You wont find the name "Gabrielle Douglas" on the AT&T American Cup results list. The 16-year-old gymnast was ineligible for a medal in the weekends gymnastics competition, as USA Gymnastics elected to enter her as an alternate. But that didnt stop the Virginia native from stealing the show. "Ive been watching Gabby grow up in the sport, and last year was really her break-out year in the American scene," said Canadas only Olympic medallist in gymnastics, Kyle Shewfelt. An analyst with CTV for the London 2012 Olympic Games, Shewfelt was on-hand in Madison Square Garden to watch Douglass coming-out party. He gave his take on the competition in a phone interview with CTVOlympics.ca on Monday. "She had a couple little mental blocks last year and her form wasnt super crisp, super clean," Shewfelt said, "but at the American Cup--something has happened since Worlds. She has this new star power." Competing against the reigning World champion and Douglass teammate on the American squad, Jordyn Wieber, Douglas showed no fear on the mats. She floored the field, posting the highest score of the day with 61.229 points. Wieber won gold, but scored just 61.032. "USA Gymnastics gave Gabby this opportunity as a test," said Shewfelt. "This was to see how she could walk into Madison Square Garden, competing against her American teammates -- two of the best in the world -- Alexandra Raisman and Jordyn Wieber, and to see if she could deliver. And she did. "This is a big pressure-cooker. There are TV cameras, its in Madison Square Garden, and thats a big venue. So it shows the character of the athletes. It shows their potential," he said. It also showed off an aspect of Douglass personality that Shewfelt thought he recognized. "She was very reminiscent of (Olympic gold medallist) Shawn Johnson," he said. "They have the same coach, Liang Chow. But the way that they move and that confidence that they have in competition, I really saw that starting to wear off on Gabby." Also competing this weekend were Canadians Victoria Moors and Jackson Payne. Both athletes are hopeful of being selected to Canadas Olympic gymnastics team later this year. Moors, the youngest gymnast to compete in Januarys Olympic test event at 15-years of age, hit a milestone of her own on Saturday. The Cambridge, Ont., native finished fourth in the all-around competition, posting strong numbers in the vault, the beam and, particularly, the floor events. Jackson Payne of Edmonton, Alta., finished seventh. "The Canadians were pretty last-minute additions to the line-up, and I really felt like they rose to the occasion," Shewfelt said. "For Victoria, the plan with her is probably to send her to as many high-profile meets as possible because shes got to earn a reputation ahead of the Olympic Games. "She has always been a pretty quiet and confident competitor. I think for her, its interesting because the dream is becoming true. Shes living it. And that takes a while for you to finally realize that. "What really boded well for Victoria here was, if you looked at her difficulty and execution score and final score on floor, it was high: 14.766. Thats a very high, international-standard routine. The best girls in the world are scoring 14.6 to 15. So shes putting herself right in that mix, and thats at an international meet. So that bodes really well for her in being selected for the (Canadian Olympic) team." As a member of the mens squad that also competed at the test event in January, Payne put up strong numbers in all six of his events in London, finishing 15th in the all-around competition. The mens team went home disappointed, however, failing by less than half a point to qualify a full team for the Olympics. As a result, Gymnastics Canada will need to select just one male representative to compete in London this summer. Payne received his invitation to Madison Square Garden mere days before the opening of the competition. He was unprepared, coming off a performance peak at the test event in January, but Shewfelt said there were still many positives in the 20-year-olds performance. "I noticed in New York that he has added a couple of extra difficulty elements to his pommel horse and to his high bar. He even tried something new on floor," Shewfelt said. "So thats really promising. Hes upgrading. Hes upgrading his routines and his skills and that means, in my opinion, that hes really trying to get that Olympic spot because the men just have one. And its going to be based on who can have the best shot for making a final. So hes upgrading his routines and thats very promising to see." The Canadians will reconvene for the Canadian Championships in Regina, Sask., in May, and then again at the Olympic Selection Camp in late June.
