Dmitry Orlov scoring on Sergei Bobrovsky is a popular clip at a bar in their hometown in southwestern Siberia.
âThey always show my goal to him Joseph Noteboom Jersey ,â Orlov said. âMy friends said that.â
Orlov and Bobrovsky are good friends going back to their time growing up together and have played together on the Russian national team with Alex Ovechkin, Evgeny Kuznetsov and Artemi Panarin. Theyâre split on opposite sides of a first-round series between Ovechkin, Kuznetsov and Orlovâs Washington Capitals and Bobrovsky and Panarinâs Columbus Blue Jackets. Game 1 is Thursday night in Washington.
âTheyâre good players, obviously, and we need to work (against) them,â Orlov said. âPanarin have good skill so we need to not give him a lot of space and Bob we need to put more shots, more traffic on him. If we win, it will be nice.â
Perhaps not since the Detroit Red Wingsâ Russian Five has a Stanley Cup playoff series had so many prominent players from Russia, with all eyes on those them as potential X-factors. It starts with Bobrovsky, a two-time Vezina Trophy-winning goaltender who aims to rebound from starting his NHL playoff career 3-10 with a 3.63 goals-against average and .887 save percentage.
âHeâs going to rise to the occasion,â Blue Jackets captain Nick Foligno said. âHe has every time heâs been challenged. If I had to pick anybody in the league to go into the playoffs with it would be him, and I think heâs pretty confident about the team in front of him.â
The team in front of Bobrovsky is led by Panarin Mark Barron Jersey , whose 82 points are 25 more than the second-closest Columbus player.
âThe Blue Jackets have added a guy like Panarin, I think heâs a little bit of that difference make, just like we have some difference makers,â Washington coach Barry Trotz said. âThey can do some things that they maybe didnât have in the past. Heâs an exceptional player. Weâve got some exceptional players. Sometimes in those tight series, those exceptional players can be the difference.â
Ovechkin has made a difference all year, leading the NHL with 49 goals and scoring 19.1 percent of the Capitalsâ total over the course of the 82-game regular season. Kuznetsov caught fire late, recording 11 goals and 17 assists in the final 18 games of the regular season.
âI would say he is mature, understands the game,â Ovechkin said of Kuznetsov. âEverybody knew he would be a very good, solid player, a talent, and you can see how he plays right now.â
Some things to watch when Columbus and Washington meet in the playoffs for the first time:
GRUBAUER HOUR
Backup Philipp Grubauer got the nod to start Game 1 for the Capitals over 2016 Vezina winner and longtime No. 1 goaltender Braden Holtby. The 26-year-old German started a playoff game in place of Holtby in 2015 because of an illness Charles Haley Jersey , but he earned the starting job this time around by closing out the season 7-3-0 with a 2.32 goals-against average and .925 save percentage. Holtby went into a slump in February and March, opening the door for Grubauer to seize the opportunity. But Trotz only named Grubauer his starter for Game 1 and said heâll take the decision game by game.
TORTORELLA TIME
Blue Jackets coach John Tortorella will face the Capitals in a playoff series for the sixth time after going 3-2 with the Tampa Bay Lightning and New York Rangers. Tortorella has beaten â and lost to â Washington this time of year with less-talented teams than he has right now, particularly after the addition of winger Thomas Vanek and defenseman Ian Cole at the trade deadline made Columbus a high-scoring machine.
âI think weâre playing some of our best hockey, both as a group and certainly the individuals,â Tortorella said. âI think with them and the additions at the deadline, I think our group feels really good about itself.â
ACTIVE D
Washingtonâs John Carlson led all NHL defenseman with 68 points in the regular season and yet still might not be the best on the blue line in this series. Columbus has Norris Trophy dark horse Seth Jones, who along with Zack Werenski give the Blue Jackets some serious offense.
SPECIAL TEAMS
One area the Capitals have a huge advantage is on the power play and penalty kill, where theyâre ranked seventh and 15th in the league. The Blue Jackets are 15th on the power play and 26th on the penalty kill. Since the trade deadline, though, Columbus has scored on 25 percent of its power plays.

