Today, with his smart suits and downturned moustache, Stanley Roger Smith looks more like a captain of American industry than a world-beating sportsman. He looks even less like a men's style icon.
Yet, indirectly at least, Smith has informed the wardrobes of myriad subcultures; from LA skaters to the Japanese avant garde, from sports casuals to indie kids, as well as legions of sporting greats. For the 1970s tennis star's name has appeared on the best-selling sports shoe of all time since Adidas Superstar Mujer 1971. The Adidas Stan Smith has sold a not inconsiderable 40 million pairs over the years (you hear that, Converse All Stars?) and, today, after two years on the sidelines, Smith's shoes are stepping back into the limelight.
Thanks to tennis's air of gentility and elegance - the crisp whites, the preppy polo shirts Nike Iternationalist Damen - the sport has always had an inherent sense of style, which is nowhere more visible than in the footwear worn by its participants. Whether squeaking merrily on the asphalt courts of WASPish country clubs or skidding across the scorched summer turf of Wimbledon, tennis shoes have long been some of the most appealing items of sports kit. And none have endured better that Adidasâs original tennis shoe.
Like Chuck Taylor, the 1920s baseball star who lent his moniker to Converseâs All Stars, and tennis star Rene Lacoste, Adidas Kamanda Mujer who co-founded La Chemise Lacoste in 1933 to mass-produce the polo shirt that he had worn on the way to several Grand Slam titles (and which went on to become a design titan), Stan Smith was a sporting zenith in his own right before he became synonymous with an item of apparel. From the dusty courts of Pasadena, Nike Air Force 1 Dámské California, to the sport's promised land of the All England Club in London SW19, Smithâs ascent through the ranks of tennis stardom was swift.
Throughout his rise, he wore a tennis shoe called the Adidas Robert Haillet, named after the renowned French tennis player of the '50s and '60s, who was enlisted by the sportswear Adidas Eqt Support Adv Dames firm in 1965 to lend their footwear some extra gravitas. Little did Smith know that heâd one day take over Hailletâs mantle.
After blazing through the US Open (which he won in 1971), Smith then set his Nike Air Max 90 Mujer sights on Wimbledon and, in 1972, walked away from his battle with Franceâs Ilie Nastase victorious. With Smith now number one in the world rankings, Adidas came calling, and the shoe (Haillet never progressed beyond the semi-final of a Slam event) was swiftly renamed after the American; with his name emblazoned Adidas Stan Smith Mujer on the sides and a rendering of his face on the tongue.
It wasnât purely a case of hero worship on the part of Adidas. The German sports brand, founded in 1948 by Adolf Dassler, had hitherto been relatively unknown beyond Europe: forming a harmonious sartorial marriage with Americaâs sporting golden boy helped the Asics Gel Lyte 3 Femme label break into the USA.

Adidas AG aims to increase its sales by 40 million pairs of sneakers annually, to more than a half-billion by 2020, largely by appealing to fashion-conscious teens and urban hipsters. At the heart of that effort: a decades-old shoe Nike Air Max Thea Womens named after a retired tennis player who lives in South Carolina and hasnât won a major singles tournament since 1980.
The shoe is the Stan Smith, a white-leather number with pale green accents introduced in 1971, the year before Stan Smith (the player, now 70) earned his second and last Grand Slam singles title. Thanks to a well-orchestrated promotional Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 33 Mujer blitz, this unlikely hero has made one of the greatest comebacks in marketing history, from a declining brand popular with suburban dads Nike Air Max 2016 Dames into a must-have for the -fashion-savvy.
As they rev up an effort to catch Nike Inc., Adidas executives are seeking to replicate parts of the campaign to stoke interest in other shoes. âWe wanted to position it anew with fashion designers and trendsetters,â says Arthur Hoeld, who heads Adidasâs brand strategy and business development. âThis is part Adidas NMD Mujer of the concept â to push boundaries, to experiment.â
As Adidas was planning the Stan Smith revival about five years ago, the shoe was still selling, though it was showing up more often at discount stores. The feeling around the company was that the model had lost its mojo, but Hoeld and a handful of other executives saw its potential, their confidence bolstered by reports that Phoebe Philo, creative director of the Céline fashion house, had been spotted sporting Stan Smiths at her Adidas Gazelle Damen shows.
The first step was counter--intuitive: Adidas pulled the shoe from the market in 2012, leaving customers with the impression the move was permanent. By mid-2013, Stan Smiths were almost impossible to find, prompting angry letters from fans â and spurring Smith and some on Hoeldâs team to question the wisdom of the plan.
Late that year, Adidas began Asics Gel Quantum 360 Mujer shipping a new version to dozens of celebrities it had worked with, including singer AUS$AP Rocky, designer Alexander Wang, and talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres. The freebies included a personalised touch intended to get the stars to wear them: A drawing of Smith on the tongue was replaced by an image of each recipient. Adidas struck gold in November 2013, when French Vogue featured model Gisele Bündchen sporting nothing but a pair of white socks â and Stan Smiths.
Adidas, which has Adidas ZX Flux Femme Fleur made the sneakers for more than 50 years, now sells Stan Smiths in black, in pink, in blue, in men's, in women's, in kids' and infant sizes. There are knit Stans, suede Stans and Stans that are dipped in gold. And if you can't find a pair to your liking, you can go online and customize your own. You'll see them on feet from New York to Tokyo. In its 2014 Nike Cortez Donna annual report, Adidas revealed that the Stan Smiths were the company's best-selling shoes of all time, with more than 40 million pairs sold. Buoyed by the Stan Smiths, sales of Adidas Classics in the U.S. are up 60 percent for the first six months of 2016.

