WASHINGTON (AP) George McPhee will only get a ring if the Vegas Golden Knights win the Stanley Cup.Maybe he should get one if the Washington Capitals win.McPhee is responsible for acquiring 13 players on the current roster during his 17 years as general manager and also hired longtime friend Brian MacLellan Adidas Adam Clendening Jersey , who became his successor and built the rest of the team. From MacLellan to captain Alex Ovechkin, star center Nicklas Backstrom, goaltender Braden Holtby and management staffs on either side, this final in many ways is a validation of McPheeâs philosophy, knowledge and career.âItâs great to see him have success somewhere else,â said Capitals defenseman John Carlson, one of 12 McPhee draft picks facing him in the final. âI knew he would, based on the pieces that he put in place here.âMcPhee was GM when the Capitals last made the Cup Final in 1998 but had just taken over the previous summer. Until the past year, his greatest accomplishment was rebuilding Washington into a perennial playoff team and title contender that went to the playoffs from 2008-2013.After missing the playoffs in 2014, the Capitals did not renew McPheeâs contract.âWhen youâre working with (players), theyâre sometimes like your own kids,â McPhee said. âYouâre on call for them all the time, youâre trying to help them, you try to steer them in the right direction. Then you get fired and youâre suddenly persona non grata because nobody wants to be seen to be too close to you in the organization. I understand thatâs how things change quickly and thatâs the business.âThings changed quickly because MacLellan went from McPheeâs college teammate and roommate and then right-hand man as assistant GM to the person who owner Ted Leonsis said gave âthe most negative of the interviewsâ among candidates. It is the most lenient approach to cannabis by any major North American professional sports league.âThe Substance Abuse & Behavioral Health Program for decades has been educating players on using drugs, legal or illegal,â Commissioner Gary Bettman said. âThat process will continue and we will consider what changes, if any, in our program have to be made. And yet he acknowledges thereâs a long way to go.âThereâs a lot of different things that point to the fact that the science is now backing it up,â Cote said. âThereâs probably billions of anecdotal stories, but those donât mean anything unless itâs backed by science, unless it follows the order of the way itâs supposed to be.âBettman contends the mainstream medical community has not concluded that cannabis prevents or heals injuries, and said an argument could be made to the contrary. Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins also largely deferred to the league office.âMajor League Baseball does a good job on educating players across the game on risk in and around that,â Atkins said. âItâs a complex situation that is very personal. Iâd need more information to say if weâd just tolerate it or not.âFor now, marijuana is technically a banned substance as a drug of abuse in the NHL. Cote would love to see marijuana removed from NHL/NHLPA testing to open the doors to widely accepting it, though players say it would take years for hockey culture to welcome such a change â if it ever would.âI played in Colorado where it was legal for a while and I thought it was going to change society a little bit, and it didnât, really,â Duchene said. âI donât think itâs going to be as big a thing as people might think.â
