SHANGHAI, China -- American Ryan Lochte posted the fastest qualifying time in the 200-meter freestyle at the world championships, inserting himself into the rivalry between Michael Phelps and Paul Biedermann. cheap jerseys . Lochte was timed in one minute 46.34 seconds to win his heat against Phelps on Monday. "Im a little shaky," Lochte said. "I kind of just wanted to have an easy swim but Michael was next to me and we were pushing each other. It was rough." Phelps advanced to the evening semifinals in fifth at 1:46.98 -- 4.2 seconds off his best time. "Ryan and I are going to be in the second heat tonight, so well see what its going to take to get top eight," Phelps said. "I told him this morning, We have to go 47 to make it back." Phelps finished third in his heat behind Lochte and Sebastiaan Verschuren of the Netherlands, who was second-quickest overall in 1:46.53. "I didnt think I was going that fast," he said. "Im happy with that though, feeling how I did." Phelps led off the U.S. 4x100 freestyle relay that earned a bronze on Sunday. Lochte swam in the prelims, but didnt return for the final. "We always want to win and that didnt happen," Lochte said. "It kind of bummed us out, but weve got to bounce back from it." Biedermann, the defending champion from Germany, qualified third at 1:46.56, followed by 400 free champion Park Tae-hwan of South Korea at 1:46.63. Phelps has a score to settle with Biedermann, who stunned the two-time world champion two years ago in Rome while wearing the now-banned high-tech bodysuit. The German also took away the 14-time Olympic gold medallist s world record. Lochte didnt swim the event in Rome. "I hope I can swim with some of the Americans in the race," Biedermann said. In the womens 100-metre backstroke preliminaries, Sinead Russell of Oakville, Ont., broke the Canadian record while qualifying second. Natalie Coughlin of the U.S., was the fastest qualifier in 59.73, just ahead of Russell who followed in 59.80 eclipsing the previous national mark of 1:00.21 set by Katy Murdoch of Calgary in 2009. "Im really happy about that swim," Russell said. "To go faster I need to keep racing the people beside me and not be afraid of them." Julia Wilkinson of Stratford, Ont., also reached the semifinals, finishing 11th in 1:00.82. Defending champion and world record-holder Gemma Spofforth of Britain failed to move on, finishing 23rd in 1:01.89. She said she had food poisoning two days ago and hadnt been able to eat much. It wasnt the result Spofforth was looking for a year before the London Olympics. "Ive had a bit of a bad year," she said. "I havent really been quite so motivated, so hopefully this will be a kick in the butt to get ready for next year." World champion Rebecca Soni of the United States led the way in the 100 breaststroke at 1:05.54. Ji Liping of China was second in 1:07.10, followed by Sarah Poewe of Britain in 1:07.38. "First swim always is a little nerve-racking, not knowing if youre going to do great or do awful," Soni said. "That was OK, but Im hoping tonight will feel a little better and be a little faster." Calgarys Jillian Tyler qualified in fifth. Two-time world champion Leisel Jones of Australia was sixth while conserving energy for the evening semifinal. "I dont like going hard right in the morning if you really dont need to," she said. Amanda Beard, the 29-year-old American, advanced in 14th. "The 100 is not my best event so I get a little nervous," she said. "I just really wanted to get one more swim out of it. At nighttime, you always go a little bit faster." France had the top two qualifiers in the 100 backstroke. Camille Lacourt was first at 53.30 and Jeremy Stravius finished second at 53.34. With three-time world champion Aaron Peirsol retired, the United States is looking for its next great backstroker. David Plummer was third-quickest in 53.68, while teammate Nick Thoman advanced in 10th. Denmarks Lotte Friis advanced to the 1,500 free final with the quickest time of 16:00.47. Chinas Shao Yiwen was second at 16:01.72. Two-time world champion Kate Ziegler of the United States was third at 16:02.53. Her teammate, Chloe Sutton, was ninth and missed the final. "When I was young, it would be fast swims in-season all the time and things kind of change as you age," said Ziegler, now 23. "So I feel good, but I feel I still have room to improve a lot." wholesale jerseys . -- Canadas Aleksandra Wozniak missed on a match point as she lost a third-round, three-hour struggle to Venus Williams on Sunday at the Sony Ericsson Open. cheap jerseys from china . With one week left in the regular season, Cornish - voted The Toughest Player To Bring Down - is a leading candidate for the CFLs Most Outstanding Player award. He has rushed for 1,799 yards and could break Willie Burdens club record for rushing yards in a single season with a 98-yard performance against the B.When Bernard Hopkins (52-5-2, 32 KO) steps into the ring for the 61st time in his decorated professional career against Chad Dawson (30-1, 17 KO), it will be the same story