MANCHESTER, England -- Manchester United and West Ham paid a big price for fielding heavily weakened teams in the FA Cup when they were knocked out in the third round on Sunday, while Chelsea and Liverpool advanced relatively comfortably. Swansea capitalized on the 80th-minute sending-off of substitute Fabio Da Silva by scoring in the last minute through Wilfried Bony in a 2-1 win at United, the latest setback for David Moyes in his turbulent first season with the English champions. United has lost four of its last six games at Old Trafford in all competitions and failed to reach the fourth round for only the second time in 30 years. "We had another big game in 48 hours time so we have to keep that in mind (but) no excuse," said Moyes, referring to the first leg of a League Cup semifinal against Sunderland on Tuesday. "We had a strong team out. Nearly every player out there was an international." Like United, West Ham used a lineup full of reserves ahead of its League Cup semifinal against Manchester City on Wednesday, and the gamble backfired. The injury-hit Premier League struggler was crushed 5-0 at second-tier Nottingham Forest in the third rounds biggest shock. "We had a huge amount of problems in terms of the available members of the squad so Ive got to keep them intact, thats a major priority," said West Ham manager Sam Allardyce, who was already under pressure with his team next to last in the league. "Many, many managers have changed the team in all divisions, but my changes had to be severe. I didnt want it to be but it had to be." Chelsea and Liverpool played stronger lineups -- and it showed. Second-half goals by John Obi Mikel and Oscar earned Chelsea a 2-0 victory at Derby, while Liverpool avenged last seasons surprise defeat to third-tier Oldham in this competition by winning 2-0 at Anfield thanks to Iago Aspas first goal for the club and an own goal by James Tarkowski. That game also saw Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers go up against his own son, Anton, who plays for Oldham and came on as a second-half substitute. "Ive seen Antons life from when he was a young footballer and to see him run out there was a bit surreal really," Rodgers said. Sunderland beat third-tier Carlisle 3-1 in the other third-round match featuring a Premier League team. The fear factor about visiting Old Trafford has disappeared since Alex Ferguson left United last summer and Swansea was the latest team to take advantage, recording its first win at the home of the champions. "Lets not kid ourselves, its a really bad result," United midfielder Darren Fletcher said. The Welsh side was helped by Moyes picking a shadow team that was missing injured strikers Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie, as well as senior players Nemanja Vidic, Patrice Evra and Michael Carrick. And Wayne Routledge put Swansea ahead in the 12th minute, running onto Alejandro Pozuelos through ball and lobbing goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard. Javier Hernandez turned in Alexander Buttners cross four minutes later for the equalizer, and Moyes said he was disappointed not to see his team kick on from then. Fabio was given a straight red card for a studs-first lunge at Jose Canas, just four minutes after coming on as a substitute, and Bony made United pay by rising to head in Routledges left-wing cross to cap an impressive performance. "In my world, they are still a big team and for us to beat them, we still have to do a very good performance," Swansea manager Michael Laudrup said. Allardyce fielded an unrecognizable starting XI featuring a host of youth-team players at The City Ground and they collapsed in the second half. Djamel Abdouns goal gave Forest a 1-0 lead at halftime before Jamie Paterson scored a hat trick and Andy Reid completed the humiliation with the fifth in injury time. West Hams lineup further highlights the FA Cups increasing lack of appeal in the eyes of many top clubs nowadays but Allardyce made no apologies and knows there may be repercussions. "There might be, who knows?" Allardyce said. "Im not saying it wont happen unless I start to get results. I have got to get results, I know that." The depth of Chelseas squad shone through as Mikel headed home Willians free kick in the 66th minute for only his fourth goal for the club in 300 appearances, before Brazil playmaker Oscar struck a fierce shot in at the near post five minutes later. Chelsea will host Stoke in the fourth round while Liverpool must