DETROIT - Jim Leyland reached a milestone Friday night, and he knew just who deserves the credit. Dirk Nowitzki Jersey . Justin Verlander took a shutout into the eighth inning and the Tigers expanded their AL Central lead over Chicago with an 8-1 victory over the White Sox. The win was Leylands 500th with Detroit, making him the fifth Tigers manager to reach that level. "Give credit where it is due: Justin Verlander has 104 of those wins, and he gave us another great performance tonight," Leyland said. "So lets forget about Jim Leyland and talk about Justin Verlander." Verlander (21-5) improved to 19-2 since May 1, allowing one run on seven hits in 7 1-3 innings. He walked one and struck out six. "It was a hot, humid night and both pitchers were labouring, which makes it more impressive what he did tonight," Leyland said. "It was nice to see, because he picked the offence up, and then they picked him up. Thats how you have to win games in September." Verlander was pitching a two-hitter when the Tigers scored five runs in the fifth to take an 8-0 lead. "I didnt change my game plan when we were leading 3-0 early, but once it got to be 8-0, I started throwing first-pitch fastballs," he said. "I figured if they were hacking, I could get some quick outs. It hurt me a little in the eighth, but you certainly cant complain about a game like this." Detroit isnt known for defence, but Verlander got several exceptional plays, including a diving catch by second baseman Ramon Santiago and a long running grab by gimpy right fielder Magglio Ordonez. "That looked like Magglio from at least 10 years ago, the way he ran that down," Verlander said. "As for Santi, I dont know what you can say about that play, other than it probably saved me at least a run." John Danks (6-10) struggled badly for Chicago, allowing eight runs on nine hits and two walks in 4 2-3 innings. The White Sox had won five of six, but fell 6 1/2 games behind the first-place Tigers with two games left in the series. "Danks wasnt around the plate, and he was facing a pretty good hitting club that is swinging the bats well," White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said. The White Sox also trail second-place Cleveland by a game. "Were running out of games," Danks said. "We have to at least win out against the Tigers and were still going to need some help." After Verlander needed just six pitches in the top of the first, Detroit staked him to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the inning. Austin Jackson led off with a single, took second on Ordonezs groundout and scored on Delmon Youngs triple. Young came home on Cabreras RBI single, and Cabrera then stunned the sold-out crowd of 42,352 by stealing second base. That put him in position to score on Alex Avilas single. "That was all Miggys doing -- dont give me any credit for that one," Leyland said. "He saw that Danks wasnt paying attention and he got the base. Thats a huge play, because it gets us a run." Against the overwhelming favourite to win the American League Cy Young award, Guillen knew the game was almost over after one inning. "When it is 3-0 in the first inning against that guy, youve got a pretty rough slope to climb," he said. Guillen was right, as the score remained 3-0 until the bottom of the fifth, with the White Sox only putting one runner in scoring position. Brandon Inge led off Detroits fifth with a single, and scored on Jacksons ninth homer of the season. A single and two walks loaded the bases with two outs, and Guillen pulled Danks in favour of Josh Kinney. The move didnt pay off, as Jhonny Peralta lined a bases-clearing double to give the Tigers their eight-run lead. Tyler Flowers broke up Verlanders shutout with a 425-foot homer on the first pitch of the eighth, and Chicago loaded the bases with one out before Joaquin Benoit came out of the bullpen. Paul Konerko flew out to left, and A.J. Pierzynski lined out to Cabrera at first. NOTES: Leyland joined Sparky Anderson (1,331), Hughie Jennings (1,131), Bucky Harris (516) and Steve ONeill (509) as 500-game winners with Detroit. "Thats something you focus on more with your family, but it is something Im proud of -- being only the fifth person to do that in over 100 years of baseball in Detroit," Leyland said. ... Tigers reliever Alberto Alburquerque is expected to throw an inning for Triple-A Toledo on Saturday before rejoining Detroit. Alburquerque has been sidelined with a concussion since being hit with a liner in batting practice on August 12. ... Chicagos Eduardo Escobar made his major-league debut, replacing Alexei Ramirez at shortstop in the seventh inning. Shane Lindsay, the first Australian to play for the White Sox, started his career by pitching the eighth. ... Verlander has thrown at least six innings and 100 pitches in all 30 starts this season. ... The teams play again Saturday afternoon, with Detroits Brad Penny (9-10) against Chicagos Gavin Floyd (12-10). wholesale nfl jerseys . The Calgary Stampeders running back received the