line that has followed Hopkins in recent years. Hes the cagey veteran and ageless wonder, while his opponent is young, athletic, talented and in the case of Dawson, 17 years younger. Hopkins does believe Dawson is a talented fighter, but on the other hand, doesnt believe Dawson has any attributes that will surprise him. "Hes big enough to take more punishment," Hopkins said. "Hes also a southpaw. But whatever Chad Dawson brings to the table, I can do the same. Ive been there, done that. But also, I can do it better then he can." Hopkins has fought many future Hall of Famers in his career including Oscar De La Hoya, Felix Trinidad, Winky Wright and Joe Calzaghe. But he doesnt believe either of them were his toughest foe. When asked about the most challenging opponent in his 23 year career, Hopkins replied "the boxing system." Hopkins of course was an overlooked fighter for most of the 1990s. After knocking out Segundo Mercado to capture the IBF middleweight title in 1995, Hopkins made ten defenses before his rematch with Antwun Echols. The day after dispatching Echols in the 10th round, Felix Trinidad knocked out Fernando Vargas for the light middleweight title and was expected to go up to middleweight to fight William Joppy. Hopkins though wanted the big money fight against Trinidad and was quite outspoken in trying to make fight that happen. Ultimately though, a short middleweight tournament was made and after Hopkins beat Keith Holmes, Trinidad knocked out Joppy, and the biggest fight in Hopkins career was set. Hopkins systematically broke Trinidad down with ease before knocking him out in the 12th round in arguably the best performance of Hopkins career. Bernard was coming up on his 37th birthday at the time and many thought the impressive win was the best way for him to walk into the sunset. But Bernard had no intentions of retiring and added more victories since then, including his most recent win over Canadian Jean Pascal. "I believe it all really started in the Trinidad fight. After that everyone paid attention to me. They understood that when guys fought me, they had a problem."Even after all the money, numerous wins over top fighters and 20 straight title defenses as a middleweight champion, Hopkins says hes not ready to leave just yet. While most fighters in their 40s are in need of money or are shadows of their former self, Hopkins is the notable exception. "As long as I have the desire to win and not embarrass myself or the sport, then Ill keep fightting. Wholesale NFL Jerseys . . He (Dawson) is not going to be in the jungle retiring the lion. Im not ready to go yet. I still like the fundamentals of boxing, the intelligence, the hit and not get hit." Before Hopkins began his career as a professional boxer though, he spent much of his life involved in crime. Hopkins spent 56 months at the Graterford State Penitentiary in Pennsylvania before getting out determined to start a new life. Although he is proud of his boxing accomplishments, he attributes it to his days behind bars where he learned discipline and mental toughness. "I was thinking about staying alive in there. When I left, I just wanted to stay the hell out and never go back. That overrides all the titles and history. I believe thats in my spirit and my drive as a human being and that plays into boxing and who I am. My life behind boxing has been against the odds." The odds though are quite even with this fight against Dawson. Despite Hopkins age, his performance against Pascal reminded many that his body is not as old as his birth certificate indicates. Hopkins though already sees some weaknesses in Dawsons mentality, when "Bad" Chad enlisted the help of former Hopkins foe Ronald "Winky" Wright."Who hires ‘stinky Winky, a guy who I sent into retirement? Thats like getting a guy to teach you how to drive when he doesnt have a license." Dawson has also criticized Hopkins for his use of dirty tactics. "When he says Im a dirty fighter, it sounds like hes already complaining and making excuses and we havent thrown a punch yet." In recent years, Hopkins has faced criticism for being a boxer who fails to entertain. However in his last two fights with Pascal in Quebec, Hopkins traded with the fighter 17 years his junior and became the oldest fighter ever to win a major championship. "I have to be exciting and have to do what I did in Canada. Doing that is a big risk for me; I understand that. Im going to save the best for the last, and thats what people have seen in my last few fights." Regardless of what the result is with his fight with Dawson, Hopkins has already accomplished more then most top fighters put together. Turning his life around is an accomplishment of its own, but becoming one of the greatest fighters of all time is truly remarkable. Hopkins does think hell leave the sport eventually, but plans to go out in style. "When I leave, Im going to leave with fireworks and have the grand finale. All the last fights of my career will be exciting." "Enjoy it while Im here, because nothing lasts forever."