Adidas is following up its star-studded spot for its Originals line, which challenges what it means to be a superstar, with a short film that presents the next wave of creators to the world.
The Nike Air Huarache Mujer creative, rolling out today, is part of a year-long global campaign that kicked off in January to celebrate the 45th anniversary of the Superstar shoe -- the Originals' most iconic and one of its best-selling Nike Air Zoom Mariah Flyknit Dámsk&A...lde;© products.
The latest effort for fall and winter speaks to the brand's younger target audience more closely than the spring and summer work, said Alegra O'Hare, global senior director-brand communications for Adidas Originals.
"It really takes it to another level," said Ms. O'Hare. "We're giving people the opportunity to really create conversations around what it means to be a superstar. It sends a very powerful message [to the] younger generation. It's just a great moment to be yourself and express yourself."
Converse, another lifestyle footwear brand, pushed a similar message to consumers in its "Made By You" campaign, which broke in March. It highlighted customers' creative spirits to celebrate the 98-year-old Chuck Taylor All Star line.
Artist Pharrell Williams, who starred in Adidas' previous Superstar push, returns in Adidas Superstar Damen the new spot. He worked with agency Johannes Leonardo to highlight five new emerging artists from the brand's core global markets including American hip-hop artists Pusha T, Russian actor and director Grigoriy Dobrygin, Nike Air Max 2016 Dámské Japanese jewelry designer Yoon, Chinese visual artist VJ Mian, and Mexican illustrator Smith. The "Pay It Forward" approach passes the torch of superstardom to these creators who, in turn, will each recognize five more inspiring artists through social media, and so on and so forth, using the hashtag "#OriginalSuperstar."
"We started the campaign with people that the whole world acknowledges as the ultimate superstars because we needed qualified people to say that a superstar is not what they think it is," said Ferdinando Verderi, creative director at Johannes Leonardo, the agency behind the effort. "Now we want to Adidas ZX Flux Damen empower the next generation and show the world there's a whole new generation of creators."
The 60-second black-and-white launch spot was directed by Patrick Clair, best known for the title sequences of HBO's Nike Air Max 90 Womens "True Detective," AMC's "Halt and Catch Fire" and Marvel's "Daredevil." Photographer Andreas Laszlo Konrath, an up-and-comer, also worked on the project.
The first stretch of the Originals push, which broke earlier this year, helped the lifestyle brand maintain its stronghold after experiencing a "double-digit" bump in sales last year. In the first quarter of 2015, sales for the Originals line shot up by 29%, while Adidas overall sales were up nearly 19%, according to the company's earnings.
"The great thing is that [the growth] is from Superstar... It's just a worldwide trend," said Ms. O'Hare. "It's a very positive year Adidas Stan Smith Damen and we're just really excited about this campaign."
New Originals product launches also contributed to the sales boost. During the quarter, Adidas released the Yeezy Boost shoe in collaboration with artist Kanye Asics Gel Lyte 5 Womens West, the Tubular sneaker line, a new version of the ZX Flux, and the Superstar Supercolor pack in partnership with Mr. Williams, which introduced the shoe in 50 new shades.
The Superstar push continues running throughout the year, along with other, smaller campaigns for the Originals line.
Adidas Group spent nearly $342 million on domestic advertising in 2014, down 3% from the previous year, according to the Ad Age DataCenter.

Itâs always exciting to see the mass of different creative people come together and exchange new ideas, trends and looks. Not all PR clichés are true. The ZF FLUX event was one of my personal highlights â and I know it was for many other sneaker fans too. It was a great evening with perfect tunes and great people. What I want to tell you by saying this? Working at adidas, for me, itâs not only working with heritage products. Itâs working on modern, desirable products, which have a heritage story to tell. When working on topics like the ZX FLUX, Adidas ZX Flux Mujer itâs not about repeating history, itâs about making new history. Maybe itâs you in 25 years who can say, âI was part of adidas, when the ZX FLUX was first releasedâ.

