Aluminum is one of the most used metals around the globe and is considered extremely light and flexible while to being resistant to corrosion. Aluminum is integral to automative, aerospace, construction and packaging industries. Hewever, one of the most overlooked byproducts, during the machining and processing of aluminum, is the aluminum chip. Aluminum chips are produced anytime one manufactures an aluminum part. During the machining of aluminum, large volumess of chips accumulate daily and have traditionally considered to be of little value. These chips have traditionally been considered to be of value and have been swept up and placed in the trash; however, the aluminum chips are not without value. The Value of the chips have been discovered and the chips have been placed back into the production and recycling loop of industry.

The advantages of recycling aluminum chips are numerous. To begin with, it alleviates the pressure surrounding the production of aluminum. Primary aluminum production is extremely costly in both money and environmental impact (because of extensive chemical processing and greenhouse gas emissions). Comparatively, recycling aluminum chips represents a small fraction of the cost. In fact, recycling aluminum represents a cost saving measure, and it has been shown to save 95% of the cost of producing aluminum with primary ore. Therefore, it is not only more cost effective, but more environmentally friendly in the long run.

Furthermore, recycling aluminum chips allows for more effective industrial waste disposal. Rather than sending thousands of chips to the landfill, it provides companies a means to collect, clean and remelt the chips into usable materials. This saves the company money while providing a means to dispose of the waste. In doing this, aluminum chips support a circular economy, where materials are not only continually reused, but also save resources to the environment by not being thrown in a landfill.

More economic benefits. Companies can recycling their aluminum chips to minimize material costs, generate income from recycled aluminum, or reinvest into their own production lines. This could greatly enhance profitability, especially for small and medium-sized enterprises. Recycling aluminum chips on a global scale promotes sustainable supply chains by decreasing the amount of raw material needed from imports.

That said, there are challenges to recycling aluminum chips as well. During the machining process, various cutting fluids, oils, and other contaminants are introduced. Before remelting chips, the contaminants must be removed through a cleaning and drying process. Also, chips are irregular in size. This makes them challenging to hand transport. To remedy this, specialized systems, like compaction and briquetting machines, are utilized to convert the chips into dense storage blocks for easier processing. With the challenges aluminum chips recycling presents, more companies are focusing their efforts on improving the process as technology advances.

Aluminum chip recycling also supports other social and environmental benefits beyond the industrial perspective. Industry recycling especially benefits from the promotion of sustainability and the lowering of surrounding carbon footprints. Industries are able to adopt more environmentally friendly practices by viewing aluminum chips as a resource over waste. In addition, recycling aluminum chips provides economic benefits by creating collection, processing, and remelting jobs.

Aluminum chips are small, but their value is great. The negative stigma surrounding aluminum waste is gone, as industries now have sellable waste. The environmental sustainability of industries and the resilience of the chip waste handlers are mutually advanced as the value of industrial aluminum waste is unlocked. The formerly viewed waste aluminum chips have now become a hallmark recycled material of modern manufacturing. As modern manufacturing practices solidify, waste aluminum chips will become the hallmark of sustainability and modern recycling industrial efficiency practices.
