Basketball Australia says world governing body FIBA will enter ânew territoryâ when it investigates a bench-clearing brawl during Australiaâs World Cup qualifying match against the Philippines Monday.
It would not rule out criminal charges being laid.
Thirteen players Dak Prescott Jersey , including four Australians, were ejected for their part in the brawl which took place in the third quarter of the match at the Philippine Arena in Ciudad de Victoria. The match was won 79-48 by Australia.
Fighting erupted with four minutes left in the quarter when Australiaâs Chris Goulding was knocked to the ground by an opponent, with Gouldingâs teammate Daniel Kickert reacting by flooring a Philippines player with an elbow.
Philippines players and officials poured onto the court and a wild melee began. Australiaâs Sudan-born NBA star Thon Maker was seen to aim several flying kicks at Philippines players and Goulding was trapped on the floor under a pile of players as punches were thrown and chairs were tossed into the arena by fans.
The Australian players were later helped to leave the arena, board a bus and return to their hotel by representatives of the Australian embassy.
Basketball Australia chief executive Anthony Moore said players were bruised and shaken but not seriously hurt. He said his organization would fully co-operate with any FIBA investigation or tribunal but he would not speculate on what sanctions might be imposed.
âI canât speculate on what the sanctions will be because weâre actually in new territory in this regard,â Moore said. âWe want to work with FIBA on the tribunal and get that outcome and weâll assess our outcomes from there.
âWe have briefed our lawyers on that, as you would expect us to do.â
Moore said Kickertâs retaliation after the foul on Goulding was an âunsavory act.â
âWhilst we accept our responsibility for our role in last nightâs incident, what we donât accept is the action whereby fans and officials actually get involved in the fray Tramaine Brock Jersey ,â Moore said. âWe find that absolutely unacceptable.â
Moore said players feared for their safety in the âtinderboxâ atmosphere inside the stadium.
âYou will have seen in the vision our athletes and coaches actually stayed on the court for a considerable amount of time because that was deemed to be the safest place for our players and coaches,â he said. âThatâs a fairly compelling set of circumstances; are we actually going to get out of here unscathed?
âPhysically our players are fine. Theyâre bruised and battered⦠(but) all the players are shaken up and Chris in particular.â
Milwaukee Bucks center Maker has defended his role in the incident, saying in a statement on Twitter that he was attempting to defend his teammates.
âI am deeply disappointed in the actions displayed during yesterdayâs game against the Philippines,â Maker said. âBeing from a war-torn country, basketball for me has always been a means to bring people together.
âI feel a great responsibility as an NBA player to carry myself in a way that promotes peace and unity.
âMy hope is that this experience provides a springboard for discussion regarding the security surrounding these games.â
The initial, albeit technically erroneous, reports regarding Odell Beckhamâs new contract pegged the deal at $95 million over five years Andre Reed Jersey , giving the deal an average value of $19 million. But thatâs not what the deal is worth.
Yes, the new-money average of the base deal sits at $18 million per year (five years, $90-not-95 million). And that puts him north of Steelers receiver Antonio Brownâs new-money average of $17 million annually.
But Camp Beckham eschewed the new-money analysis when arguing that the Giants had offered Beckham less than the $16 million per year obtained on the open market by Chiefs receiver Sammy Watkins, the highest paid player at the position for deals analyzed from the moment of signing. As to Beckham, who already was due to make $8.459 million in 2018, he didnât sign a five-year, $90 million deal that gets stapled onto the back of his current contract but a new deal that covers six years and has a base value of $98.459 million.
Thatâs an average from the moment signing of $16.4 million per year. And it makes him the highest paid receiver Mike Singletary Jersey , by $400,000 per year. And thatâs hardly the kind of bump over the prior high-water mark that a supposedly âtranscendentâ player should have gotten.
So why did Beckham take that instead of $20 million per year or more at signing? Because Beckham wisely realized that the bird in the hand had grown more than fat enough to justify not waiting for the proverbial two in the bush. With the Giants reportedly guaranteeing $41 million at signing and providing an injury guarantee of $65 million, it would have been foolish for Beckham to say no.
Ultimately, thatâs how to get these deals done, from the teamâs perspective. What the player wants is roughly as relevant as Spauldingâs laundry list of desire foodstuffs before starting the back nine at Bushwood. What the player will or wonât refuse is what really matters. Beckham wouldnât, and couldnât, refuse the offer that the Giants made Theo Riddick Jersey , even if it only (only?) pays him $16.4 million per year over six years, committing him to the team until heâs on the brink of 32.
