When Braden Holtby took some time off in February Authentic Vita Vea Jersey , playing in only nine of the Washington Capitalsâ 14 games, he finally had a chance to reflect on aspects of his game.
It might seem easy to say being benched in favor of Philipp Grubauer for the first two games of the postseason ignited Holtbyâs standout playoff run. But he credits his midseason reprieve for a revival that pushed him and Washington into the Stanley Cup Final against the Vegas Golden Knights. Game 1 in Monday night.
âIt was great to just have a break in February where I could really analyze myself in a game, go to work, kind of get back to those roots and just working as hard as I possibly can to figure out different things of myself and the game,â Holtby said. âThis year I think is one of those years where Iâve learned more and soaked in more knowledge than previous years.â
The 28-year-old veteran enters the Final with a 12-6 playoff mark, a 2.04 goals-against average and a .924 save percentage. The Capitals havenât allowed a goal in 159 minutes, 27 seconds, since Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals against Tampa Bay â including 157:13 with Holtby on the ice.
Several key members of the Golden Knights are no strangers to Holtby, including general manager George McPhee, goalie coach Dave Prior and defenseman Nate Schmidt, a trio that have been a part of the Capitals organization during their careers. It was Prior who recommended McPhee and company draft Holtby in 2008, when the Capitals made him the second pick of the fourth round (and the 10th goalie taken in the draft).
Holtby said Prior, who has helped Vegas goalie and three-time Stanley Cup champion Marc-Andre Fleury improve aspects of his game this season, taught him ways to analyze his game he would have never thought of.
âHeâs obviously one of the best, he helped me a ton http://www.packersauthorizedshops.com/authentic-or...rks-jer sey ,â Holtby said. âHe taught me how to practice correctly, how to really analyze my game honestly and grow in different ways. Before, as a young kid, I just thought if you could just work as hard as you can, thatâs how you get better. But thereâs strategic ways and he was awesome, very calm, very unbiased watching games.â
Schmidt said a common comparison between Holtby and Fleury is easy to see.
âBoth guys are very athletic,â Schmidt said. âThatâs something I knew about Fleury a little bit, and itâs caused a lot of heartache to me over the years. You see that kind of thing with guys who are never out of a save. Thatâs what makes both of them special players.â
Holtbyâs regular-season numbers (2.99 GAA, .907 save percentage) are a career worst. He said taking time to focus on things he never was able to do during a regular season has helped ease his mind and relieve certain pressures he was putting on himself during games.
âObviously throughout my career of hockey playing, you know that putting too much pressure on yourself and doing too much is never that good,â Holtby said. âAnd I got caught up trying to do too much, and it never works too well, and it ended up snowballing.â
Snowballing to the tune of him allowing four or more goals in eight of the 16 games he played during January and February. But over his last eight regular-season appearances in March, he finished 6-2 and never allowed more than three goals. Heâs allowed three or fewer goals in 17 of the 18 playoff games heâs played in.
âIâve learned a lot of valuable things about myself Jets Elite Jerseys , about the way hockey is now, itâs changed,â Holtby said. âYou have to play a little different than in the past with the speed and the way the game is mostly all about offense now. Itâs different that way and I think that was one thing I had to learn.â

More Stanley Cup coverage: Howie Roseman wrapped his arms around Doug Pederson on the sideline in the final minute of Philadelphiaâs lopsided win over Minnesota in the NFC championship game and flashed a big smile.
The most criticized team executive in the city engineered a dramatic turnaround.
After finishing last in the NFC East last season, the Eagles (15-3) are in the Super Bowl against the New England Patriots (15-3).
Radio hosts, columnists, writers, fans and even bloggers are not blasting Roseman anymore because he made all the right moves to build a team thatâs one victory away from the franchiseâs first NFL title since 1960.
Itâs been quite a journey for Roseman, the once-exiled executive vice president of football operations.
Roseman rose from being a non-paid summer intern in 2000 to youngest general manager in the NFL at age 34 in 2010. But in January 2015, Roseman lost control of personnel decisions in a power struggle with former coach Chip Kelly.
Owner Jeffery Lurie elevated Roseman to his current position, but gave Kelly full control on the draft, trades and all player moves.
Kelly bombed and was fired less than 12 months later. Roseman, after spending a year self-reflecting, regained control over personnel decisions. He hired Pederson to coach and Joe Douglas to be vice president of player personnel and quickly began undoing the mess Kelly created.
Roseman traded players Kelly signed to horrible contracts â DeMarco Murray and Byron Maxwell â and built enough assets to help the Eagles move from No. 13 in the draft to the second spot. With the second overall pick in 2016, the team selected Carson Wentz from North Dakota State.
Wentz is the main reason Philadelphia was in position to get to the Super Bowl. He had an MVP-caliber season before tearing his ACL in Week 14 when the Eagles secured the NFC East title.
The Eagles didnât crumble after losing their franchise player because they have a solid backup in Nick Foles . Kelly traded Foles, one season after he was offensive MVP of the Pro Bowl. Roseman brought Foles back last March Harold Landry Color Rush Jersey , giving him an $11 million, two-year deal to provide insurance behind Wentz.
Foles shredded the Vikings and their top-ranked defense last week.
âItâs a credit to Howie and Joe to bring a guy like that in here who is very capable of getting the job done,â Pederson said.
Many of the players Roseman acquired before the season made big plays in the 38-7 rout over Minnesota. He signed wide receivers Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith, running back LeGarrette Blount and cornerback Patrick Robinson to team-friendly contracts in free agency. They combined to score Philadelphiaâs five touchdowns.
âHeâs a very, very smart guy,â Lurie said. âIn the role today to be in charge of football operations, it is so much more than simply what has been in the past decades with scouting. Scouting is a big part of it, but you have to manage in so many ways short-term needs, midterm needs, long-term needs.â
The Eagles entered the season with modest expectations, but Wentz was spectacular and the defense was excellent. After a 7-1 start, Roseman bolstered the offense by getting running back Jay Ajayi from Miami for a fourth-round pick. Ajayi has become a valuable addition.
âWe found ourselves in an interesting situation where this is Year 2 of the plan but we have a quarterback that was advancing by leaps and bounds and a team that was playing great, great defense, and an offensive line that was really good,â Lurie said.
âWe thought: `Why canât we win it all?â We took an approach where we were going to do everything possible that could help our team this year Authentic Justin Jones Jersey , and at the same time not relinquish any options going forward. I think that was the key to the strategy. We were aggressive at the trade deadline because we thought we had a chance. Normally you wouldnât do that, but we thought we had a chance.â
Other key starters Roseman acquired in trades or free agency since reclaiming his role as personnel boss: defensive tackle Tim Jernigan, cornerback Ronald Darby, safety Rodney McLeod, Pro Bowl right guard Brandon Brooks, left guard Stefen Wisniewski and kicker Jake Elliott. He also drafted starting cornerback Jalen Mills in the seventh round in 2016 and starting left tackle Halapoulivaati Vaitai in the fifth round that year.
The Eagles have overcome season-ending injuries to Wentz, nine-time Pro Bowl left tackle Jason Peters, middle linebacker Jordan Hicks, return specialist/running back Darren Sproles, special teams captain Chris Maragos and kicker Caleb Sturgis because of the depth of a roster Roseman put together.