Phil Knight commissions his swoosh-stripe Mount Rushmore somewhere in the wilds of the Pacific Northwest, the Air Max 95 will be one of the shoes that will be carved into the Precambrian granite outcropping. The Air Max 95 isn't the best Nike runner ever made, it's arguably (sorry Air Jordan junkies) the best Nike shoe ever made, an Nike Roshe Run Mujer object burrowed deeply into the popular culture. Collectors flocked to it, kickstarting what would become a $75 billion global industry fueled by hype beasts, Nike Air Max 97 Mujer sneakerheads, and enough aspirational consumers to fill the Mariana Trench several times over. Since it's 1995 debut, the Air Max 95 has remained a perennial bestseller. Nike churns out several new versions every year. The number of colorways is staggering: over 150 and counting. Such ubiquity has done nothing to diminish the shoe's cachet. It continues to be been worn by artists, actors, pop stars, criminals and, yes, even actual athletes.
Nagomo Oji knew he was stepping into history when he laced up a pair of Air Max 95s last month in Saitama City, Japan, a commuter sprawl 10 miles north of central Tokyo. What made Oji's shoes so special was their pedigree. Anybody can walk Nike Air Max 95 Womens into Foot Locker and buy a pair of Air Maxes for 160 bucks. Oji's shoes were something quite different. To use the sneakerhead vernacular, they were "DS" (dead Asics Gel Lyte 5 Womens stock), a discontinued model that's new, unworn, and unboxed. Even better, they were "OG. Not "original gangster," just "original." In other words, these vintage kicks were highly collectable, a pristine example of the very first Air Maxes that dropped two decades ago.
But something insidious has been happening to those shoes, and every other pair like them, over the years. They've been crumbling away to nothing as they sit tucked in boxes or hidden in closets. The materials used to make them degrade over time, causing the shoes to fall apart, rendering them worthless.
Much had happened since Oji purchased these Nike runners. He no longer defined himself by the shoes he Adidas ZX Flux Womens wore. Vanity had been undermined by adulthood and responsibilities. He was a grown man now, a father of 2-year-old twins. As he appraised his newly shod feet, a Nike Air Vapormax Womens smile creased his lips. It might not be possible to relive the past, he thought. But this was the closest thing to it.
As soon as he planted his feet, Oji sensed something was terribly wrong. The midsoles flattened, and his footing became strangely unstable. He didn't realize it at the time, but the polyurethane (PU), that squishy, shock-absorbing material sandwiched between the upper and the outer sole, was more than ten years past its projected lifespan.
After just one step, the hardened PU foam fractured and collapsed, like arid soil crumbling beneath the boots of a Dust Bowl Okie. Oji looked down in disbelief. With the inner soles completely detached from the uppers, his feet were actually touching the ground. His beloved Nike Air Max 270 Mujer Air Maxes had just morphed into Fred Flintstone shoes.
This was absurdly counterintuitive. Scientists and Nike Air Max 90 Damen conservationists have warned that plastics would languish in landfills for 500 years. And yet Oji's polyurethane midsoles had been reduced to a sticky trail of biodegraded fragments.
In the wake of this disaster, Oji did what any other grieving Millennial would do: He snapped some photos of this "Cool Grey/Neon" mess and uploaded them to Twitter. "Sad news," he tweeted. "After wearing AIR MAX 95s for the first time in 20 years, they broke apart after one step, before I could get out the front door."

The Nike Air Max 1 is arguably the most iconic sneaker of all time. The first colorway uses blue for the base of the upper, before layering the red satin on top for a contrasting look. Next, the second pair begins with a Mint Green foundation paired with bright blue satin overlays. Adidas NMD Damen Finally, the third rendition of the Nike Air Max 1 âSatinâ will come in all-black atop a white midsole.
Almost everything about the Nike Air Max 1 âSatinâ is true to the original silhouette. However, Nike has opted to replace the typical Nike Air branding on the Adidas Adilette Slides Femme heels for an older logo from the 70âs. The Swoosh Pinwheel is a fan favorite among Nike heads, so donât expect these to sit long.
The latest version of the Nike Air Max 1 is set to arrive in stores soon. The three âSatinâ colorways will launch from both Nike SNKRS and select Nike Air Vapormax Femme retailers for around $160.
This Saturday is Air Max Day and Nike have released a fresh set of the trainers to celebrate. Hatfield has added the Nike Air Max 90 Ultra Superfly T to the legendary line, updating his original masterpiece. Of the new design he says, âeverything I do is colored by my experiences. When I draw, itâs a culmination of things that Iâve seen and done to that point. When I was designing this shoe, I pulled inspiration from the United States and France. Each country has had considerable influence on my career, so thatâs where you Asics Gel Lyte 5 Mujer get the reds, whites and the bluesâ.
Hiroshi Fujiwara, acclaimed streetwear designer, contributes the Nike Air Max LD-Zero H that sees a combination of the âNike Boston upper with the Air Max 2014 platformâ.
