HOUSTON -- Derek Jeter isnt sure who will be around him when the New York Yankees start 2014. The Houston Astros will be trying to snap a 15-game losing streak when they open the season. New York went into an off-season of uncertainty Sunday with a 5-1 victory over the Astros, whose skid was the longest at the end of the season in more than a century. Mark Reynolds, one of the many players signed this year to fill holes created by injuries, hit a tiebreaking homer in a four-run 14th inning. "There a lot of ifs and questions and whos coming back and whos not coming back," Jeter said. "I have no idea. It would be unfair for me to even speculate." Mariano Rivera didnt pitch in the final game of a career that started in 1995, and Robinson Cano and Curtis Granderson were among the players unsure whether they had played their final games for the Yankees, who finished tied for third in the AL East at 85-77, 12 games behind division-winning Boston. Bothered by sore legs, Alex Rodriguez didnt get into the finale. The appeal of his 211-game drug suspension starts Monday. New York finished with its fewest wins in a non-strike season since 1992 and failed to make the playoffs for only the second time in 19 years. Manager Joe Girardis contract is expiring, and he hasnt said whether he wants to come back for a seventh season. "I see it as a year where there are probably more areas to address than there have been in a long time," Girardi said. "So theres a lot to be done in the off-season." Same for the Astros. Houston (51-111) set a team record for defeats and had the most in the majors since Arizona lost the same amount in 2004. The Astros finished with the lengthiest season-ending losing streak since the 1899 Cleveland Spiders dropped their last 16, according to STATS. The Astros 324 losses over three years matched the 1917 Philadelphia Athletics for third most in major league history behind the 1962-64 New York Mets (340) and the 1963-65 Mets (332), according to STATS. Houston had two hits after the first inning and struck out 19 times. The Astros season total of 1,535 set a major league record, six more than the previous mark by Arizona in 2010, and Chris Carter finished with 212 after whiffing three times; only Reynolds (223 in 2009) and Adam Dunn (222 last year) have struck out more. "Its just a big learning experience for everybody," Carter said. "Its tough and tough for everybody around and its frustrating, but whatever it takes for us to get better and be competitive in the future, whatever it takes." Crippled by injuries to Jeter, their captain, along with Rodriguez, Granderson and Mark Teixeira, the Yankees never once put their envisioned starting lineup on the field in the same game. Teixeira was limited to 15 games, Jeter to 17 games, A-Rod to 44 and Granderson to 61. New York used a team-record 56 players. The Yankees put 21 players on the disabled list for a total of 28 stints, causing 1,493 missed days, STATS said. After the Yankees were eliminated from post-season on Wednesday, their final games turned into a tribute for Rivera, the 43-year-old career saves leader, and Andy Pettitte, the 41-year-old left-hander from suburban Deer Park. Rivera decided he wanted Thursday nights emotional Yankee Stadium finale to be his final game. He finished with 652 regular-season saves and apologized for not pitching in Houston this weekend. "Ive been ready for this moment," Rivera said. "Ive been happy with it, and move on." Pettitte went out with a five-hitter on Saturday, his first complete game in seven years, Granderson, who missed much of the season with a broken forearm and then a broken pinkie, hit a tying single in the eighth inning. Like Cano, he is eligible for free agency after the World Series. Cano didnt play Sunday, and the All-Star second baseman finished with a .314 average, 27 homers and 107 RBIs. With reports he is seeking a 10-year deal worth $305 million or more, the Yankees may not re-sign their most productive hitter -- especially if they want to get under next years luxury tax threshold of $189 million. As for the final game, Matt Daley (1-0) got the win. David Robertson, one of the possible replacements at closer for Rivera, pitched a perfect 14th. Reynolds led off the 14th with a homer off Lucas Harrell (6-17), Eduardo Nunez added a two-run double and J.R. Murphy a run-scoring single, giving New York a final three-game sweep in a season notable for failure and farewells. "There were memorable festivities, you know what Im