TAMPA, Fla. -- Robert Griffin III tweeted the good news. Its simply not official yet. The Washington quarterback was cleared Thursday by his surgeon to be under centre when the regular season opens for the Redskins on Sept. 9. However, coach Mike Shanahan hedged after a preseason-ending 30-12 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. "Theres a couple of concerns that he has," Shanahan said to reporters. "Ill talk to Robert over the weekend, and Ill let you guys know on Monday." The Redskins did not make Griffin available to answers questions. His teammates, however, expect the 2012 Offensive Rookie of the Year to start against Philadelphia. "Thats just the type of player Robert is, just his will and determination to be back on that field. Im not surprised, and Im looking forward to him coming out and having a good game," running back Alfred Morris said. Fourth-stringer Pat White threw for 181 yards, set up a touchdown with a 66-yard completion to Dezmon Briscoe, and also ran for a TD to help the Redskins finish the preseason 4-0 for the first time in 28 years. Shanahan rested most of his starters, including Griffin, who worked out at Raymond James Stadium for about 30 minutes before walking off the field with Dr. James Andrews. Andrews was in town to examine the quarterbacks surgically repaired right knee. Griffin, whos been practicing without any reported setbacks, participated in the coin toss as a Redskins captain and watched the game from the sideline. When it ended, he tweeted: "Operation Patience complete: cleared." "It definitely aids us when we have him coming back with us, but even if he wasnt able to be back Week 1, we have Kirk Cousins, we have Rex (Grossman) and we have Pat (White)," Morris said. "Those guys are able to make plays as well. But it definitely helps us knowing our starting quarterback is going to be back." Tampa Bay quarterback Josh Freeman also sat out the finale, as did Bucs cornerback Darrelle Revis, whos recovering from knee surgery that sidelined him most of last season with the New York Jets. With backup Kirk Cousins out with a sprained right foot, White played the entire game for the Redskins. Safety Brandon Meriweather started and played the opening half for Washington, seeing his first game action since November, when he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during the only game he played. The Redskins are counting on him to shore up a weakness in their secondary. "He was fine," Shanahan said. "I thought he played well, and its nice to get him back in the lineup." Meriweather wasnt credited with any tackles, but said "it felt good to run around, to actually hit somebody besides my own teammates. ... It felt good just to be out there, period." Evan Royster rushed for 59 yards and a touchdown in his bid to win a job as a backup running back. Another young running back vying to make the roster, rookie Chris Thompson, scored on a 69-yard punt return. Tampa Bay (1-3) finished a mostly unimpressive preseason with another sloppy performance. With a healthy Freeman looking ahead to the Bucs season opener against the Jets, third-round draft pick Mike Glennon played like a rookie in completing 7 of 16 passes for 63 yards and one interception. He also lost a fumble when the ball appeared to just slip out of his hand before his arm began moving forward to throw. "Tonight is the first time he looked like a rookie. He struggled a little bit," Tampa Bay coach Greg Schiano said. "Thats not just him, obviously, but Im sure when he watches this hell say he wishes he had done this and done that." Linebacker Najee Goode scored Tampa Bays only touchdown, returning a second-quarter interception 37 yards. Derek Dimke missed the extra point, hitting the right upright -- one of several sloppy moments for the Bucs, who turned the ball over twice while falling behind 27-6 at the half. Dan Orlovsky replaced Glennon late in the third quarter and led a field goal drive for Tampa Bay, which sputtered offensively throughout the preseason. In three exhibitions, Freeman was 12 of 26 for 101 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions. He was sacked nine times. Hockey Canada announced today that the 38-year-old Tampa Bay forward will replace injured Lightning teammate Steven Stamkos on Canadas mens hockey team at the Sochi Olympics. "I heard from Stammer that he wasnt going to go, so I knew it was a possibility," St. Louis told reporters in Tampa on Thursday. "So I guess I was prepared for it." St. Louis said he felt bad for Stamkos, who tried hard to come back from a broken right tibia he suffered in a Nov. 11 NHL game before being ruled out of Olympic competition by the Lightnings medical staff on Wednesday. "I think weve got to understand how hard hes tried and worked to put himself in the position hes in and give himself a chance," St. Louis said. "Obviously hes disappointed and Im disappointed for him. Stammers a true professional and hes done everything he can this past month to get back to the lightning first and hopefully to Team Canada." St. Louis was considered one of Canadas most surprising snubs when Canadas team was first announced, along with Philadelphia forward Claude Giroux and Pittsburgh forward James Neal. The Laval, Que., native led the league in points in the 2012-13 shortened season with 17 goals and 43 assists in 48 games. He is having another strong campaign in 2013-14 with 54 points (25 goals, 29 assists) in 56 games, good for 11th in the league. "I dont see this as Marty replacing me, I see it as Marty deserving a spot on this team and going over and hopefully bringing back a gold medal," said Stamkos in the same news conference. St. Louis has won two World Championsship silver medals for Canada over his career.dddddddddddd He played in the 2006 Turin Olympics, scoring two goals and an assist in Canadas disappointing seventh-place finish. St. Louis went on a 10-game point streak (eight goals, six assists) for the Lightning after first being left off Canadas team, announced on Jan. 7. He said the snub had nothing to do with his increased production, but his play of late might have given him the edge over Giroux and Neal. "I dont think its motivation. Ive been motivated the past four years ... the past 10 years. If youre not motivated, youre not even considered for these things. His speed could be a benefit to Canada, which has struggled in the Olympics when playing on the larger international ice surface. Canada won gold in Salt Lake City in 2002 and in Vancouver in 2010 playing in NHL-style arenas, but was left off the podium in Nagano, Japan in 1998 and Turin, Italy in 2006. "Obviously its a bigger ice surface. It think my quickness, my speed ... thats what Im going to rely on," St. Louis said. "Its a different game, but I think whatever game plan we come up with, its going to be well thought-out." Stamkos is confident that his teammate can fill any position on Team Canada. "Hes going to go over there and play whatever role possible. I personally think hes going to play a big role," said Stamkos. "The character that he has, the way hes played in big-game situations in the past. I mean, hes won individual awards, hes won the team championships, hes been in those situations. "Its not like its a young guy thats never been in these situations before filling in for someone. This is a guy who can step in and play any role asked."
