PITTSBURGH -- It is the time of the season when rookie pitchers are fading or even being shut down for the year. Yet Gerrit Cole seems to be just getting started. Cole pitched seven strong innings and got home run help from Marlon Byrd and Jose Tabata, leading the Pittsburgh Pirates past the Chicago Cubs 2-1 Saturday night. The Pirates have won five of six and moved into a first-place tie in the NL Central with St. Louis, which lost to Seattle 4-1. Cole (8-7) gave up one run and five hits. The rookie struck out seven and walked three. The 23-year-old Cole has been outstanding in his last six starts, going 3-2 with a 2.29 ERA with 35 strikeouts and nine walks. He won for just the second time in his last eight home starts. "I dont really have any answer," Cole said about staying strong into mid-September. "Im just staying with my routine and chucking it as long as I can every time I get the ball." Cole, the first overall pick in the 2011 draft from UCLA, has pitched 173 1-3 innings between Pittsburgh and Triple-A Indianapolis. The Pirates have built in extra rest between starts whenever possible, and that plan seems to be paying off. "You never know where surprises are going to come from," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. "You didnt know where he was going to be able to take you this season but his actions are speaking loud and clear." Tony Watson pitched the eighth and Mark Melancon worked the ninth to finish off the five-hitter and earn his 15th save in 17 chances. Byrd hit a solo home run off James Russell (1-6) in the seventh to put Pittsburgh ahead 2-1. It was Byrds 23rd home run of the season and second in 17 games since being acquired Aug. 27 from the New York Mets in a trade. He is hitting .323 for the Pirates. Byrd has never been to the post-season in his 12-year career. "Its a blast," Byrd said. "To come here where were selling games out, the whole town is excited, you have the whole thing of wiping out the streak of 20 (consecutive) losing seasons -- its just been amazing experience so far. What will be more amazing, though, is playing in October." The Pirates, looking for their first post-season berth since 1992, got a tying home from Tabata in the sixth. Pittsburgh maintained a 2 1/2-game lead over Cincinnati in the NL wild-card race. Chicago got its run on Nate Schierholtzs RBI double to right-centre in the first inning. Anthony Rizzo also tried to score on the hit from first base, but was thrown out on a strong relay from Byrd to second baseman Neil Walker to the plate. "That whole play was perfectly executed," Cole said. Scott Baker pitched well again in his second start with the Cubs since recovering from reconstructive elbow surgery, allowing one run and three hits in six innings with four strikeouts and no walks. Last Sunday, in his first major league outing since Sept. 22, 2011, with Minnesota, Baker pitched five scoreless innings against Milwaukee. "He threw the ball well again," Chicago manager Dale Sveum said. "His velocity was a tad better this time and he has that live fastball that really moves. Theres still something there, thats for sure. Hes done a good job." NOTES: Pittsburgh LHP Wandy Rodriguez will not pitch again this season because of continuing pain in his left arm. Rodriguez, who has been on the disabled list since June 6 with forearm tightness, continued to feel pain Saturday, two days after pitching a five-inning simulated game. ... Pirates LF Starling Marte had six plate appearances Saturday in a simulated game, facing LHP Kris Johnson. Though Marte continues to feel pain in his bruised right hand, the Pirates are hopeful he may be able to return to the lineup as soon as Monday. ... OF Brian Bogusevic started in left field for Chicago in place of OF Junior Lake for the third time in four games. Bogusevic entered the day hitting .357 with three home runs in nine September games. ... The four-game series concludes Sunday with Cubs LHP Travis Wood (9-11, 3.05) facing Pittsburgh LHP Francisco Liriano (16-7, 2.92). The Cleveland Indians, Tampa Bay Rays, and Texas Rangers all won on Sunday meaning the Rangers will host the Rays in a play-in game on Monday.Winning begets winning in professional sports, and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers — fresh off snapping their seven-game losing skid with a Banjo Bowl victory — are hoping to build off their second win of the season as they begin a home-and-home series with the CFLs cellar-dwelling 1-9 Edmonton Eskimos. "Ive been on teams