ST. JOHNS, N.L. -- One night after being beaten by the lowly Hamilton Bulldogs, the St. Johns IceCaps bounced back in a big way. Spencer Machacek scored three goals as the IceCaps hammered the Bulldogs 6-0 on Wednesday night in American Hockey League action. IceCaps coach Keith McCambridge was clearly frustrated after Tuesdays 4-2 loss to Hamilton, but was very pleased with Wednesdays response. "We came out and played the way we set the bar to play all season long," he said. "Overall, we had everybody playing their A game tonight. The biggest thing was the work ethic, the compete, the checking was there, everything was in place that gives you a chance to win a game tonight." McCambridge said it was crucial for the IceCaps to avoid consecutive poor showings as the playoffs draw near. "Frustrating when you see what happened last night. Is that going to happen during the course of the season? Yes. The biggest thing is you want to make sure that you dont let those run in consecutive games," he said. "That was a really good bounce-back game for that team in the dressing room." Zach Redmond, Jason Gregoire and Aaron Gagnon also scored for the IceCaps (38-16-7). St. Johns captain Jason Jaffray had three assists. St. Johns goaltender Ed Pasquale had a quiet night in his shutout, making only 12 saves. The Bulldogs goaltenders both had a ton of work, with starter Nathan Lawson making 25 saves, and Robert Mayer stopping 20 shots in relief. The IceCaps opened the scoring when Machacek scored at 15:18 of the first period. Machacek pulled a spin move behind Hamiltons net before backhanding the puck towards Lawson, who misplayed the shot and the puck trickled into the net. "When (Machacek) is on top of his game, when hes playing in straight lines, hes a really effective player," McCambridge said. "It was good to see him get on the board tonight, good to see him play the way Spencer Machacek should play." Redmond scored at 17:11 when he launched a slap-shot through a screen. The IceCaps outshot the Bulldogs (27-28-7) 17-4 in the first period, which was indicative of how the rest of the game would go. St. Johns took the game by the throat in the second period, with Machacek completing his hat trick to put St. Johns up 4-0. The fourth goal of the game ended Lawsons evening. Gagnon made it 5-0 at 15:25 of the second period. Jaffray and Jason King exchanged slick passes before finding Gagnon open on the far post for the easy tap-in. Gregoire added the only third period goal when a Kevin Clark shot bounced off Gregoires chest as he was falling. "All four lines were going tonight for sure," Machacek said. "Sometimes the bounces are going your way, and tonight I thought we got some bounces. But we worked hard for them as well, and we definitely worked hard for the full 60 minutes." The IceCaps went 2-for-6 on the power play while Bulldogs 0-for-1. St. Johns faces off against the Manchester Monarchs Saturday and Sunday at Mile One Centre. In addition to the game being aired in its entirety on CTV Two Vancouver Island and TSN.ca, TSN2 will also have coverage of Whitecaps FC immediately following NASCAR Sprint Cup Series: Toyota Owners 400. Adam Jones Authentic Jersey . Justin Upton homered and scored the tiebreaking run on Chris Johnsons eighth-inning single, and the Atlanta Braves beat the St. Louis Cardinals 2-1 on Tuesday night to end their seven-game skid. Manny Machado Jersey . Manager John Gibbons wasnt taking the bait on Friday afternoon following his clubs 3-1 defeat at the hands of the Red Sox. "When we put the team together, well announce it at the end," said Gibbons. "Nice try, though." Pressed further, Gibbons was only slightly more willing to share what everyone believes hes thinking about his 23-year-old right-hander.It is the return of the UFC to Vancouver. We had Tom Wright on the “Weigh In” Radio show on TSN Radio 1290 to talk with us about Canada and the role we play in MMA. Its exciting to think that Canada is a leader in the sport. Thats the reason weve got Jones vs Gustafsson in Toronto. Vancouver will be the battle ground for a title fight, and for a few guys trying to keep their jobs in the UFC. That means fans should be treated to some solid action in the cage. Outside the cage, this article has me @fitcityjordan going toe to toe with @WebSodaGirl Gabby McAlpine. Wed love for you to chime in on social media. #TeamJC or #TeamGabzilla. Let us know and let @TSN_Sports know you love MMA. Demetrious Johnson (19-2-1) vs Ali Bagautinov (13-2-0) JC: Demetrious Johnson is just really good at MMA. He is all around with his ability to wrestle and strike. Hes the champ right now, and its because he is a talent. Watch him out strike, out point, and out game plan Bagautinov. Johnson has earned stoppages in his last two fights, and in my opinion those two athletes were more of a standout challenge than Bagautinov. The challenger is still dangerous, but I think Johnson is on another level. Gabzilla: Demetrious Johnson will win. I like him, and hes been looking really good his whole career. So its a simple choice. Johnson stays champ. Rory MacDonald (16-2-0) vs Tyron Woodley (13-2-0) JC: Im pretty sure this one is going to be a barn burner. Remember the old Rory MacDonald? The one who got all the hype, the one who was supposed to challenge the likes of GSP for talent? Well, if he doesnt show up, Woodley will run him over. Anything less than the best MacDonald we have ever seen cant handle Tyron Woodleys athleticism. Honestly, I dont think even a top notch MacDonald can. The Canadian is coming off four fights having gone to decision; Woodley has stopped his last two fights. I see Woodley pushing the pace and ending this one in the third. Gabzilla: Rory is always hungry, too hungry sometimes buut I dont think he will be able to handle the raw power of Woodley.dddddddddddd Woodley will ultimately be the winner here. Ryan Bader (16-4-0) vs Rafael Cavalcante (12-4-0) JC: Nothing says great fight like a highly skilled pair of strikers, with enough ground game to keep things interesting. As always, if Cavalcante can come in clean, I think he wins this one by being the higher skilled athlete. There is room on this card for a fight of the night, and I think this will be it. Im looking forward to these two athletes fighting for their jobs, or at least making their way up the rankings in the top 10. I personally think Cavalcante has the skill to make a push for top five, and it will start here with a KO of Bader. Gabzilla: Bader will win this one. I just love his intensity and I think he will win by strikes. His last fight was amazing and I think he wants to keep going with that streak Brendan Schaub (10-3-0) vs Andrei Arlovski (21-10-0) JC: I was at the match when Arlovski fought Fedor. The whole arena went silent watching Arlovski use his technical striking to control the best of the best. That is until he dropped his hands and jumped chin first at the best power puncher in the world. That pretty much sums up Arlovski. Amazing skill, coupled with the amazing ability to make a massive mistake that costs himself the fight. He hasnt looked sharp yet in his fights, but he hasnt looked bad either. All that negative and youd think Id say Schaub is going to get this. I dont think that will be the case. Arlovski will control the stand up early, Schaub will go for the take down. Once this is on the ground, I think the Russian Sambo specialist will surprise Schaub. Arlovski will get a submission to end the night. Gabzilla: Schaub should take this one. I think he will win by submission; he is out to prove himself as an elite grappler since his performance at Metamoris. Metamoris: Schaub vs Cyborg was a bad showing for Brendan, but since then Schuab has been out to prove the haters wrong. ' ' '
