ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The Tampa Bay Rays rode the momentum of a marathon victory to another big win. Desmond Jennings drove in four runs, Alex Cobb took a three-hit shutout into the ninth inning, and the Rays beat the Baltimore Orioles 5-1 on Saturday in a matchup of exhausted teams to maintain their lead in the AL wild-card race. "Weve got to keep things going," Jennings said. "Theres no relaxing or anything like that. Keep finding ways to win games." The first pitch came 10 hours, 56 minutes after the Rays 5-4, 18-inning win over Baltimore that ended at 2:05 a.m., a game that stretched on for 6:54 -- a record time for both teams. Saturdays game, by comparison, seemed to breeze by in 2:51. "You cant put into words how appreciative you are when youre on the mound and these guys after an 18-inning game when youre in bed sleeping while theyre putting together a win, and they come out with the same intensity for you the next day," Cobb said. "Its amazing." Cobb, in a common practice, left the ballpark early Friday night and went to bed 2 1/2 hours before the game ended. Tampa Bay (85-69) and Cleveland (85-70) hold the two AL wild-card positions, with Texas (84-70) a half-game back. The New York Yankees (82-73) overtook Baltimore, which is tied with Kansas City at 81-73 and trails by 3 1/2 games. Cobb didnt allow a hit until Steve Clevenger lined a single to right with two outs in the fifth. The Orioles had only two hits over the final 11 innings on Friday. "I think it was more Cobb than anything," Baltimore manager Buck Showalter said. "Hes got command of that changeup, to both left and right-handed hitters. Hes impressive." Chris Davis tripled with one out in the ninth off Cobb, a fly ball David DeJesus struggled to locate in left. Adam Jones followed with an RBI single that chased Cobb, who struck out 12 and walked two. Closer Fernando Rodney completed the five-hitter. Miguel Gonzalez (10-8) gave up three runs, two hits and five walks in six innings. The right-hander had been 2-0 with an 0.92 ERA in his previous three starts at Tropicana Field. Tampa Bay went ahead in the fifth when Jose Molina and Yunel Escobar walked. One out later, Jennings hit his career-high 14th homer. Jennings added an RBI triple in the seventh and scored on Ben Zobrists single off Francisco Rodriguez. Eleven players who went the distance on Friday came back to start on Saturday: Baltimores Davis, Jones, Nick Markakis, Manny Machado, J.J. Hardy and Danny Valencia, and Tampa Bays Zobrist, Escobar, David DeJesus, Wil Myers and Evan Longoria. Baltimores Matt Wieters, who caught all 18 innings, was rested. "I was worried with the guys that went all the way, and they did fine," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. Showalter agreed. "Everybody was engaged and ready to play today," Showalter said. "No excuses." Someone jokingly wrote "Early hitting 7 a.m." on the message board in Tampa Bays clubhouse Saturday morning. NOTES: Baltimore recalled LHPs Mike Belfiore and Zach Britton from Triple-A Norfolk. ... The Flyers recorded a 5-0 win in Ottawa on Nov. 12 and then earned a 5-2 home decision on Nov. 19. The Flyers have claimed three straight and four of the last five encounters with the Sens overall and Philly has won two in a row and three of its past four tests in Canadas capital city.(Sports Network) - The Tampa Bay Rays try to pad their lead atop the wild card standings on Thursday when they go after a series win in the finale of a four- game set with the Texas Rangers at Tropicana Field. That, though, may be easier said than done for the Rays, as they will go up against right-hander Yu Darvish, who is 12-9 on the year with a 2.79 ERA, but leads the majors with 256 strikeouts. Darvish gave up just one run and struck out 10 on Saturday against Oakland, but lost his fourth straight start, as the Rangers failed to score a run for him for the second straight time. "There is only so much you can do as an individual player," said Darvish, who is coming off a pair of 1-0 defeats. "I just have to go out there and throw my pitches and pitch my game and do what I can to help the team." Tampa, however, will throw an equally impressive hurler of its own in lefty Matt Moore, who is 15-3 with a 3.11 ERA. Moore has been incredible in three starts since returning from the disabled list, pitching to a 0.61 ERA in those outings. Of course, as a 22-year-old back in the 2011 ALDS Moore stymied Texas lineup over seven scoreless innings. He didnt allow a run against the Rangers over 5 1/3 innings back on April 10 either, but walked six batters. Tampa needed extra innings to gain sole possession of first place in the wild card chase on Wednesday, as Desmond Jennings 12th-inning single gave the Rays a 4-3 win. The Rays had tied the game an inning earlier after another mistake allowed the Rangers to take a 3-2 lead in the top of 11th.dddddddddddd Elvis Andrus never stepped off the gas as he scored from first base on Adrian Beltres two-out single to the gap in right-center field. Tampa Bay rookie right fielder Wil Myers appeared to be caught off guard, not thinking Andrus would attempt to score, and leisurely lobbed the ball to the cutoff man. "I should have been more aware of the situation and who was running," Myers said. "I should have charged the ball with more aggressiveness. Its one of those things you learn from and dont let happen again." Myers was taken off the hook as the Rays rallied in the home 11th. Texas closer Joe Nathan retired the first two batters before walking Matt Joyce. Pinch-runner Freddy Guzman then stole second and scored on David DeJesus single up the middle. After Brandon Gomes (2-1) struck out Ian Kinsler with runners on second and third in the top of the 12th, Jose Lobaton greeted Joseph Ortiz (2-2) with a base hit. After a sacrifice bunt by Yunel Escobar, pinch-runner Sam Fuld scored on Jennings liner to right. "We still have 11 games left, and right now, were still in the postseason," said Nathan about the tough loss. "We still have plenty of baseball to go." The Rangers, who have lost eight of nine overall, remained a half-game ahead of Cleveland for the second wild card spot. Texas has split its six matchups with the Rays this season.