Braden Holtby spun around and saw the puck on the goal line. Maybe it was in. Maybe it wasnât.
But after mounting another two-goal lead and this time building on it instead of blowing it Matt Prater Jersey , the Washington Capitals made sure it wasnât close enough for one questionable call either way to make a difference. With fresh memories of coughing up that same lead in Game 1, this time they took it to the Pittsburgh Penguins and emerged with a 4-1 victory in Game 2 to tie the second-round series.
âYou can see what happen last game when we get the lead 2-0 and they come back and win the game,â said Alex Ovechkin, who scored his seventh goal of the playoffs. âTheyâre experienced team, theyâre not going to give up and theyâre not gonna give easy play for us. We have to earn it. Today I think we play a solid game, everybody was in and we get the result.â
It was a result that came with controversy and a potentially significant aftermath as the two-time defending Stanley Cup champion-Penguins came out on the wrong side of a coachâs challenge, the NHLâs video review on what would have been their second goal and lost defenseman Brian Dumoulin after a hit to the head by Tom Wilson.
Holtby stopped 32 of the 33 shots he faced to frustrate the Penguins, robbing captain Sidney Crosby and linemate Jake Guentzel with sliding pad saves to continue his strong play in the postseason.
The Penguins thought he shouldâve allowed one more goal to Patric Hornqvist in the third period. No definitive replays showing the puck over the goal line and Wilsonâs hit that injured Dumoulin left them steaming but also kicking themselves for starting slow and falling behind again.
âThey won the game in the first period,â Hornqvist said. âI donât think we played our best game. ⦠They were all over us.â
After blowing three two-goal leads through the first seven games of the playoffs, Washington at least temporarily solved that problem. Ovechkin beat Matt Murray 1:26 in, Jakub Vrana scored on the power play later in the first period and, unlike Game 1 Donte Jackson Jersey , the Capitals made it 3-0 when Brett Connolly scored on a breakaway early in the second.
âGame 1 it was tough, we played a really good game I think and they just kind of found a way to get some breaks and score some timely goals,â Connolly said. âWe learned from that this time around.â
The Capitals are learning some about Murray, having now scored all five of their goals against him in this series glove side. He made 18 of his 28 saves in the first period and had to in order to keep Washington from turning this into a blowout.
Murray was not the least bit happy when the league ruled Connollyâs push on him moments before Vranaâs goal was not enough to keep him from being able to make the save.
âPretty disappointed,â Murray said. âAs a goalie you just want to be able to do your job and when something like that happens and you canât do it, you just want to see the rule upheld.â
Pittsburgh had an even bigger reason to be angry when Wilson wasnât penalized for checking Dumoulin in the head with his left shoulder in the second. Dumoulin never returned, could potentially miss Game 3 on Tuesday and Wilson is in danger of being suspended.
âHe made contact with his head,â Crosby said. âGiven his history and things like that, Iâm sure the league will take a good look at it.â
Wilson watched multiple replays and came away believing there was nothing else he could do on the play because Dumoulin stopped and braced for a hit from Ovechkin at the last second. Penguins coach Mike Sullivan said he had an opinion of the hit but declined to share it.
Wilson was already ready to move on.
âItâs a bit of an unfortunate play that he got hurt,â he said. âWeâll see what happens and weâll keep moving forward here. Thereâs more important things going on. Weâve got a team in here thatâs pretty good and confident and weâve got to go to Pittsburgh and get a game.â
NOTES: The Capitals have now killed 22 consecutive penalties dating to Game 2 of their first-round series against Columbus. ⦠Kris Letang scored Pittsburghâs only goal on a floater from the point in the second period. ⦠The Penguins were without star center Evgeni Malkin for the third consecutive game because of an apparent leg injury. Sullivan said Malkin could return for Game 3. ⦠Ovechkin tied Crosby and Guentzel for the playoff lead in goals. ⦠The Penguinsâ streak of road playoff victories ended at six.
