OTTAWA -- Sam Zakutney took a step toward an Olympic dream Friday at the Canadian gymnastics championships. After charging into the lead on Wednesday in the Tyro class, the Ottawa native kept up the pace on the second day to win the all around gold with a total score of 161.250 points. Anthony Tawfick of Mississauga, Ont., placed second with 160.650 points and Ryan Oehrlein of Georgetown, Ont., was third at 159.050. "My goal wasnt to win but just to do my best," said Zakutney, 14, who is aiming for a berth at the Youth Olympics next summer. "I just focused on my technique and the steps I needed to do the skills properly and that allowed me to push my limits," added Zakutney, who had a large group of supporters in the stands cheering loudly every time he performed a routine. "It can be a bit stressful when everybodys yelling and theres so much noise, but its just really nice to know that people are encouraging me to do my best." In the mens junior competition, Steven Chaplin of Mission, B.C., took the all around gold with a combined score of 152.250 over two days of competition. Justin Karstadt of Toronto was second with 151.850 points and first-day leader Matthew Halickman of Montreal dropped back to third with a score of 150.800. "I just wanted to hit all six of my routines, make a few finals and finish in the top five all around," said Chaplin, 16, who exceeded expectations in his national debut as a junior. Chaplin will be going for more medals in the event finals on Saturday. In other events, Meixi Semple of Oshawa, Ont., won the all around womens national novice title and Jade Chrobok of Toronto took the all round gold in the high performance novice event. The 40-year-old Sanchez Vicario let loose against her whole family in a book of memoirs published on Tuesday. She says she does not speak to her parents or her three siblings. She says her parents were obsessed with her succeeding in a career which netted four Grand Slam singles titles, and even tried to interfere in her love life. Sanchez Vicarios mother, Marisa, responded in an open letter to Spanish media that she and her husband Emilio were devastated by their daughters accusations that they mismanaged her tournament winnings and endorsement money disastrously. In the book, Sanchez Vicario says her parents, her father in particular, exercised tight control over who would train her and other aspects of her career, and her winnings. She got a monthly payment from her father and trusted him to invest the rest. "I never doubted that my father would manage my assets in the most efficient and beneficial way," she wrote. She retired in 2002, and after "breaking free" of her parents influence, "the surprise came. Then, the disappointment. The suurprise of finding myself without resources after a career full of successes and therefore winnings.dddddddddddd" She added: "They left me with nothing and I owe the tax authorities. "How can it be that everything I achieved has vanished, that it does not exist?" Her mothers letter was published on Monday, before the book came out. Lengthy excerpts of it ran in the newspaper El Mundo over the weekend. Marisa Vicario Rubio said she would reserve comment on specifics until she read the book and consulted with her lawyers. But she insisted "we never took advantage of Arantxa and under no circumstances is she broke." She said 75-year-old Emilio has a weak heart, was diagnosed two years ago with intestinal cancer, and has Alzheimers disease. But the daughters accusations were worse than all the illnesses, she said. "That really is tough," she wrote. Sanchez Vicario won the French Open three times, the U.S. Open once and made the final of Wimbledon and the Australian Open. She added 10 more doubles or mixed doubles titles from Grand Slams. She also helped Spain win the Fed Cup five times, and was the first Spanish woman elected to the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2007. ' ' '
