losing decision.