travel to Bournemouth or Burton. Marc-Andre Ter Stegen Camiseta . Victor Moses converted a 20th-minute penalty after an Ethiopian handball, and Victor Obinna made certain of Nigerias place in Brazil with his powerful free kick in the 82nd at UJ Esuene Stadium.ATLANTA -- Kris Medlen is putting together another second-half run that is helping the Atlanta Braves move closer to the NL East title. Medlen allowed four hits over 7 1-3 scoreless innings to win his fourth straight start, leading the Braves to a 2-1 win over the San Diego Padres on Saturday night. The first-place Braves increased their lead over second-place Washington to 11 games. Any combination of four Braves wins or Nationals losses will give Atlanta its first division title since 2005. Medlen (14-12) has enjoyed a strong resurgence after a slow start. He went 1-6 over the first two months of the season but is 8-2 in his last 10 games. In 2012, Medlen moved into the rotation on July 31 and then was 9-0 with a 0.97 ERA in 12 starts. "Whether Im a second-half guy or whatever it is, I just feel like Ive clicked," Medlen said. The Braves led 2-0 before Chase Headley hit a ninth-inning homer off closer Craig Kimbrel, who then pitched around a two-out walk to Ronny Cedeno for his career-best 47th save -- the most in the majors. Freddie Freeman had three hits, including a sixth-inning homer off Robbie Erlin (2-3), to help the Braves earn their first win of the season over the Padres. San Diego won the first four games of the season series. Medlens surge has been especially important after staff leader Tim Hudson broke his right ankle on July 25 and was lost for the season. Medlen, Mike Minor and Julio Teheran have taken over atop the rotation. Is Medlen, the staff leader in wins, the Braves emerging ace? "I think there are a lot of guys you could say that about," manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "I think his last four starts have been really, really good. Maybe more than that." Medlen looked like an ace to Padres manager Bud Black. "Hes their guy," Black said. "Hes won 14 games. Obviously, theyre on their way to the playoffs. I suspect that hell be their first-game pitcher." Medlen, who had five strikeouts and two walks, was removed after allowing a bloop single to Will Venable with one out in the eighth. David Carpenter recorded the final two outs of the inning. Kimbrel overcaame Headleys leadoff homer in the ninth.dddddddddddd After striking out Kyle Blanks and Tommy Medica, Kimbrel walked Cedeno. After pinch-runner Reymond Fuentes stole second base, Nick Hundley grounded out to end the game. "We were one base hit from tying that game," Black said. "We were right there with them." Erlin allowed two runs on eight hits and one walk in six innings. The Braves took a 1-0 lead in the fourth when Justin Upton led off with a single and scored on a two-out single to left field by Chris Johnson, who had two hits. The Braves were denied a chance to extend their lead in the fifth when Elliot Johnson hit a two-out single and stole second. Upton singled to right field and Johnson, trying to score from second, was thrown out on right fielder Chris Denorfias one-hop throw to the plate. The Braves left the bases loaded in the seventh. Right-hander Dale Thayer, the Padres third pitcher of the inning, struck out Evan Gattis to end the threat after Brad Boxberger and Tommy Layne combined to walk three batters. San Diegos problems with walks continued in the eighth. With two outs, Andrelton Simmons doubled off Brad Brach, who then walked B.J. Upton and pinch-hitter Joey Terdoslavich. Brach struck out Elliot Johnson to end the inning. There was a brief delay in the fifth inning when Medlen fouled a ball that hit home plate umpire Tom Hallion under his mask. The ball skimmed off catcher Nick Hundleys helmet before hitting Hallion, who remained in the game after being checked by Braves assistant trainer Jim Lovell. Venable made a diving catch of Elliot Johnsons sinking liner in left-centre in the first inning. NOTES: Gonzalez said Braves OF Jason Heyward, who took batting practice for the second straight day, could be sent to the Braves Instructional League in Florida next week. Heywards right jaw was fractured when hit by a pitch from the Mets Jonathon Niese on Aug. 21. ... B.J. Upton drew three walks. ... Braves RHP Brandon Beachy (inflammation right elbow) will begin light throwing on Monday or Tuesday. ... Teheran will try for his 13th win against Padres RHP Burch Smith on Sunday.
