In the first blockbuster trade of the offseason, the Detroit Tigers swapped out a power-hitting first baseman for a multi-threat second baseman. Numbers Game looks at the trade in which Prince Fielder and Ian Kinsler swap locales. The Rangers Get: 1B Prince Fielder. Fielder, 29, drove in more than 100 runs for the sixth time in the last seven seasons, but his .819 OPS was the lowest of his career, with his 2.2 fWAR his worst since 2008. From 2006 through 2013, Fielder slugged 283 home runs, ranking fourth, so his power ought to play well in Texas, which is one of the most hitter-friendly environments in the game. Fielder is also exceptionally durable, his 1283 games played since 2006 leading the majors, so he also has durability going for him. The question when it comes to Fielder is going to be in terms of value, particularly in comparison to the financial obligation that the Rangers are taking on by picking up the seven years and $168-million remaining on Fielders contract. Now, theyre not picking up all of it. Initial reports indicate that the Tigers are sending $30-million along to help defray the cost of Fielders contract. Fielder, who rates as a subpar fielder on a consistent basis, will replace Mitch Moreland at first base for the Rangers, with Moreland able to play a corner outfield spot or designated hitter, effectively filling in for the recently-departed David Murphy, who just signed with the Cleveland Indians. Furthermore, and perhaps the primary impetus for this deal from the Texas perspective, is that by dealing Ian Kinsler, the Rangers open up an everyday spot in the lineup for Jurickson Profar, the 20-year-old top prospect who came up through the organization as a shortstop, but played wherever he could fit into the Texas lineup last season and 32 games at second base was his most at any position. Provided he continues to stay reasonably healthy through his mid-30s, Fielder ought to be productive enough to make this deal palatable to the Rangers. If he hits 30 homers a year in the cleanup spot for the Rangers, thats an upgrade in power that the Rangers need. The Tigers Get: 2B Ian Kinsler. Kinsler is a 31-year-old who has been one of the most productive second basemen in the game but, for the first time in his career, his OPS has been under .760 the last two seasons. His 2.5 fWAR last season was his lowest since 2007. Since 2006, Kinsler is one of six players to record at least 150 home runs and 150 stolen bases. The others are Hanley Ramirez, Alex Rios, Matt Kemp, David Wright and Brandon Phillips; good company. While his power has dipped, particularly from the 2009 and 2011 seasons when he hit more than 30 home runs, Kinsler is also showing patience at the plate. His 3.9% rate of swinging strikes ranked seventh-lowest among qualified batters last season, so hes not an easy out. Its fair to expect that it will be more difficult for Kinsler to hit home runs in Detroit, compared to Arlington. Kinsler does figure to be an upgrade over Omar Infante, but the benefit of moving out Fielder is that the Tigers should be able to shift Miguel Cabrera back to first base. Cabreras a great hitter, but a poor fielder and will likely do less damage with the glove playing at first. Over the last couple years, Kinsler has a subpar Ultimate Zone Rating, but his Defensive Runs Saved is among the highest at the position. Since 2009, Kinsler has 59 DRS, ranking second among second basemen. Kinsler has four years and $57-million remaining on his contract (with a $10-million option, $5-million buyout, for 2018). In the total summation, it will cost the Tigers about $92-million for four years of Ian Kinsler and the Rangers will pay about $138-million for seven years of Fielder. Both players should be productive, though declining as their contracts take them to their mid-30s. The benefit to the Tigers is that they create some financial flexibility that will come in handy for signing others, most notably Cy Young winner Max Scherzer, who is slated to become a free agent at the end of the 2014 season. Blake Griffin had 27 points and eight rebounds, Chris Paul added 19 points -- including a go-ahead layup in the final minute -- and the Clippers beat the Hawks 109-108 on Saturday night for their season-high seventh straight win. Bergmann, who came ninth in Bad Gastein a year ago for his only previous top-10 result, defeated Andreas Prommegger of Austria in the final of the single-run format. Aaron March of Italy finished third by beating Sebastian Kislinger of Austria.CINCINNATI, Ohio -- The Reds went two weeks before breaking out of their hitting slump. Chris Heisey connected for his first grand slam and Devin Mesoraco homered and drove in a career high-tying four runs as Cincinnati took advantage of Tampa Bays depleted pitching staff for a 12-4 victory on Sunday. The Reds best offensive showing of the season featured Mesoracos three-run homer, Joey Vottos two-run shot and Heiseys pinch-hit slam in the eighth. Jay Bruce doubled, walked four times and scored four runs. The Reds had a brief meeting following a 1-0 loss on Saturday that epitomized their season-long struggle at the plate. "The key early in the season is to not lose faith," manager Bryan Price said. "We understand that were a good team, and everyone in there knows it." For the first time all season, they played like it. The Reds salvaged the final game of their interleague series but remained in last place in the NL Central at 4-8. The hitters have been the biggest problem, tied for last in the majors heading into the game. Zack Cozart got it going with a bases-loaded double off Cesar Ramos (0-1), making his first start of the season because of injuries. The Reds finished with a season high in runs -- they hadnt scored more than six in any previous game -- and hits with 13. "Its so early that you really cant say were not going to hit with runners in scoring position," Mesoraco said. "Weve just got to bear down and try not to do too much." Left-hander Tony Cingrani (1-1) gave up five hits in 6 1-3 innings. Ben Zobrist homered from both sides of the plate, hitting two-run shots off Cingrani and right-hander Nick Christiani. "It was great to see them come through and break out and get five runs (early)," Cingrani said. "It was just a matter of time. Weve got a great hitting lineup. Today was the day they broke out of it." The Rays are 3-3 on a trip that has been tough on their rotation. Matt Moore went on the disabled list with a sore elbow on Tuesday, and Alex Cobb joinedd him Sunday with a strained oblique.dddddddddddd. Also, reliever Joel Peralta was sick, leaving him unavailable. The injuries affected the final game of the series. Ramos, who had made four relief appearances this season, started in Moores place and helped the Reds offence get unstuck. "One of those days, man," manager Joe Maddon said. "You just file it and move on. This is less than the 30-minute rule. This is the 30-second rule. Just drop it and move on." Cincinnati came into the game tied with San Diego for fewest runs in the majors with 28. Ramos helped the Reds by walking the bases loaded in the second, and Cozart hit a ground-rule double for his third hit of the season and a 2-0 lead. Vottos second homer of the series sparked a 10-batter, five-run third inning. Ramos left after throwing 47 pitches. Brandon Gomes relieved and gave up Mesoracos homer. Mesoraco added a sacrifice fly in the fifth. The catcher opened the season on the disabled list with a strained oblique. In four games the past week, he went 7 for 14 with three doubles, two homers and six RBIs. Heisey connected in the eighth off Josh Lueke for his seventh career pinch-hit homer. NOTES: The Rays open a three-game series in Baltimore on Monday, starting Chris Archer (1-0) against Wei-Yin Chen (1-1). ... The Reds continue their six-game homestand by hosting Pittsburgh.
