PITTSBURGH (AP) â Jonny Venters thought he had given up a tying home run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning.âIt sounded loud http://www.dodgersfanproshop.com/authentic-manny-m...ado-jer sey ,â the Atlanta Bravesâ reliever said. âI thought it was gone.âGregory Polancoâs drive to right field hit off the top of the 21-foot wall, however, and he was held to a double.Venters then got Francisco Cervelli to hit a game-ending comebacker, preserving Atlantaâs 2-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday night.Ronald Acuna Jr. hit another leadoff home run and Freddie Freeman had a tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the eighth inning to lift Julio Teheran and the Braves to a three-game sweep.Polanco was disappointed his drive did not clear the high wall.âItâs unbelievable, man,â he said. âI hit the ball really hard. Itâs PNC (Park), man. Every other park, thatâs a homer.âAcuna hit the fifth pitch out to left-center off Trevor Williams. It was the rookieâs 20th homer and sixth leading off the first inning, including four in the last two weeks.âHeâs so exciting,â Teheran said. âYou expect him to hit a long ball every time he comes up.âThe NL East leaders went ahead 2-1 in the eighth when Freeman Logan Forsythe Jersey , who leads the league in hitting, sent a fly ball to deep left field off Edgar Santana. That came after Atlanta loaded the bases against Kyle Crick (2-2), who did not retire any of the three batters he faced.âYouâd love to score five or six runs every night, but thatâs not always going to happen,â Freeman said. âThese are the types of games you have to win in a pennant race. Itâs a really good win for us.âAtlanta moved three games ahead of the second-place Phillies, who lost 8-7 at Washington.Freemanâs sac fly made a winner of Teheran (9-7), who allowed one run and two hits in seven innings while striking out five and walking one. Teheran is 2-0 with a 2.93 ERA in his last five starts.Brad Brach struck out pinch-hitter David Freese with a runner on third to end the eighth. Venters completed the three-hitter and earned his second save.Atlanta also mustered only three hits but won for the 17th time in 25 games. It was seven years to the day since Venters converted his last save for the Braves on Aug. 22, 2011, at the Chicago Cubs. The left-hander missed five major league seasons from 2013-17 while recovering from three Tommy John operations. He returned this year with the Tampa Bay Rays. The Braves acquired Venters in a July trade and he got his first opportunity to fill in for injured closer A.J. Minter (lower back tightness) on Wednesday.âI told Jonny I might be using him in some save situations and he was ready,â Braves manager Brian Snitker said. The Pirates got their run in the fifth when Colin Moran broke up Teheranâs no-hit bid with a two-out RBI single. Pittsburghâs only other hit was a two-out single by Cervelli. The Pirates have scored just 16 runs in their last 10 games http://www.dodgersfanproshop.com/authentic-mark-lowe-jersey , going 2-8.Williams had another strong outing, permitting one run and two hits in six innings, but again was hurt by a lack of run support. Williamsâ ERA is 0.97 ERA in six starts since the All-Star break, yet his record is just 3-2. He is also 1-2 in four August starts despite a 1.44 ERA.âHeâs pitched so well, and he pitched so well again tonight,â Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle said. âIt was just fun to watch him out there like a kid in the backyard going to work.âTRAINERâS ROOMBraves: C Kurt Suzuki (bruised left triceps) was out of the lineup after being hit by a pitch but is not expected to go on the disabled list. C Chris Stewart was called up from Triple-A Gwinnett to serve as a backup, and OF Michael Reed was optioned to the Stripers.Pirates: RHP Chris Archer (left leg discomfort) is listed as the scheduled starter Sunday at Milwaukee. He left his start Monday night against Atlanta after four innings. ⦠2B Josh Harrison (strained left hamstring) did not start for a third straight game but struck out as a pinch-hitter. ⦠INF-OF Sean Rodriguez (strained left abdominal muscle) is likely to begin a rehab assignment in the next few days. ⦠SS Jordy Mercer (strained left calf) took batting and fielding practice. ⦠INF Jung Ho Kang (left wrist surgery), on the disabled list at Triple-A Indianapolis, has been cleared to begin gripping exercises.TRICK SHOT ARTISTBraves second baseman Ozzie Albies hit a foul ball in the seventh inning that rebounded off the netting behind home plate and struck him on top of his batting helmet.TURN BACK THE CLOCKThe Braves announced their weeknight and Sunday afternoon home games will begin 15 minutes earlier next season at 7:20 p.m. and 1:20 p.m., respectively.UP NEXTBraves: Open a four-game series Thursday night at Miami Kenta Maeda Jersey , with LHP Sean Newcomb (10-6, 3.73 ERA) facing RHP Dan Straily (4-6, 4.60).Pirates: Begin a three-game series Friday night at Milwaukee, with RHP Joe Musgrove (5-7, 3.31 ERA) starting against LHP Wade Miley (2-2, 2.18). LOS ANGELES â The Los Angeles Dodgers will send their longtime staff ace to the mound Tuesday in a key National League West clash, while the Colorado Rockies will have their difference maker poised for another second-half masterpiece.September matchups with a division title on the line do not get much better than three-time Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw against outside Cy Young contender Kyle Freeland in a must-see duel of left-handers.The Dodgers will enter Tuesday with a half-game lead on the Rockies after beating their division rival 8-2 on Monday in the opener of a three-game series at Dodger Stadium.Article continues below ...âIn September (great matchups) get elevated because of the situation,â Rockies manager Bud Black said. â(Tuesday) is a good one just because our guy has been pitching great and their guy has been pitching great for about 10 years. What can you say? The left-handedness is pretty cool too.âFreeland is not only 15-7 with a 2.96 ERA this season, he is 9-2 at Coors Field with a 2.36 ERA. Numbers like that should give him extra credit in the Cy Young chase, but he probably is not going to get enough of it to edge out other award contenders like Aaron Nola of the Phillies Matt Kemp Jersey , Max Scherzer of the Nationals and Jacob deGrom of the Mets.In three starts against the Dodgers this season, Freeland is 1-1 with a 2.79 ERA.Kershaw has been there and done that when it comes to a late-season Cy Young Award drive. He has gone through two separate disabled-list stints this season, and even though he hasnât looked like a no-hitter waiting to happen like in recent years, he has been plenty good enough.Kershaw is 7-1 with a 2.39 ERA in 15 starts since returning from a back injury that wiped out three weeks in June.âI think that people want to look at, I guess, the strikeout percentage, but if you look at what heâs done and how efficient, how successful he is, he is our ace,â Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. âHeâs doing it a little bit of a different way Rich Hill Jersey , but he might argue that. Heâs still an elite pitcher and heâs our No. 1.âKershaw will be tasked with facing what Roberts called one of the best top of the orders in the game from Rockies leadoff man Charlie Blackmon to DJ LeMahiey, Nolan Arenado and cleanup hitter Trevor Story. In the fourth inning Monday, though, Story left the game with an apparent back injury. That foursome has been the heart and soul of the Rockies for a few years now. Freeland at the top of the pitching rotation has turned the Rockies into a title contender. But even though Colorado has appeared in a World Series, it has never won an NL West title. After Tuesday, the Rockies have just one more chance on Wednesday to create some space between them and the Dodgers. The offense in L.A. is currently being powered by a focused Yasiel Puig, who was named NL player of the week, mostly for a two-game flurry over the weekend in St. Louis when he hit five home runs in two games. But Joc Pederson emerged Monday to hit a pair of home runs.
