Adam Jones took a big swing Anthony Duclair Jersey , and the result was a popup. He slammed his bat to the ground in disgust and dutifully jogged to first base.
Somehow, that seemingly routine out became the catalyst for a six-run inning that carried the Baltimore Orioles past the Los Angeles Angels 8-2 on Sunday.
Manny Machado and Mark Trumbo hit consecutive homers after the Angels lost the popup in the sun, and the Orioles got a strong pitching performance from Kevin Gausman in snapping a seven-game losing streak.
Los Angeles was up 1-0 when Jones led off the fourth against Deck McGuire (0-1) by hitting a ball high in the air. Second baseman Ian Kinsler couldnât catch sight of it, and the ball landed on the dirt between second and first for a gift single.
âSounds funny to say, but those are the types of things that have been happening to us,â Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. âKinslerâs as good a second baseman as there is.â
Machado followed with his 21st home run , Trumbo connected , and Steve Wilkerson singled in a run before Tim Beckham capped the surge with a two-run single.
The home runs were lamentable, but the popup was especially galling to the Angels.
âObviously itâs unexpected. It happens,â manager Mike Scioscia said. âHe thought he had a bead on it and all of a sudden it disappeared in the sun.â
Jones got credit for a hit, but it sure didnât feel that way.
âSure, itâs just like an error,â Scioscia said. âI donât think (McGuire) was affected by it, but obviously it adds fuel to the fire and starts a rally for them.â
Trumbo homered again in the fifth and Trey Mancini also connected to help Baltimore secure its only victory during a seven-game homestand that began with four straight losses to Seattle.
Gausman (4-6) weathered temperatures in the upper 90s to go eight innings, allowing two runs and six hits to end a run of eight straight winless starts.
The Orioles improved to 1-15 against the AL West and won at home for only the second time in 19 games since May 13.
Baltimore still owns the worst record in the majors, but there were plenty of smiles to go around on this day.
âWeâre undefeated in July Jared Spurgeon Jersey ,â Showalter said with a grin. âSometimes, you have to laugh to keep from crying, right? We have good people. It just hasnât happened for us, but we have half the season left. Thatâs the approach weâre taking.â
Kole Calhoun homered and Albert Pujols drove in a run for the Angels, who were seeking the first season sweep of Baltimore in franchise history. They settled for going 5-1, their fewest losses against the Orioles in one year.

Asked if the two-way star could be activated for this weekâs series against Seattle, Scioscia replied, âLetâs get by today, see how he does.â ⦠RHP Garrett Richards (hamstring) could be ready to come off the DL on Wednesday to start against Seattle.
Orioles: OF Colby Rasmus was held out with an illness. ⦠RHP Darren OâDay said he opted for season-ending surgery on his hamstring because there was no guarantee he would be healthy by September. âI need to functionally get it fixed so it just doesnât happen again,â he said. ⦠RHP Chris Tillman (back) will need at least one more rehabilitative start after allowing five runs and eight hits in 3 2/3 innings for Triple-A Norfolk on Saturday night.

Angels: After taking Monday off, LA faces Seattle on the road to launch a three-game series. Andrew Heaney (4-5, 3.95 ERA) is 0-3 with a 6.14 ERA in seven road starts.
Orioles: Following a day off Monday, Baltimore sends Alex Cobb (2-9, 6.75) to the mound in the opener of a two-game interleague series in Philadelphia.

The San Francisco 49ers rewarded wide receiver Marquise Goodwin for his career-best season by giving him a three-year contract extension Thursday worth $20.3 million.
Goodwin was one of San Franciscoâs best free-agent acquisitions last season when he signed a two-year deal, giving the team a needed deep threat down the field. His play led the 49ers to lock him up through the 2021 season with the new deal that will guarantee him $10 million Riley Sutter Capitals Jersey , according to NFL Network.
After putting up little production in his first four seasons in Buffalo, Goodwin is excited for the chance to remain in coach Kyle Shanahanâs system with Jimmy Garoppolo at quarterback.
âI definitely feel like this offense is good for me in a sense that it allows me to be a football player,â he said. âIt gives me the opportunity to be out there and make plays and thatâs what you want in a scheme and a system. Itâs not just me. Everybody gets to shine. Thatâs whatâs good about this offense. Itâs not a one-man wrecking crew. Itâs not one guy making it happen. Itâs a lot of guys making opportunities to make plays.â
The 27-year-old Goodwin set career highs last season with 56 catches for 962 yards and scored two touchdowns. The former Olympic long jumper had caught just 49 passes for 780 yards in four seasons with Buffalo.
He also won the teamâs Len Eshmont Award for inspirational and courageous play and won the teamâs Ed Block Courage Award given to the player that exemplified a commitment to sportsmanship and courage.
It was a trying season off the field for Goodwin, whose premature son died hours before he caught an 83-yard touchdown pass against the New York Giants on Nov. 12, and whose biological father died days before he had 10 catches for 114 yards against Tennessee on Dec. 17.
âFrom the minute Marquise joined our team, he has shown us everything we want to see in a 49er,â general manager John Lynch said. âHe leads by example with a tremendous work ethic, a trait that helped him expand his repertoire as a football player and post his most successful season as a pro last year. Marquise earned this extension by coming in every day focused on doing his job and, as a result, he made himself and his teammates better.â
Goodwin really excelled after Garoppolo took over as quarterback last December. He had 29 catches for 384 yards and one touchdown in five games with Garoppolo as the starter, tying for fifth in the NFL in catches and ranking sixth in yards during those games.
Goodwin was also tracked with the fastest speed by a receiver on any catch last season according to Next Gen Stats through SportRadar, running 21.68 mph on a 55-yard catch from C.J. Beathard against Arizona on Nov. 5.
He narrowly missed out on a 1,000-yard season when he was knocked out of the season finale against the Rams with a concussion after a helmet-to-helmet hit by Blake Countess. Goodwin has had at least four concussions in his career.
âI was not scared at all by any means,â he said. âI know the game I play. Itâs tough, itâs physical. Things like that happen at some point. The people in the stands were more scared than I was based on how it looked and me being unconscious for a few seconds. Iâm blessed for the opportunity to be healthy and go into 2018 with new opportunities.â