saying?" Jeter said. "Andy and Mo, goes without saying how special that was. But on the field, it wasnt memorable." NOTES: Riveras final game drew a crowd of 40,542 at Minute Maid Park, putting the Astros final attendance at 1,656,443. Thats up slightly from last years total of 1,607,773, the lowest since Houston moved downtown in 2000. It was the second-biggest crowd of the season for Houston after opening day. ... Perhaps the biggest news of the game; the Jets scored both goals on the power play, the first time this season they scored two in a game. The Jets were in a power play slump with one goal in the last 15 games. "The power play was a big plus," said Coach Claude Noel post-game. "We really didnt do anything different, just hit the net and they went in. It was only a matter of time." Jets have now won five of the last six games (last three by shootouts), extended their home winning streak and overall winning streak to four games and are back to a game above .500 at 10-9-2. They are 7-5-1 at MTS Centre. Jets came out strong and badly outshot the Flyers in the first five minutes, however Steve Mason was great in the Flyers goal. The Jets got on the board at 5:36 as Dustin Byfuglien beat Mason for his second of the year and first power play goal of the season. 49 seconds later off a face-off Scott Hartnell took the puck around the Jets net and banked one in off Pavelec to tie the game. Wayne Simmonds added a Flyers power play goal at 11:45 and despite the good start the Jets were down 2-1. The shots ended 13-13. There was no scoring in the second with each team having nine shots on goal. "We had some breakout trouble in the second," continued Coach Noel. The Jets were very good in the third and finally tied the game on a power play. It was Byfugliens second of the game and third of the year as the Jets power play ended the night two-for-four. A great job by Toby Enstrom to keep a clearing attempt in the Flyers zone, good hustle by Byfuglien to get to an Evander Kane pass, and then a give and go with Olli Jokinen ended with a blast from the line that beat the right handed catching Mason glove side. Jets outshot the Flyers 13-4 in the third and played the period without Zach Bogosian who left late in the second with a lower body injury. His status for Sundays game in Minnesota is not known at this time. "We were down to 5 D in the tthird," continued Coach Noel, "but we were patient and confident that we could score and get the game to overtime.dddddddddddd We werent getting out of whack on momentum shifts." Pavelec also felt his team was very good in the third. "It was one of the best periods weve played this season." The Flyers had the better chances in overtime, resulting in Pavelec having to make a number of very good saves. "Pavs play has been superb," was the comment from Coach Noel. "He was good in overtime, he was tested at key times throughout the game." The shootout went as follows: Devin Setoguchi yes, Vincent Lecavalier no, Ladd no, Claude Giroux yes, Jokinen no, Matt Read no, Blake Wheeler no, Brayden Schenn no, Bryan Little yes, Kimmo Timonen no. Pavelec has now stopped 12 of 14 over the last four shootouts, all wins by the Jets. Jets are now 5-1 on the season in the shootout. Ladds streak of successful shootouts ended at seven for seven going back to last year. He had been five-for-five this season. Olli Jokenin had five shots on goal, the second time in the last three games he has hit that mark. Jokinen had two assists on the night, giving him 3-9-12 and two points short of his 7-7-14 point season of last year. Ladd also had five shots on goal, Byfuglien ended the night at 31:29 of ice time, the fifth time in his career he has played over 30 minutes. Coach Noel on Byfuglien, "hes enjoys playing the game, he plays with passion." Wheeler had six hits, Little was 60 % in the face-off department winning 15 of 25, while Jokinen won 15 of 27 for a 56% success rate. If Bogosian cant go Sunday Zach Redmond will draw in. Mark Stuart, injured in October, did skate with his teammates in the morning skate, the first time he has done that since late October. There is no time frame for his return. Same goes for the other injured players. Jets have now scored the games opening goal in five of the last seven games. Its three in four nights for the Jets with the game Sunday in Minnesota (TSN Jets, TSN 1290) and home Monday to Calgary. The home stand continues Thursday against Chicago and Saturday against Minnesota (all TSN Jets, TSN 1290).