West Division nomination for the CFLs top individual award Thursday in voting by the Football Reporters of Canada and leagues eight head coaches. DeMar DeRozan Jersey . Still going strong, the great No. 32 is back where he belongs. "Here I am," he said. The Hall of Fame running back, who was estranged for years from the NFL team where he starred in the 1950s and 60s -- after his previous role was eliminated by former president Mike Holmgren -- was welcomed back to the Browns on Wednesday by new owner Jimmy Haslam. http://www.thekatespadeoutletshop.com/ . -- Canada was minutes away from advancing at the CONCACAF Gold Cup, until a last-gasp equalizer from Panama dashed its hopes. Wholesale Jerseys Supply . David Perron scored a goal and added an assist on Saturday as the Edmonton Oilers came away with a 5-2 exhibition victory over the Vancouver Canucks. Beats By Dre Cyber Monday Sale . "I want to sincerely thank Pierre Groulx for his contribution to the Canadiens organization over the past four years," said Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin in a statement. One of the leagues top teams, the Los Angeles Kings have a lot of familiar names that wont come as bargains because of their recent success, but theres nothing wrong with tried and true performers. Top Picks: Since 2007-2008, C Anze Kopitar has scored 415 points, ranking 16th in the league, and hes plus-51 over the last three seasons, ranking 17th, so hes a safe mid-range option as a No. 1 centre. One concern: last season, Kopitar generated a career-low 2.09 shots on goal per game, down from 3.11 just two seasons before, so that trend needs to reverse course if hes going to be pushing a point per game on a regular basis, but he remains a high-end option until proven otherwise. Riding alongside Kopitar, LW Dustin Brown has been a productive player in his own right, with 149 goals since 2007-2008 ranking 26th. What sets Brown apart, however is his propensity for hitting and his place near the top of the league in that category, year after year, makes him a low-end No. 1 or high-end No. 2 fantasy left winger. On the other wide, RW Justin Williams has moved beyond the injury problems that plagued him earlier in his career, playing every game in the last two seasons. Both Williams and Brown are among 17 players to have scored at least 140 points while posting a plus-35 rating over the last three seasons. That consistency makes Williams a fine No. 2 option on right wing. Also since 2007-2008, RW Jeff Carter has scored 191 goals, ranking sixth. His assist totals are relatively low (lowest of the Top 31 goal-scorers in that time), which limits his upside somewhat, but as a No. 2 option, Carter has the upside to challenge for a 40-goal season. Defencemen Drew Doughty and Slava Voynov are both high-quality options. Doughty has never been as productive as he was in his second season, when he scored 59 points and was plus-20, and yet he still ranks eighth among defencemen with 157 points over the last four seasons. Voynov has 45 points in 102 NHL games through his first two seasons, but came to the forefront with 13 points in 18 playoff gamees last season. Celine Cyber Monday Deals . Hes still more potential than proven, but his offensive game makes him a legit No. 2 option on defence. Coming off back surgery, G Jonathan Quick had the worst regular season of his career, posting a lowly .902 save percentage (after a .929 mark the year before), but he was once against stellar in the playoffs (.934 save percentage in 18 games), giving some hope that, when healthy, hell return to being an elite goaltender. Firmly entrenched as the starting goaltender for a Cup contender, Quick is an easy pick as a top five, maybe top three, goaltender. Value Plays: C Mike Richards hasnt scored in Los Angeles like he did in Philadelphia, and the 16:21 per game he played last season was his lowest since his rookie year, but hes a safe, reliable option as a No. 3 fantasy centre. Sleepers/Breakthrough: A lot of the prominent spots in the Kings lineup are locked up by veterans, so any breakthroughs may have to come with opportunities created by injuries. However, RW Matt Frattin, acquired from Toronto in the Jonathan Bernier deal, has 15 goals and 28 points in 82 NHL games, along with 23 goals and 35 points in 44 AHL games, so he has some offensive upside, maybe enough to be a 20-goal scorer, if he gets a chance in a top-six role at some point. D Jake Muzzin gets third pair minutes for the Kings, but was very effective last season, as one of eight defencemen to have at least 15 points and a plus-15 rating. Rookies: After a procuctive junior career, LW Tyler Toffoli made a smooth transition to the pros last season, scoring 28 goals and 51 points in the AHL, adding 11 points in 22 (regular season and playoff) games, giving the Kings a taste of what he might be able to do. If he gets regular playing time in a top-six role, Toffoli could score 20 goals and warrant a look in deeper, or most definitely keeper, leagues.
