NEWARK, N.J. -- It didnt take Claude Giroux long to get over being left off the Canadian Olympic hockey team. Hours after getting the disappointing news that he would not be going to Sochi, Giroux woke up the road-weary Flyers with a power-play goal and Brayden Schenn scored the game-winner at 1:50 of overtime as Philadelphia beat the New Jersey Devils 3-2 Tuesday night after giving up a late short-handed goal that forced the extra session. "I mean, yeah, anytime someone takes something away from you, you want to prove them wrong," Giroux said after the Flyers finished off a 5-1 road trip with their second straight come-from-behind win. "But you know what? I put that behind me. I just have to move on here. Just play my game. Its a fun game out there. ... Im not going to stress myself with that." The 25-year-old Flyers captain seemed to have a good chance to make the Canadian team. He had 12 goals and 26 assists coming into the game and was playing good hockey. It wasnt good enough. "Well, you know Ive kind of accepted that Im not going to be on the team. Thats fine," said Giroux, who has eight goals and 11 assists in his last 13 games. "There are a lot of good players out there. It cant be an easy job for them to pick all those players, so right now Im just worried about the Flyers and keep winning games." Scott Hartnell also scored for Philadelphia and Ray Emery made 31 saves to win for the eighth time in nine games. Michael Ryder tied it at 2 on a short-handed goal with 30 seconds left in regulation. It came on a great feed from defenceman Marek Zidlicky, with goalie Martin Brodeur on the bench for an extra skater. Adam Henrique also scored for New Jersey, which is 0-2-1 in its last three games. Schenns game-winner was set up by a great back-door pass by defenceman Nicklas Grossman from the left point. He saw Schenn moving down the right side and found the centre in the right circle for a shot that beat Brodeur, who had 25 saves. Brodeur had made a close-in save on Schenn on a late power play to keep New Jersey in the game. However, Schenn, who was cut across the stomach with a skate earlier in the game, got his revenge when he took a pass from Grossmann that Brodeur didnt think the defenceman was capable of making. "Its kind of mind-boggling a little bit because we are better than what the results on the ice are," Brodeur said. Giroux tied it 1-all with a power-play goal at 5:18. Hartnell, who has points in eight straight games, gave the Flyers a 2-1 lead with a shot from the left circle on a quick counterattack. The Devils chances of tying the game seemed dim when Travis Zajac high-sticked Giroux with less than 2 minutes to play, but they found a way. "I thought Giroux played an outstanding game, from start to finish," Flyers coach Craig Berube said. "I thought he was physical, competed and did everything possible out there." The Flyers were unable to capitalize on a 1:44 power-play advantage at the start of the third period, but they didnt fail when Devils defenceman Mark Fayne was called for interference at 4:27. Less than a minute into the extra-man advantage, Giroux rifled a shot from the top of the left circle that beat Brodeur into the top corner of the net. The goalie may not have had a good view of the shot with Hartnell and Wayne Simmonds screening him. It was Girouxs 13th of the season and it gave him a team-high 39 points. Hartnell made the breakout pass out of the Flyers zone to Schenn and he hustled up the ice to take a return pass that he quickly put into the net for his 10th goal. The Devils took a 1-0 lead in the opening minute of the game on a great individual effort by Jaromir Jagr. He skated around a Flyers defenceman in the right circle and centred the puck across the crease. It tipped Ryan Clowes stick, and Henrique came out from behind the net to tap it in for his fourth goal in six games. The point was the 1,723rd of Jagrs career, tying him with former Pittsburgh Penguins teammate Mario Lemieux for seventh in NHL history. Devils coach Pete DeBoer said it was the second straight game in which his team outplayed an opponent and came up short because it failed to take advantage of scoring chances. "Its frustrating because we are not getting rewarded for the effort," DeBoer said. NOTES: When the Flyers play Montreal on Wednesday, it will be their first home game since Dec. 23. After trailing 28-0 in the second quarter, Illinois (3-7, 0-6) closed to 35-21 in the third on two Nathan Scheelhaase touchdown passes. Illinois had the momentum when the Buckeyes Ryan Shazier sacked backup quarterback Reilly OToole in the end zone. It was one of those hits that kept Ohio State in control when Illinois was getting back into the game. After Illinois closed to within two scores at 35-21, Scheelhaase had his helmet ripped off at his own goal line. Under the rules, he had to leave the game for a play, bringing OToole on. The Buckeyes teed off on the backup quarterback, with Shazier hitting him from behind and knocking the ball loose. Tight end Matt LaCosse recovered the ball for Illinois to limit the damage to the safety. The momentum swung swiftly back to the Buckeyes. On the following drive, Ohio State moved quickly to the Illini 8-yard line. Fast doesnt adequately describe how quick the Buckeyes came out Saturday. Thirty-six seconds into the game, Miller ran up the middle of the Illinois defence for a 69-yard touchdown and a 7-0 lead. He slowed at about the Illinois 5-yard line, jogging the last couple of steps. Over the next 15 minutes, it looked like it might be just that easy for a Buckeyes team in search of big wins that might convince voters that they belong in the national title picture. Hyde put the Buckeyes up 14-0 with just under five minutes left in the opening quarter on an 18-yard touchdown pass from Miller. Less than two minutes later, corner Bradley Roby added another touchdown, pulling down a tipped Scheelhaase pass and returning it 63 yards. In those first 15 minutes, the Illini offence consisted of 88 yards and a pair of Scheelhaase interceptions. But the Illini just wouldnt go away. Down 28-0, VAngelo Bentley returned a punt 67 yards for a touchdown with 7:29 left in the half to get the Illini on the board. Then, down 35-7, Scheelhaase engineered two scoring drives that got Illinois back in the game. The first ended with a 19-yard touchdown pass to Steve Hull with 2:25 left in the half to make the score 35-14. The second, early in the third quarter, ended with a 1-yard touchdown pass to Evan Wilson. The extra point pulled Illinois to within 35-21.
