DETROIT - Three times he went to the playoffs with Pittsburgh, once with Florida when he won the World Series and this is the fourth time to the postseason managing the Tigers. Jim Leyland, in his eighth playoffs, has never had a starting rotation he trusts as much as the grouping of Max Scherzer, Justin Verlander, Anibal Sanchez and Doug Fister. "We had a very good rotation in Florida in 97 when we were fortunate enough to win the World Series but it wasnt as good as this one," said Leyland. "This is the best that Ive had. Im not talking about other teams, other organizations, but for me, yes, its the best postseason starting rotation Ive ever had." It could be that Leyland recalls fondly the guys he had on that Marlins team. That starting staff, which prominently featured the likes of Kevin Brown, Alex Fernandez, Al Leiter, Tony Saunders and the emergence of then-rookie Livan Hernandez, pitched to a 3.76 ERA for the regular season as the Marlins won 92 games and the National League wild card. In the postseason, however, Florida didnt win the World Series on the strength of its rotation. The group combined to allow 56 earned runs over 93 1/3 innings for a 5.40 ERA. What that rotation was able to do was work deep into games despite giving up runs. Brown and Hernandez each had a complete game in the NLCS against the Braves and on nine occasions in the playoffs Leylands starter pitched at least six innings. Compare the numbers of Leylands 1997 playoff rotation to those of his 2013 Tigers and its an understatement to suggest his staff is the best hes had. Detroits starters have allowed 13 earned runs in 59 2/3 innings over nine playoff games so far. Thats a 1.96 ERA. Only Sanchez, in Game 3 of the ALDS against Oakland, has failed to pitch at least six innings. In the ALCS against Boston alone, Tigers pitchers have struck out 53 Red Sox hitters, allowing three runs on 14 hits. Yet the series is tied, 2-2. Blame the Tigers bullpen, or credit David Ortiz depending on your perspective, for Bostons Game 2 comeback and offer a tip of the cap to John Lackey for working pitch for pitch with Verlander in Game 3. The Tigers rotation is on a potentially historic playoff pace and it still may not be enough to vault the club into its second consecutive World Series and third in eight years. "Just how things go this time of year," said Scherzer. "This is postseason. This is what happens when the two best teams face each other. Youre going to face a battle. Series is going to be tied." Sanchez and the Red Sox Jon Lester are set to square off in Game 5. There is no mathematical must-win for either team but the starting pitching, for what its been worth, leans in favour of the Tigers. Lose Game 5 and the Red Sox, despite being home, face the prospect of having to beat Scherzer and Verlander in back to back games on Saturday and Sunday. http://www.baratassuperstar.com/adidas-superstar-i...verde.h tml . Scott Kazmir allowed four hits in seven shutout innings, Michael Brantley hit a two-run homer in a three-run first inning and the Indians maintained their hold on an AL wild-card spot with a 4-1 win over the Houston Astros on Saturday night.ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The Tampa Bay Rays rode the momentum of a marathon victory to another big win. Desmond Jennings drove in four runs, Alex Cobb took a three-hit shutout into the ninth inning, and the Rays beat the Baltimore Orioles 5-1 on Saturday in a matchup of exhausted teams to maintain their lead in the AL wild-card race. "Weve got to keep things going," Jennings said. "Theres no relaxing or anything like that. Keep finding ways to win games." The first pitch came 10 hours, 56 minutes after the Rays 5-4, 18-inning win over Baltimore that ended at 2:05 a.m., a game that stretched on for 6:54 -- a record time for both teams. Saturdays game, by comparison, seemed to breeze by in 2:51. "You cant put into words how appreciative you are when youre on the mound and these guys after an 18-inning game when youre in bed sleeping while theyre putting together a win, and they come out with the same intensity for you the next day," Cobb said. "Its amazing." Cobb, in a common practice, left the ballpark early Friday night and went to bed 2 1/2 hours before the game ended. Tampa Bay (85-69) and Cleveland (85-70) hold the two AL wild-card positions, with Texas (84-70) a half-game back. The New York Yankees (82-73) overtook Baltimore, which is tied with Kansas City at 81-73 and trails by 3 1/2 games. Cobb didnt allow a hit until Steve Clevenger lined a single to right with two outs in the fifth. The Orioles had only two hits over the final 11 innings on Friday. "I think it was more Cobb than anything," Baltimore manager Buck Showalter said. "Hes got command of that changeup, to both left and right-handed hiitters.dddddddddddd. Hes impressive." Chris Davis tripled with one out in the ninth off Cobb, a fly ball David DeJesus struggled to locate in left. Adam Jones followed with an RBI single that chased Cobb, who struck out 12 and walked two. Closer Fernando Rodney completed the five-hitter. Miguel Gonzalez (10-8) gave up three runs, two hits and five walks in six innings. The right-hander had been 2-0 with an 0.92 ERA in his previous three starts at Tropicana Field. Tampa Bay went ahead in the fifth when Jose Molina and Yunel Escobar walked. One out later, Jennings hit his career-high 14th homer. Jennings added an RBI triple in the seventh and scored on Ben Zobrists single off Francisco Rodriguez. Eleven players who went the distance on Friday came back to start on Saturday: Baltimores Davis, Jones, Nick Markakis, Manny Machado, J.J. Hardy and Danny Valencia, and Tampa Bays Zobrist, Escobar, David DeJesus, Wil Myers and Evan Longoria. Baltimores Matt Wieters, who caught all 18 innings, was rested. "I was worried with the guys that went all the way, and they did fine," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. Showalter agreed. "Everybody was engaged and ready to play today," Showalter said. "No excuses." Someone jokingly wrote "Early hitting 7 a.m." on the message board in Tampa Bays clubhouse Saturday morning. NOTES: Baltimore recalled LHPs Mike Belfiore and Zach Britton from Triple-A Norfolk. ... Tampa Bay recalled LHP Jeff Beliveau from Triple-A Durham. ... Myers went 0 for 8 on Friday and became the first Tampa Bay player to go hitless in eight or more at-bats in a game. The rookie went 0 for 4 Saturday. Cheap China Jerseys Cheap NFL Jerseys Cheap NFL Jerseys China Cheap Jerseys From China China NFL Jerseys Cheap Jerseys Cheap Jerseys China ' ' '