that have been on losing streaks and broke out of it. All it takes is that first one, and if you just focus on one game at a time then you can climb out of things like this," said Winnipeg defensive end Greg Peach. "And I think after that first Saskatchewan game we kind of figured out that if we put a full game together we can put them away and put any team away. Now we have that confidence that we can do it to any team." "I was only here for a couple days before that first game (in Saskatchewan)," added Peach, who joined the Bombers just three days before the Labour Day Classic in Regina. "But I just know from experience of teams that have been on big losing streaks that I know what they were going through the last seven games. And I understand what the mentality is and what players are thinking. I think now we got this first win, I think theres a confidence thats building and guys are believing and putting things together." Peach, a five-year CFL veteran, knows that in the Canadian game you cant count a team out of the playoffs regardless of their record until late in the season — especially in this years East Division. And his coach knows it too. "Were a unique league in that respect because six of the eight teams are going to the playoffs. In the NFL or NCAA or whatever, if you had a below .500 record you wouldnt even sniff at the playoffs," said head coach Tim Burke. "Theyre aware. I mean most of them are aware. I cant believe some of them werent." With the youngest roster in the league this is the case. Several Blue Bombers didnt know until this week that they are still in the hunt for a playoff spot. And with Eastern opponents Hamilton, Toronto, and Montreal facing tough road games over the next two weeks, Winnipeg has a chance to capitalize on back-to-back games against the single-win Eskimos. "It was just brought to my attention that we were back into the playoff race," said second-year defensive back Demond Washington, fresh off his Defensive Player of the Week nod. "Weve just got to bear down and play hard this week. Every week from here on out just take it one week at a time and well get it done.dddddddddddd." "Once you get that win up under your belt, you gain a little confidence and you want to go out, you want to play more, you want to win more. So I think that win is contagious. All the guys are going to come out and were going to play hard." It may be cliché, but it appears Winnipegs bench boss is having his team focus on the weekly task at hand. "I prefer to focus on one game; one game at a time," added Burke. "I mean, I have in the past said hey, heres a reason why we should be working our butts off, were only four points out, and then after last week we were only six points out. But now were back to four points out. My approach has always been to take it one game at a time and focus on that. Use the game itself as your motivation. Dont use playoffs because thats something you cant grasp." "But you know, its interesting. As the season goes along, were still in it. So we have a lot to fight for, thats for sure." Notes: The Winnipeg Football Club is now officially in the post-Buck Pierce era, as acting GM Kyle Walters moved the veteran pivot to the B.C. Lions for Canadian receiver Akeem Foster. The 26-year-old made Winnipegs 46-man roster this week, but he isnt expected to dress... Fellow Canadian receiver Jade Etienne, recovering from a concussion suffered in the Labour Day Classic, practiced this week and has been cleared medically to start in Edmonton after missing the Banjo Bowl... 2012 third-overall draft pick Tyson Pencer will dress for his first professional game in Edmonton this week. He will start at right guard, bumping Shannon Boatman back to right tackle... Guard/tackle Paul Swiston has been placed on the nine-game injured list with shoulder and knee injuries... ...Winnipeg pulled off another trade this week, acquiring veteran offensive lineman Marc Parenteau and a 2014 third-round pick from Toronto for Canadian running back Anthony Woodson and a fifth-round pick. Parenteau will dress as the Bombers sixth lineman this week... With Chad Simpson still on the shelf for at least another week with a foot injury, Winnipeg added import running back Shawnbrey McNeal to the practice roster. Will Ford, who was named the leagues Special Teams Player of the Week after his 98-yard kickoff return touchdown in the Banjo Bowl, will start again this week in place of Simpson. Backup safety Dan West is out two weeks with a hamstring pull...
